ABSTRACT It is a well-known fact of history that ever since the assassination of capital Uthman in 656 A.D. the Political importance of Central Arabia, the cradle of Islam , including its two holiest cities Mecca and Medina, paled into in insignificance. The fourth Rashidi Calif 'Ali bin Abi Talib had already left Medina and made Kufa in Iraq his new capital not only because it was the main base of his power, but also because the weight of the far-flung expanding Islamic Empire had shifted its centre of gravity to the north. From that time onwards even Mecca and Medina came into the news only once annually on the occasion of the Haj. It was for similar reasons that the 'Umayyads 661-750 A.D. ruled form Damascus in Syria, while the Abbasids (750- 1258 A.D ) made Baghdad in Iraq their capital. However , after a long gap of inertia, Central Arabia again came into the limelight of the Muslim world with the rise of the Wahhabi movement launched jointly by the religious reformer Muhammad ibn Abd al Wahhab and his ally Muhammad bin saud, a chieftain of the town of Dar'iyah situated between *Uyayana and Riyadh in the fertile Wadi Hanifa. There can be no denying the fact that the early rulers of the Saudi family succeeded in bringing about political stability in strife-torn Central Arabia by fusing together the numerous war-like Bedouin tribes and the settled communities into a political entity under the banner of standard, Unitarian Islam as revived and preached by Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab. -

Digital religion encompasses a myriad of connections and the goal of the conference is to approach the subject from multiple perspec- tives.’ As can be seen from the conference proceedings, we did not achieve what we aimed for. The theme was too vast. We knew as much; a new field is always difficult to handle. Despite this, we still hope that the participants got some- thing out of the conference, and we also hope that the readers of the proceed- ings will benefit from them. I wish to finish this editorial note by acknowledging my colleague Björn Dahla. For many years we organised the Donner symposia and edited the conference proceedings together. After disembarking from the cramped and unsanitary quarters of the steamship, they wearily endured the endless lines and official inspections of the Ellis Island immigrant processing sta- tions. With the successful end of the first phase of their "journey of tears," they began the next phase of social and cultural adaptation within the more comfortable boundaries of Little Italy. New national and social class identi- ties overlapped with familiar identities of region, village, and kin. -

Special attention has been given to exploring phenomenon of cultural pluralism in the media, in particular print media, and highlighting governmental initiatives aimed at developing pluralistic media landscape in Russia. В статье рассматривается роль культурного плюрализма в современном российском обществе, освещаются основные труд- ности, с которыми сталкивается общество при попытке реа- лизовать идею плюралистического медиаландшафта в условиях мультиэтнической и мультикультурной реальности, а также определяются перспективы развития культурного плюрализма в современной России. Особенное внимание в статье уделяется 325 изучению особенностей культурного плюрализма в российских медиа, в частности в печатных СМИ. Рассматриваются за- конопроекты и государственные инициативы, направленные на обеспечение культурного многообразия в сфере массовой инфор- мации. Cultural pluralism in the media is defined as a concept referring to a fair and diverse representation of various cultural, ethnic, linguistic, religious, gender groups, and expression of their values, standpoints and opinions through the media (Valcke, Picard, et al, 2010). -

Beyond the Rhetoric of Assimilation and Cultural Pluralism: Addressing the Tension of Separatism and Conflict in an Immigration- Driven Multiracial Society Bill Ong Hingt Immigration is quickly changing the racial demographics of the United States. In so doing, it is creating both tensions and opportunities. The author responds to those who advocate restricted immigration as the solution to racialproblems. He refutes the underlying assumptions of such Euro-immigrationists: that the United States has a solely white, Christian, and European heritage, and that other immigrantshave failed to accultur- ate. Furthermore, culturalpluralism in a multiracialsociety has several benefits, including its connection to constitutionalprinciples and its advan- tages in both the global and the increasinglydiverse domestic economy. In turn, the author takes cultural pluralists to task for not grappling suffi- ciently with interethnic conflict and separatism. While interethnicconflict and separatistsentiment are exacerbated by society's exclusion ofpeople of color, they are problems that cannot be ignored. The author articulatesa new approach to cultural pluralism in a broader definition of America. This new approach would respect diverse views and cultures, including the right of separatists within communities of color. It would also require adherence to a common core of values, including respect for the laws, for the democraticpolitical and economic system, and for equal opportunity. (signature) ......................................................................................... 1 ABSTRACT This research studies the theology of those Wahhabis who have now named themselves Salafis. For the purpose of the study, they are referred to as the ‘Wahhabis-self-named- Salafis’ (WSNS). The thesis starts with the observation that the WSNS are usually studied from a political perspective, much less frequently a theological one. Recent research has identified that the theological background of all the different factions of the WSNS is one and the same. This is true for the WSNS who advocate a peaceful way to achieve their goals, as well as those who do not. This thesis aims to explore some of the theological issues that unify these factions. This research demonstrates that, because the WSNS are opposed to the very concept of interpretation of the Qur’an and the hadith, especially when these texts deal with important theological issues such as the Attributes of God, they have developed a vision of Islamic history which is entirely different from the one which had traditionally been accepted by most Muslim scholars and Western academics. -

Focusing on selected works by James Fenimore Cooper, Margaret Fuller, Francis Parkman, and Herman Melville, I use historicist methods to reveal how these authors drew upon and contributed to a strong and widespread, though ultimately unsuccessful, resistance to the discourse of Manifest Destiny that now identifies the age. For all their important differences, each of the frontier writings I examine reflects the presence of a culturally-pervasive anxiety over issues such as environmental depletion, slavery, Indian removal, and expansion‟s impact on the character of a nation ostensibly founded on republican, anti-imperialist principles. -

In the article there are compared the concepts of “multicultural education” in the USA and “polycultural education” in Russian Federation. MALIK SUMMARY I divide my paper entitled “Democracy and Religious Communities: the Riddle of Pluralism” into two parts: “Democracy and Religion: The Problem” and “Democ- racy and Political Islam: Pluralism under Siege.” A number of themes are treated and several arguments are presented. At one level the paper is an investigation of different manifestations of pluralism and their implications for democracy. In the era of glo- balization the urgent need to address problems arising from differing types of plural- ism is heightened. Many forms of pluralism do not imply that values are relative. They only mean that there are different paces of development towards the acceptance of, or an accommodation with, the principles and tenets of democracy. The slowness of particular cultures necessitates practical measures in the interim to safeguard vul- nerable groups – usually minority communities – and to try to speed up the reception of democracy in hitherto hostile settings. Often the manner of presenting democracy to an unfamiliar culture is crucial in avoiding injustice. For example, exporting de- mocracy to an Islamic, or predominantly Islamic, milieu requires that minority rights be stressed over majority rule. This, coupled with the principle of subsidiarity, helps to neutralize the threat of the heresy of “numerical democracy” which is nothing more than the tyranny of the majority. I begin in Part One by investigating the latent tension between democracy and religion in relation to the question of the nature of truth.
