In some cases, these are intimately bound up with the works of the master, although the intertextuality of the whole corpus of verse romance transcends the codicological context. I shall review here selected manuscripts in which some epigonal romances have been transmitted and what they can tell us about ways in which these texts were read in the Middle Ages. The romances in question are : Renaut de Bâgé (Beaujeu), Le bel inconnu Paien de Maisières, La mule sans frein Le chevalier à l’épée Raoul de Houdenc, Meraugis de Portlesguez Raoul (de Houdenc ?), La vengeance Raguidel L’âtre périlleux Guillaume le Clerc, Fergus Hunbaut Yder Floriant et Florete Le chevalier aux deux épées Girard d’Amiens, Escanor Claris et Laris Jehan, Les merveilles de Rigomer Compared with Chrétien’s romances, themselves only preserved in half-a- dozen copies on average (but fifteen plus fragments of Perceval), these works are mainly codicological unica, with only Meraugis de Portlesguez, La vengeance Raguidel, L’âtre périlleux, and Fergus surviving in more than one complete exemplar.

    00-frontmatter.qxd 28/07/2009 4:11 PM Page i Prologue | i The Church and Vernacular Literature in Medieval France edited by dorothea kullmann The rapid rise of vernacular literature in medieval France, within a culture which continued to acknowledge Latin as its vehicular language, is a fact that literary historians tend too easily to take for granted. Within a rela- tively short period, stretching roughly from the end of the eleventh century to the thirteenth century, French and Occitan literatures acquired an output and a level of sophistication that made them the leading models for other European literatures. New genres and new subject matters appear one after the other; new ideologies (such as the concept of love developed by the troubadours) are first expressed in vernacular creations; and even learned Latin authors soon feel obliged to take notice of these developments. Should we describe this astonishing chapter of cultural history as the development of a “lay”, or “profane”, literature alongside a Church- dominated learned and religious one, or as the emancipation of vernacular literature from the tutorship of the Church? Is the borderline between “lay” and “religious” texts and genres really as clear-cut as some literary histories would make us believe? How then did these new genres of written literature come into being in a culture in which the Church held the monopoly on education, including training in writing? Did the Church as an institution play any role in the birth and expansion of vernacular literature? In the present volume, specialists from the disciplines of linguistics, lit- erature, history and musicology address the various aspects of this complex of questions.

Lat. 1725) et de Turin (BUN, L.IV 33). Les interventions du scribe Éditeur(s) visent autant le texte que le péritexte : s’il corrige le style, la thématique et le Les Presses de l’Université de Montréal dispositif narratologique disloqués que l’on associe à l’écriture de Raoul de Houdenc, il propose également un prologue et un programme iconographique qui réorientent le roman vers le didactisme plutôt que vers le divertissement, ISSN visée qui était classiquement la sienne.

Works are not always referred to by a consistent title, authors’ names can be spelled in more than one way, and conventions are not fixed as to whether an author is indexed (or catalogued, or cited) by first name or surname. As a general rule, authors up to the end of the thirteenth century are indexed by their first name (e.g. Chre´tien de Troyes under ‘C’), and referred to by either the full name or the first name alone (‘Chre´tien’ or ‘Chre´tien de Troyes’; not ‘de Troyes’ and certainly not ‘Troyes’). Authors from the fourteenth century onwards are standardly indexed by surname (e.g. Machaut, Guillaume de; Molinet, Jean) and referred to either by their full name or by the surname alone. However, Christine de Pizan (sometimes spelled Pisan) is here indexed under ‘C’ because she is usually referred to as ‘Christine’, and only rarely as ‘de Pizan/Pisan’ or ‘Pizan/ Pisan’. Although the form of reference adopted in this index reflects current norms and can be safely followed by readers, when using older books or library catalogues they should be advised that they may need to cast around before successfully locating the name or title they are seeking.
