Multicultural Shakespeare: Translation, Appropriation and Performance vol. 14 (29), 2016; DOI: 10.1515/mstap-2016-0013 ∗ Shoichiro Kawai Some Japanese Shakespeare Productions in 2014-15 Abstract: This essay focuses on some Shakespeare productions in Japan during 2014 and 2015. One is a Bunraku version of Falstaff, for which the writer himself wrote the script. It is an amalgamation of scenes from The Merry Wives of Windsor and those from Henry IV. It was highly reputed and its stage design was awarded a 2014 Yomiuri Theatre Award. Another is a production of Much Ado about Nothing produced by the writer himself in a theatre-in-the-round in his new translation. Another is a production of Macbeth arranged and directed by Mansai Nomura the Kyogen performer. All the characters besides Macbeth and Lady Macbeth were performed by the three witches, suggesting that the whole illusion was produced by the witches. It was highly acclaimed worldwide. Another is a production of Hamlet directed by Yukio Ninagawa, with Tatsuya Fujiwara in the title role. It was brought to the Barbican theatre. There were also many other Shakespeare productions to commemorate the 450th anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth. Among them was a Bunraku (Japanese traditional puppet theatre) version of Falstaff, for which I wrote the playscript in the pseudo-classical, rhythmical Japanese called gidayu-bushi. -

A Survey of Shakespearean Performances in Japan from 2001-2010 Kosai Ishihara Osamu Hirokawa 1. An Overview of Shakespearean Performance in Japan We are going to survey the performances on Shakespeare in this century. The Shakespeare Institute of Komazawa University has been compiling data on Shakespeare in Japan. We would like to exhibit how widely Shakespeare has been appreciated by people in and around Tokyo on the evidence of the performance records for the ten years from 2001 to 2010, based mainly upon the data of Nihon Sheikusupia Soran ( A General Survey of Shakespeare in Japan), composed by Takashi Sasaki, a member of The Komazawa University Shakespeare Institute. *(Table 1) The annual number of performances in the 1980s came to around 20-30 but increased to about 60-70 in the 1990s. The peak year of the 1990s was 1991, when the Fifth World Shakespeare Congress was held in Tokyo; in the autumn the Japan Festival of Great Britain was held in Great Britain. A total of 93 plays was performed that year. As the graph above shows, the lower rate of the early 2000s peaked again in 2002. In the recent years more than 100 Shakespearean productions have been staged. The fi gures include all performances, varying - 1 - Kosai Ishihara, Osamu Hirokawa from small amateur groups to large professional companies, from authentic British productions to traditional Japanese productions. Most of the plays staged in Japan are performed in Japanese, sometimes highly adapted. Once Shakespeare’s plays are translated into Japanese they are no longer strictly Shakespearean, since the structural differences between English and Japanese detract from his beautiful rhyme, accent, rhythm and imagery. -

JETRO, or the Japan External Trade Organization, is a government-related organization that works to promote mutual trade and investment between Japan and the rest of the world. Originally established in 1958 to promote Japanese exports abroad, JETRO’s core focus in the 21st century has shifted toward promoting foreign direct investment into Japan and helping small to medium-sized Japanese firms maximize their global business potential. UNIJAPAN is a non-profit organization established in 1957 by the Japanese film industry under the auspice of the Government of Japan for the purpose of promoting Japanese cinema abroad. Initially named “Association for the Diffusion of Japanese Film Abroad” (UniJapan Film), in 2005 it joined hands with the organizer of Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF), to form a combined, new organization. This performance was held in conjunction with the “30th Anniversary of the Look East Policy”. Tickets were sold out days before the show for 400 seats. It was privilege to host this traditional art-form of Japanese comedy theatre for this exclusive one night only live show by the renowned Kyogen actor Mansai Nomura. This performance was made possible by the generous sponsorship of Nomura Securities Malaysia. Joining us for the night was students from ASWARA, UiTM, UM and UPSI majoring in theatre and performing arts. Hamlet: Ninagawa Company by Kevin Quarmby. Written on 2015-05-21. First published in the ISE Chronicle. For the production: Hamlet (2015, Ninagawa Company, UK). The Barbican auditorium fills with smoke. Through the gloom, two stylized diminutive shrine figures stand guard to stage left, their eyeless gaze searching off into the distance. Behind, we see the chipped and broken windows of a two-story tenement. A Japanese courtyard within what seems an abandoned industrial complex. Centre stage, a screen projects its Japanese and English message, that “This is a poor quarter of Japan in the 19th century, which is when Hamlet was first introduced to Japan. Now in the 21st century, we Japanese begin our play Hamlet.” All is silent. Ominous. Neglected. Decaying. Onto the expansive stage troop Yukio Ninagawa’s Hamlet cast. Arranging themselves in a straight line facing the audience, they bow with dignity. Red, grey, purple costumes look sumptuously stylish, materially evoking a Japano-Edwardianness that might grace any Paris Scene. University of Victoria. Immediately we are thrown into darkness, a somber light offering glimpses of Bernardo and Marcellus as they scurry around, brandishing unwieldy halberds. Constrained by glinting armor, and decidedly Northern European medieval sallets that reflect the East-West cross- cultural theme, the guards are frighted by the Ghost of Hamlet’s Father, who appears through an upper-level sliding glazed panel stage left. -

For your cultural life in Hiroshima 七五三 Shichigosan (7-5-3 Day) Shichigosan is a traditional observance of children’s growth. Boys of three and five years of age and girls of three and seven are dressed up and taken to a shrine. There they pray that the god will protect the children as they grow. The date is really November 15th, which is the day on which shogun Iemitsu (A.D. 1604 – 1651) took his weak son for a blessing. But it goes on for several weeks from the start of November, especially on weekends at major shrines. Girls (and sometimes boys) aged three, boys aged five, and girls aged seven are dressed up in their finest clothes (haregi) and taken to the shrine to pray for good health and a long life. There is a short purification ceremony and a priest reads out the children’s names to the deity to give thanks and ask for protection. After the ceremony, the children are given long paper bags (kesho-bukuro) containing red and white sticks of chitose-ame (=1,000-year candy) made from boiled mizu-ame (thick malt syrup). The bags are colorfully decorated with many old symbols of long life and good fortune: pine trees, bamboo and plum blossom (the three together known as sho-chiku-bai), cranes, turtles, noshi, the rays of the sun, Daikoku’s lucky hammer, daruma, coral, dice, and maybe a picture of Kintaro, the strong boy from old folk tales.
