Ellen Watts September 17, 2018. 2 Abstract The ability of celebrities to become influential political actors is evident (Marsh et al., 2010; Street 2004; 2012, West and Orman, 2003; Wheeler, 2013); the process enabling this is not. While Driessens’ (2013) concept of celebrity capital provides a starting point, it remains unclear how celebrity capital is exchanged for political capital. Returning to Street’s (2004) argument that celebrities claim to speak for others provides an opportunity to address this. In this thesis I argue successful exchange is contingent on acceptance of such claims, and contribute an original model for understanding this process. I explore the implicit interconnections between Saward’s (2010) theory of representative claims, and Bourdieu’s (1991) work on political capital and the political field. On this basis, I argue celebrity capital has greater explanatory power in political contexts when fused with Saward’s theory of representative claims. Three qualitative case studies provide demonstrations of this process at work. Contributing to work on how celebrities are evaluated within political and cultural hierarchies (Inthorn and Street, 2011; Marshall, 2014; Mendick et al., 2018; Ribke, 2015; Skeggs and Wood, 2011), I ask which key factors influence this process. -

He was a founding member of the BBC News Website, leading international coverage as World Editor (1997‐2001). As Head of Product Development for BBC News he helped introduce innovations such as blogs, podcasting and on‐demand video. Most recently he led digital teams, developing websites, mobile and interactive TV applications for News, Sport, Weather and Local. Nic is currently a Visiting Fellow at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism where he has published two recent reports on social media and mainstream media. He is a trainer, writer and consultant on digital media at the interface between technology and journalism. METHODOLOGY AND ACKNOWLEDGMENTS: This study was completed in June and July 2010 and aims to explore product management best practice in the digital media industry. It aims to raise the profile and understanding of the importance of the role of the product manager in the creation of successful digital products through interviews and case studies. -

The winners of the SAUSIES awards, sponsored by Porky Whites - the great tasting British sausage brand since 1935 - have been announced today (Thursday 25 October 2018) and reveal which celebrities the nation think are the epitome of great taste and those who leave a bad taste in their mouths. Hundreds of online votes* were cast to determine the celebrity winners in thirteen hotly contested categories from TV and Sport to Radio and Politics. Voters were asked to consider celebrities’ looks, style, personality and behaviour. And the winners are... Tastiest TV duo – ITV’s This Morning Phillip Schofield & Holly Willoughby Phil and Holly were voted the Tastiest TV duo with nearly half of all votes cast. They came out on top ahead of Strictly’s Tess and Claudia and Bake Off’s Sandi and Noel. “Phil and Holly have such great chemistry and go together like sausages and mash” said one voter. Tastiest male celebrity – Tom Hardy Tom Hardy, the former model and now actor and film producer scooped the tastiest male award. “He’s not only extremely good looking he’s an amazing actor and an animal lover too” said another voter. Tastiest female celebrity – ITV’s Holly Willoughby Holly picked up her second award, this time in the tastiest female celebrity category. -

Panorama: The Secret Letters of Pope John Paul II TX: 15/02/2016 Dur: 29'00" Broadcaster: BBC 1 Production Company: Blakeway This film – for the BBC, Arte and PBS - made headlines in newspapers around the world. It was the result of a 4-year investigation by journalist Edward Stourton. He discovered hundreds of letters and photographs that revealed an intense emotional relationship between Pope John Paul 11 and a married woman, Polish born American philosopher, Anna Teresa Tymieniecka, which spanned 30 years (from his time as a Cardinal until his death as Pope). The letters had been acquired for a six figure sum by the Polish National Library, and were then hidden away while the process of securing sainthood for John Paul was in progress. The revelations turned what might have been a history programme into a current affairs investigation. It would seem there was a cover-up. Following a tip-off that the letters existed, it took two years to track them down and another year to gain access to them. It was clear Anna Teresa had fallen in love with John Paul and had declared that love. There is no evidence that the relationship was physical, but the prudent course would have been to end it. John Paul was determined it should continue, and even tried to justify it in religious terms. The letters had been sold to the Polish Library by Anna Teresa after the death of her husband, and Stourton assumed that the archive consisted simply of John Paul’s letters to her. -
