We know that belief in the Holy Trinity is essential to our faith and that it takes faith to believe in it. In our Gospel reading, Jesus speaks of the intimacy he shares with the Father and Holy Spirit, giving us a glimpse into the mystery of the Holy Trinity, the feast that we celebrate today. Many times during the day we start our prayers with “In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.” While saying that, we bless ourselves in the shape of the cross. These two things are reminders of our faith, and if we use Holy Water as we come into Church, we add a third dimension. Quite obviously, by saying the words, we profess that our God is one in three. By blessing ourselves with those words, we are declaring that it is through the Cross of Christ that we have been saved. Then when we add the element of Holy Water while saying the words, it reminds us that it is through the saving waters of Baptism that we find ourselves in a personal relationship with Jesus. What a simple symbol but what a powerful impact it generates! Celebrate the feast today with those thoughts. As our thoughts turn to summer and summer vacations and outings, let us not forget the importance of attending Mass on Sunday - wherever we may be. Mass is the one thing we should not take a vacation from. So as we plan our summer, we must make attending Mass a priority, as well as all the other preparations. Remember - Jesus is the reason for Sunday. God Bless, Fr. CONTEXTS FOR PASTORAL CARE: ANGLO-SAXON PRIESTS AND PRIESTLY BOOKS, C. 900–1100 Gerald P. Dyson PhD University of York History March 2016 3 Abstract This thesis is an examination and analysis of the books needed by and available to Anglo-Saxon priests for the provision of pastoral care in the tenth and eleventh centuries. Anglo-Saxon priests are a group that has not previously been studied as such due to the scattered and difficult nature of the evidence. By synthesizing previous scholarly work on the secular clergy, pastoral care, and priests’ books, this thesis aims to demonstrate how priestly manuscripts can be used to inform our understanding of the practice of pastoral care in Anglo-Saxon England. In the first section of this thesis (Chapters 2–4), I will discuss the context of priestly ministry in England in the tenth and eleventh centuries before arguing that the availability of a certain set of pastoral texts prescribed for priests by early medieval bishops was vital to the provision of pastoral care. Additionally, I assert that Anglo- Saxon priests in general had access to the necessary books through means such as episcopal provision and aristocratic patronage and were sufficiently literate to use these texts. The second section (Chapters 5–7) is divided according to different types of priestly texts and through both documentary evidence and case studies of specific manuscripts, I contend that the analysis of individual priests’ books clarifies our view of pastoral provision and that these books are under-utilized resources in scholars’ attempts to better understand contemporary pastoral care.

Raw The Old English poem, The Dream of the Rood, exists in two main versions: two brief extracts carved in runes on the Ruthwell Cross in Dumfriesshire and a much longer text in a tenth-century manuscript at Vercelli in northern Italy.' The runic inscriptions on the Ruthwell Cross are accompanied by carvings of biblical scenes and scenes connected with the eucharist which relate Christ's death on the cross to the Lenten themes of initiation and repentance.2 The Vercelli text, on the other hand, encloses the cross's description of Christ's death within passages celebrating the cross itself, the gold and jewels with which relics of the cross were covered, the veneration offered to these relics and to other crosses, and the role of the cross as Christ's messenger leading the dying believer into God's banqueting hall. The Ruthwell Cross therefore adopts a historical and liturgical approach to the subject of Christ's death, whereas The Dream of the Rood is more concerned with individual devotion. As Eamonn 6 Carragain says, 'The Dream subordinates historical realism to theological coherence.'3 The opening vision of the poem (11.

www.boston-catholic-journal.com Roman Martyrology by Month 1916 Edition January February March April May June July August September October November December The following is the complete text of the Roman Martyrology circa 1900 A.D. Many more Saints and Martyrs have since been entered into this calendar commemorating the heroic faith, the holy deeds, the exemplary lives, and in many cases the glorious deaths of these Milites Christi, or Soldiers of Christ, who gave 1 every fiber of their being to God for His glory, for the sanctification of His Holy Catholic Church, for the conversion of sinners both at home and in partibus infidelium 1, for the salvation of souls, and for the proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, even as He had last commanded His holy Apostles: “Euntes ergo docete omnes gentes: baptizantes eos in nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti. Docentes eos servare omnia quæcumque mandavi vobis.” “Going therefore, teach all nations: baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you.” (St. Matthew 28.19-20) While the Martyrology presented is complete, it nevertheless does not present us with great detail concerning the lives of those whose names are forever indited within it, still less the complete circumstances surrounding and leading up to their martyrdom. For greater detail of their lives, the sources now available on the Internet are extensive and we encourage you to explore them.2 As it stands, the Martyrology is eminently suited to a brief daily reflection that will inspire us to greater fervor, even to imitate these conspicuously holy men and women in whatever measure our own state in life affords us through the grace and providence of Almighty God.
