Novalis's Magical Idealism
Symphilosophie International Journal of Philosophical Romanticism Novalis’s Magical Idealism A Threefold Philosophy of the Imagination, Love and Medicine Laure Cahen-Maurel* ABSTRACT This article argues that Novalis’s philosophy of magical idealism essentially consists of three central elements: a theory of the creative or productive imagination, a conception of love, and a doctrine of transcendental medicine. In this regard, it synthesizes two adjacent, but divergent contemporary philosophical sources – J. G. Fichte’s idealism and Friedrich Schiller’s classicism – into a new and original philosophy. It demonstrates that Novalis’s views on both magic and idealism, not only prove to be perfectly rational and comprehensible, but even more philosophically coherent and innovative than have been recognised up to now. Fichte, Schiller RÉSUMÉ Cet article défend l’idée selon laquelle trois éléments centraux composent ce que Novalis nomme « idéalisme magique » pour désigner sa philosophie propre : la conception d’une imagination créatrice ou productrice, une doctrine de l’amour et une théorie de la médecine transcendantale. L’idéalisme magique est en cela la synthèse en une philosophie nouvelle et originale de deux sources philosophiques contemporaines, à la fois adjacentes et divergentes : l’idéalisme de J. G. Fichte et le classicisme de Friedrich Schiller. L’article montre que les vues de Novalis tant sur la magie que sur l’idéalisme sont non seulement réellement rationnelles et compréhensibles, mais philosophiquement plus cohérentes et novatrices qu’on ne l’a admis jusqu’à présent. During the last seventeen years of his life, Schiller struck up a productive, if complicated, friendship with already famous and influential <a href="http://www.poemhunter.com/johann-wolfgang-von- goethe/">Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe</a>. They frequently discussed issues concerning aesthetics, and Schiller encouraged Goethe to finish works he left as sketches. This relationship and these discussions led to a period now referred to as Weimar Classicism. They also worked together on Xenien, a collection of short satirical poems in which both Schiller and Goethe challenge opponents to their philosophical vision. <b>Life</b> Friedrich Schiller was born on 10 November 1759, in Marbach, Württemberg as the only son of military doctor Johann Kaspar Schiller (1733–96), and Elisabeth Dorothea Kodweiß (1732–1802). They also had five daughters. His father was away in the Seven Years' War when Friedrich was born. He was named after king Frederick the Great, but he was called Fritz by nearly everyone. Kaspar Schiller was rarely home during the war, but he did manage to visit the family once in a while. His wife and children also visited him occasionally wherever he happened to be stationed. When the war ended in 1763, Schiller's father became a recruiting officer and was stationed in Schwäbisch Gmünd. The family moved with him. Due to the high cost of living—especially the rent—the family moved to nearby Lorch. -

19th Century American Authors, Literature, Informational Texts, and Visual Representation (Correlating to Cottonwood Middle School’s 8th Grade Language Arts textbook: The Elements of Literature) Lisa Ashley Cottonwood Middle School Cottonwood, AZ NEH Summer Institute 2009 Introduction and Rationale Having participated in this year’s Picturing Early America: People, Places, and Events 1770-1870, a four-week-long summer institute on interpreting and teaching early American art, my goal for the upcoming 2009-2010 school year is to incorporate visual references to EACH of my 8th grade Language Arts literature lessons. Being a Title One, low income school, our classroom materials are limited. We do have, however, classroom sets of the Holt textbook, Elements of Literature. The text contains fictional prose from the American authors Edgar Allen Poe, Mark Twain, and Nathanial Hawthorne. Additionally, the text also contains a nonfiction piece on Harriet Tubman and The Underground Railroad. Goals I have begun to build files with 19th century images of authors and illustrations of their works. These files will be available for any other teachers who would like to use them and who teach similar content in their English/Language Arts classrooms. This Power Point is just the beginning presentation of my files. National Endowment for the Humanities “Picturing America” Images Because our district was awarded a set of these images, I hope to enrich our current Language Arts curriculum by creating lessons connecting the images to as many reading and writing activities as possible. This endeavor to couple texts with images will be an ongoing, continuous process for me this year: I will need to find images of prints, paintings, and illustrations that are suitable and engaging for my students and pair them with activities that will extend and enrich our already existing texts. -

