We have also been recently visited by Alistair Smith, a major educational thinker in the UK, who has identifi ed Thomas Hardye as one of the top ten schools in terms of leadership and progress. He has been commissioned to explore the key elements of successful school leadership through some of the highest achieving schools nationally. His project is entitled ‘10 by 10’ as there are 10 schools identifi ed and Thomas Hardye is one of them.

Goodbye To All That!

It is the time of year when we say goodbye to colleagues. This year we have ten teachers leaving, which in terms of the size of the school is a very small number – it is so pleasant here at Thomas Hardye!

Numerous generations of students have been taught both mathematics and ICT by Mrs Mathias. She began teaching in Dorchester in 1976 and with the creation of this school in 1992 became responsible for ICT. Many will know that the results in her Area are superb and she leaves with out best wishes and thanks. Similarly Mrs Fecher-Roberts has done an exceptional job in leading German and has provided many contacts for the School especially in creating Exchanges.

Others leaving us are Miss Garcia, Mrs Halse, Miss MacKinnon, Mr Morgan, Miss Mowlam, Mrs Pringle, Miss Shaw and Mrs Swaine. We are grateful to all these teachers for their hard work and commitment.

News of new teachers will be in the next edition of Newlines. Newslines Summer 2010 YEAR 9 NEWS

Page 14 www.thomas-hardye.dorset.sch.uk Summer 2010 Newslines As always this has been a very eventful time in the Food Department. Our Year 10 Food and Nutrition students are currently completing their fi rst piece of coursework, which is heavily weighted towards practical work. The students are really rising to the challenge of designing their own recipes, producing some very creative and innovative ideas. Thank you very much for sending them in with ingredients so regularly!

The Year 10 Gifted and Talented students recently enjoyed a Culinary Masterclass with a chef from ...... Bournemouth and Poole College. His brief was to really challenge our most able students, which he succeeded in spectacularly – the students’ fi rst task was to debone a whole chicken!

The Year 11 Food Technology students worked extremely hard on their coursework, with every one of them achieving a grade C or higher. My sincere thanks to my fabulous Food team for their fantastic eff orts on the last year of this course.

We were very pleased that one of our Year 11 students gained 3rd place in the National Final of the Rotary ‘Yes Chef’ competition – her menu included some really interesting combinations such as crab and wasabi paste, and rice pudding with lavender! Very well done to Stephanie Jones.

The A level students have worked equally hard on their coursework, and they have adopted a very mature and conscientious approach to revision. We have some treats lined up for them for the last few weeks of term, including a trip to a local dairy farm, as well as linking up with Goulds Café in Dorchester to GOOD FOOD create, cook and serve a ‘specials’ menu for a week in July. We are starting to look more creatively at ways to increase the space available for Food students in order to accommodate our much larger numbers at both A level and GCSE.

We always like this time of year, when we can visit our local feeder schools - we are visiting Manor Park First School in July during their Arts Week, where the children will be studying Traditional Fairy Tales. We are planning to make gingerbread men!
