9.1 Roads and Major Highways

9.1.1 Major Highways

Southgate is well served by the 3 Provincial Highways that form its boundaries.

Hwy 10 connects to Owen Sound to the north and Hwy 410, 401 and 403 and Toronto to the south. Hwy 401 connects to Toronto and eastern Canada to the east and Waterloo, London and the US border crossings. Hwy 403 connects to Hamilton and the Niagara US border crossings. Southbound on Hwy 10 also connects to Canadian largest airport, Pearson International in Toronto.

The Ministry of Transportation has recently resurfaced, widened the shoulders, upgraded the signage and re-did the culverts along Hwy 10 all the way through the Municipality and south to Shelburne and north to Flesherton.

Hwy 6 connects to Owen Sound and to Hwy 401 in Guelph. Hwy 401 connects to Waterloo, London and the US border crossings. 9.1.2 County Roads

The Transportation Services Department provides maintenance and construction on 877 kilometers of County Roads, and maintenance and repairs on 189 culverts and bridges with a span greater than three meters. The main administrative office is located in the County Administration Building with highways depots located in Dundalk, Chatsworth, Durham and The Blue Mountains.

9.1.3 Local Roads

The Township of Southgate provides maintenance and construction on a large network of local roads including approximately 482 km of roads. Approximately 203 km of roads are hard surface and about 289 km are gravel surface. Maintenance and repairs are carried out on 676 culverts, 766 road signs, 127 bridge structures and 285 street lights. There are works depots located in Holstein, Dundalk and Hopeville.

The Transportation Department is responsible for all aspects of road construction and maintenance including but not limited to:

• Street sweeping & litter pick-up • Winter maintenance of roads and sidewalks • Street Signs • Roadside weed maintenance and bushing • Road surface maintenance • Ditching, culvert & bridge maintenance • Street lights

Saugeen Mobility and Regional Transit is a specialized public transit service providing transportation solutions to the residents of Southgate and 7 other municipalities in Grey and Bruce Counties.

Specialty mobility services are provided to residents who cannot because of their physical or mental challenges travel by conventional transit or taxi. These challenges include the required use of crutches, a cane, a walker or wheelchair; visual impairments; cognitive impairments such as Alzheimer’s and/or developmental challenges. Challenges need not be permanent; they can be temporary and/or seasonal.

9.2.1 Toronto Pearson International Airport

Pearson International Airport in Toronto is Canada’s largest international airport and one of the world’s busiest airports with commercial flights and connections all over the world. Pearson is also one of the busiest cargo airports with Fed Ex having a building next to the airport. Pearson Airport is located 105 km. (60 miles) or 1.25 hours south of Southgate.

9.2.2 Wiarton-Keppel International Airport

The Wiarton-Keppel International Airport (CYVV) is located at 501262 Grey Rd. 1 in Georgian Bluffs just outside Wiarton. There are 2 runways. Runway 05-23 is asphalt and 5033 ft. long and 150 ft. wide. Runway 11-29 is gravel and is 3456 ft. long and 100 ft. wide. The services at the Airport include: Customs & Port of Entry; 24 hour weather office; AV Gas; Jet “A” fuel; restaurant (Cocoa Vanilla); free Wi-Fi; pilots lounge, washroom & shower; and overnight tie-downs. Helicopters, Owen Sound Flight Services and Tobermory Air Tours operate out of the Airport. Medical emergencies and search & rescue can operate out of the airport. The Airport is owned by the Municipality of Georgian Bluffs.

9.2.3 Waterloo International Airport

The Region of Waterloo International Airport (YKF) is a full-service facility which supports commercial, corporate and general aviation. It has 2 asphalt runways that are 150 ft. wide. Runway 08/26 is 7002 ft. long and 14/32 is 4096 ft. long. The airport is owned and operated by the Regional Municipality of Waterloo.

Daily scheduled air service is provided by American Airlines with twice daily, non-stop service to Chicago and WestJet, offering daily non-stop service to Calgary and weekly service to Orlando. Sunwing Airlines offers weekly direct service to Cuba from December through mid-March.

