Chapter 1 Introduction
CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 BACKGROUND 1.1.1 Pune is well known as the ‘Queen of Deccan’ due to its scenic beauty and rich natural resources. Besides, it is famous for its religious and historical places. Pune city is known in the world map because of its educational, research and development institutions. The district also has an importance as an important military base. Pune is the most industrialized district in western Maharastra and a famous IT hub in the country. Pune exemplifies an indigenous Marathi culture and ethos, in which education, arts & crafts and theaters are given due prominence. Pune is the cultural capital of Maharastra. It is the birth place of the poet-saint Tukaram. It is the home of great freedom fighters like Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Agarkar and Gopal Krishna Gokhale. Jayant Narlikar, the famous contemporary scientist is from Pune. 1.1.2 Location - Pune district is located between 17 0 54’ and 10 0 24’ North latitude and 73 019 and 75 0 10’ East longitude. The district has geographical area of 15.642 sq km. The district is bound by Ahmadnagar district on the north-east, Solapur district on the south-east, Satara district on south, Raigad district on the west and Thane district on the north-west. Pune district forms a part of the tropical monsoon land and therefore shows a significant seasonal variation in temperature as well as rainfall conditions. Climate of the western region of Pune is cool whereas the eastern part is hot and dry. 1.1.3 Earhquake Prone Areas – Due to the presence of many structural hills within Pune district, it is likely place for earthquakes. -

06.09.2020 Delhi Metro Ready to Resume Its Services
PRESS RELEASE New Delhi, dated: 06.09.2020 DELHI METRO READY TO RESUME ITS SERVICES AFTER 169 DAYS The Delhi Metro is ready to resume its services, which were suspended since 22nd March 2020 due to Corona pandemic, from tomorrow i.e, 7th September 2020 onwards from Yellow Line (Samyapur Badli to HUDA City Centre) in a staggered manner. Over a period of next five days i.e, by 12th September, rest of the Lines will also be made operational with all safety measures in place to check the spread of Covid-19 in the Metro premises which requires everyone to follow a new normal of social distancing, face mask and hand sanitisation. On this Monday and Tuesday, only the Yellow line (49 KM with 37 stations consisting of 20 underground and 17 elevated stations) will remain operational for a period of four hours each in the morning (7 AM to 11 AM) and evening (4 PM to 8 PM). Trains will be available with a headway varying from 2’44’’ to 5’28” (at different stretches) with 57 trains performing around 462 trips. The same will be further extended in a graded manner from 9th to 12th September along with other Lines. The resumption of services with a new normal to prevent the spread of Covid-19 desires public to understand and co-operate with DMRC/CISF personnel on following aspects for a comfortable and safe commuting experience: - 1. USE EARMARKED GATES ONLY: To maintain orderliness and regulate flow of passengers with social distancing norms, only one or two gates will be kept open for entry /exit of passengers at a station. -

There are around 148 cities around the world which has a metro system with nearly 540 metro lines, 9,000 stations and 11,000 kilometres of line infrastructure . The world’s metro systems carry 150 million passengers per day. The earliest metro system, the London Underground, first electrified underground line opened in 1890, was the world's first metro system. With more than 500 km of infrastructure, Shanghai has the world’s longest Metro network. London is the longest non Asian Metro network in the ranking, with New York, Moscow, Madrid and Paris. The objective of this research is a preliminary examination of metro rail network extensiveness versus the city’s needs, aiming to assist the estimation of the adequacy of a metro network. This study is concentrated on comparing mature metro system in several large European cities with Indian cities based on a selection of indicators relating metro network characteristics i.e. Length and no. of stations, city characteristics eg. Population and density. A methodology exploiting these macroscopic characteristics in a strategic planning context was developed and a combination of related indicators is proposed. This methodology is applied for the estimation of the degree of adequacy of the current Athens, Greece metro network in a relation to city’s needs. Findings indicate that the Athens metro network cannot be yet characterized as adequate and specific proposals are made in terms of future network extensions. -

The lack of walkability to public transport, along with the deficiency of other vital factors like frequency and safety, often result in people shifting towards unsustainable transport modes like personal motor vehicles. People near Transit (PNT) is an effective proxy indicator to measure how well a city provides transit access to its residents. It aids in assessing urban transport systems and services while exposing the accessibility gaps in the existing systems. Furthermore, the analysis facilitates the integration of land use and transportation, while providing guidance on the planning of future transit corridors with better frequencies. -
