Regio- nal cooperation among countries with similar problems and potentials such as the Nordic countries is not only of value in itself, but can also provide a starting Point for aa true "internationalization" of educational research and development. In order to promote such cooperation, Unesco recently established an international network for information in science and technology education.Each of Unesci's Member Stites was invited to nominate a participing institution. The purpose of the network is to encourage cooperation and exchange of information both on a world-wide scale.and also among regional or sub-regional groups of countries with si- milar conditionm and concerns, such as the Nordic countries. The Nordic Conference was organized in the framework of this network, with financial and technical support from Unesco. The Royal Danish School of Educational Studies, which is the Danish member of the network, undertook the organization of the Conference. In the past many Nordic science and technology educa- tors have considered their problems from a purely national point of view and have not taken full advantage of the pos- sibilities offered by a more extensive international coope- ration. Similarly the cooperation in each Nordic country between science and technology educators within different fields or at different levels has frequently been unsatis- factory. Therefore it was the aim of the Nordic Conference not only to bring science educators from all parts of the Nordic region together, but also to let teachers from dif- ferent fields and different levels work together on their problems which are often common or strongly related. The Nordic region is in no way isolated from the rest of the world. It is strongly dependent on what goes on in both developing and industrialized countries. Therefore three eminent science educators from other parts of the world: India, the United States, and Yugoslavia were in- vited to the meeting. Their particiristion was supported by the Nordic Cultural Fund, and it was of immense impor- tance for.the Conference. So was also the participation of Unesco staff members. The Nordic participants, around 40 science and tech- nology educators from Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark did a remarkable lob. They did not only present a large number of valuable results and ideas, but they did that in a very clear and concise Way which was essential for the outcome of the Conference. In the small group discussions they worked hard and obtained excellent results. Organizing a conference may be hard and unpleasant work. In this case it became'a pleasure thanks to the sponsors, especially Unesco, and to the outstanding spi- rit and brilliant work done by the participants. There- /ore, one may hope that the Conference also will work as a starting point for future Nordic cooperation in the field of science and technology education. Erik W. McAlpine University of Abertay Dundee Abstract The ZX Spectrum launched in the UK in April 1982, and almost single- handedly kick-started the British computer games industry. Launched to compete with technologically-superior rivals from Acorn and Commodore, the Spectrum had price and popularity on its side and became a runaway success. One area, however, where the Spectrum betrayed its price-point was its sound hardware, providing just a single channel of 1-bit sound playback, and the first-generation of Spectrum titles did little to challenge the machine’s hardware. Programmers soon realised, however, that with clever machine coding, the Spectrum’s speaker could be encouraged to do more than it was ever designed to. This creativity, borne from constraint, represents a very real example of technology, or rather limited technology, as a driver for creativity, and, since the solutions were not without cost, they imparted a characteristic sound that, in turn, came to define the aesthetic of ZX Spectrum music. At the time, there was little interest in the formal study of either the technologies that support computer games or the social and cultural phenomena that surround them. This retrospective study aims to address that by deconstructing and analysing a key turning point in the musical life of the ZX Spectrum.

Abstract In recent years, the importance of the object-oriented paradigm has changed signifi- cantly. Initially it was mainly used in software engineering, but it is now being used more and more in education. This thesis applies methods of educational assessment and statistics to object-oriented programming and in doing so provides a broad overview of concepts, teaching methods, and the current state of research in this field of computer science. Recently, there have been various trends in introductory courses for object-oriented programming including objects-first and objects-later. Using current pedagogical concepts such as cognitive load theory, conceptual change, and self-directed learning in the context of this work, a teaching approach that dispenses almost entirely of instruction by teachers was developed. These minimally invasive programming courses (MIPC) were carried out in several passes in preliminary courses in the Department of Computer Science at the TU München. The students were confronted with a small programming task just before the first lecture.

The Grundy NewBrain is 30 Tony Smith Archaeologic The NewBrain was launched 30 years ago this month, but its arrival, in July 1982, was a long time coming. The genesis of the computer that might have been the BBC Micro - that might, even, have been Sinclair's first home computer - goes back more than four years to 1978. The company that became known as Sinclair Radionics was founded by Clive - now Sir Clive - Sinclair in 1961. But by the mid-1970s it was to all intents and purposed owned by the British government. Overseeing Radionics' operation was the National Enterprise Board (NEB), an organisation established by the Labour administration in 1975 to promote the nationalisation of key industries, and it took partial control of Radionics in 1976.