9.2.4 Saugeen Municipal Airport

The Saugeen Municipal Airport is located just outside Hanover on Grey Rd. 2. It serves both commercial and recreational needs. Runway 01/19 is approximately 4,000 ft. in length and 75 ft. wide. The secondary runway 09/27 is approximately 2,500 ft. long and 50 ft. wide. Both runways are maintained year round and service is available 365 days a year between 9 am and 5 pm. The professionally maintained runways are capable of servicing and accommodating small to midsize corporate jets and larger commuter-type turbo-prop aircraft. Customs clearance is available as needed. Charters and flight training are available from the Flight Academy.

9.2.5 Billy Bishop Regional Airport

The Billy Bishop Regional Airport is a Transport Canada registered airport located about 5 km east of Owen Sound at 203807 Highway 26. The airport is owned and operated by the City of Owen Sound. The

Southgate Community Profile airport serves as a base for an air charter service, sightseeing flights, aircraft maintenance facility and dozens of privately owned aircraft. The airport is also utilized frequently by military for training exercises and personnel transport, by air ambulance services, and by many corporate aircraft from Canada and the U.S. Owen Sound Flight Services Flight School operates out of the airport.

There is a 4000 ft. runway with ARCAL lighting. It is open 7 days a week. The Terminal has WIFI, AME onsite for annuals or repairs most aircraft. Transport Canada maintenance seminars held each spring.

9.2.6 Collingwood Regional Airport

The Collingwood Regional Airport has 2 runways. The asphalt runway 13/31 is 5000 long and 100 feet wide. It is lighted with ARCAL Type K. The grass runway 01/19 is 2450 feet long x 75 feet wide.

Facilities include a Town-owned maintenance building and a public terminal facility with a restaurant. The restaurant is open Wednesday to Sunday year round. Airport operation is provided by F.B.O., North 44 Airport Services.

9.3 Rail Transport

The closest rail transport is in Orangeville. A railway right of way runs 40 km from Orangeville to Dundalk through the Southgate Eco Park.

There are 4 intermodal facilities near Southgate in Mississauga, Brampton and Vaughan.

9.4.1 Port of Owen Sound

The Port of Owen Sound is open for navigation 9 to 10 months of the year. The available docking space is 4500 ft. The largest of lake vessels and ships with 6.40 metres (21 foot) draft can be berthed. The anchorage depth is 11 to 12.2 metres and the cargo pier depth is 6.4 to 7.6 metres. Grain, cement and salt are regularly shipped through the port.

9.4.2 Port of Hamilton

The Port of Hamilton is the largest Canadian port on the Great Lakes and handles more than 10 million tonnes of highly diversified cargo and 600 vessel calls per year. The draft is the St. Lawrence Seaway maximum.

Multipurpose facilities and equipment:

9.4.3 Port of Toronto

The Port of Toronto is one of Canada's largest major inland ports and handles over 2 million tonnes of cargo annually.

The Port's terminal operations include the following facilities and equipment:

• Seven marine berths all, to St. Lawrence Seaway depth (27 feet or 8.2 metres). • Marine terminal building with 150,000 sq. ft. • Container distribution centre with 100,000 sq. ft. (9,300 square metres) of heated storage, inside rail loading dock, inside truck docks, and many container bays • Rail service by Canadian National and Canadian Pacific. Several sidings provide access throughout the area, including directly to the dock and inside the container distribution centre building • Excellent container yard includes container handling equipment and electrical plugs for reefers • Large mobile container top lifters - - 46 tonnes

9.4.4 Port of Goderich

Goderich has the only seaway depth port on the east side of Lake Huron. The local wharfage is 1,400 metres (4,600 ft.) and the harbour depth is 8 metres (26 ft.) with anchorage and cargo pier depth of 6.4 to 7.6 metres. The port can handle lake and ocean vessels up to 222 metres (730 feet) in length.