The poems are given in full; other items are often in extract. Brieffootnotes are provided, and there is a useful introduction. Interpretation of the material is largely left to the reader. Frauenbriefe der Romantik, ed. Katja Behrens (Insel Taschenbuch, 545), Frankfurt, Insel, 449 pp. + 18 illus, contains a selection ofletters by Karoline von Giinderode, Bettina von Arnim, Rahel Varnhagen, Caroline Schlegel-Schelling, Dorothea Veit-Schlegel, and Susette Gontard. There are adequate notes, a list of persons mentioned, a perceptive postscript, but no index. Dichter-Garten. Erster Gang: Violen, ed. Gerhard Schulz (Seltene Texte aus der deutschen Romantik, 2), Bern, Lang, 1979,38 + vii + 362 pp., isa facsimile reprint of the 1807 edition, which was edited by 'Rostorf' (Novalis's brother, Karl von Hardenberg), and which contains poems by him, and by Friedrich Schlegel, 'Sylvester' (Georg Anton von Hardenberg), and Sophie Bernhardi, as well as the latter's tragedy Egidio und Isabella. Schulz gives a succinct account of the significance of this anthology for the Romantic movement. -

Karl Ameriks, University of Notre Dame “Kant’s Elliptical Path: On the Stages, Limits, and Aftermath of Critical Philosophy” Karl Ameriks is the McMahon-Hank Professor of Philosophy at the University of Notre Dame and specializes in the history of modern philosophy, continental philosophy, and modern German philosophy. Much of his research is dedicated to the study of Immanuel Kant about whom he has published multiple books. His most recent monographs include Kant's Theory of Mind: An Analysis of the Paralogisms of Pure Reason (2000), and Kant and the Fate of Autonomy: Problems in the Appropriation of the Critical Philosophy (2000), Interpreting Kant’s Critiques (2003), Kant and the Historical Turn: Philosophy as Critical Interpretation (2006), and more than 100 articles and scholarly writings. He is a founding co-editor of Internationales Jahrbuch des Deutschen Idealismus (International Yearbook of German Idealism) and since 1994 he has served as a co-editor of the approximately 70-volume series, Cambridge Texts in the History of Philosophy. He has served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Journal of the History of Philosophy and on the editorial boards of Owl of Minerva (Hegel Society of America), Critical Horizons, Kant Yearbook, Oxford Philosophical Concepts, and Philosophisches Jahrbuch. A faculty fellow in Notre Dame’s Nanovic Institute for European Studies, Professor Ameriks was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS) in 2009. Among his many prestigious honors and awards are several fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), the Earhart Foundation (most recently in 2010) and an Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship. -

Resumen Hace doscientos años que el filósofo alemán Dietrich Tiedemann publicó la primera descripción del desarrollo psicológico de un niño. En este trabajo se examinan los antecedentes de las observa- ciones de Tiedemann, así como el contexto en que se producen y los presupuestos filosóficos que las orientan. Se sugiere que en el trabajó de Tiedernann aparecen por vez primera importantes observaciones que se han convertido en temas centrales de la actual psicología del desarrollo. Se termina analizando la influencia posterior de esa obra y las razones que explican el impacto reduci- do que tuvo en los años siguientes a su publicación. Dietrich Tiedemann: Child Psychology two hundred years ago Abstract The German philosopher Dietrich Tiedemann published two hundred years ago Me first known description of Me psychological development of a child. In the present paper, Me antecedents of Me observations made by Tiedemann are examined as well as the context and philosophical pre- suppositions which guide the study.
