Hardy Cyclamen. Thomas Hood wrote a poem which neatly sums up how most of us feel about this time of the year. It starts: ‘No sun - no moon! No morn -no noon! No dawn- no dusk! No proper time of day!’ The poem finishes: ‘No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees No fruits, no flowers, no leaves, no birds, November!’ Of course we have fruits and flowers at the moment and leaves too, they are hanging on late this year, but the glorious fire of Autumn leaves collapses into a soggy mush this month and many of the flowers that are left are the brave and pathetic last ditch attempts of summer flowering plants. Cyclamen hederifolium though, is still looking good after making its first appearance as early as August. This plant used to be called Cyclamen neapolitanum but is no longer known by that name. It is a little gem with ivy shaped leaves, hence the name ‘hederifolium’ which means ivy-leafed. The heart-shaped leaves differ enormously in shape and size; most of them are exquisitely marbled in grey or silver. Sometimes the leaves appear before the flowers, sometimes the flowers appear first, and sometimes they come together. The flowers have five reflex petals and they come in varying shades of pink with a deep v-shaped magenta blotch at the base. There is enormous variation in the shape and size of the flowers. Some of mine are as big as the florist’s cyclamen, Cyclamen persicum which of course is not hardy. The lovely white form is equally desirable. -

Receive 10 April, 2014; Accepted 24 April, 2014 The status of medicinal plants in the high mountains of northern Jordan was evaluated. A total of 227 plant species belonging to 54 genera and 60 families were recorded. The survey is based on field trips conducted in the areas that include Salt, Jarash, Balka, Amman and Irbid governorates. Line transect method was used; collection of plant species was done and voucher specimens were deposited. A map for the target area was provided; the location of the study area grids in relation to their governorate was included. The Alien Vascular Flora of Tuscany (Italy)
Quad. Mus. St. Nat. Livorno, 26: 43-78 (2015-2016) 43 The alien vascular fora of Tuscany (Italy): update and analysis VaLerio LaZZeri1 SUMMARY. Here it is provided the updated checklist of the alien vascular fora of Tuscany. Together with those taxa that are considered alien to the Tuscan vascular fora amounting to 510 units, also locally alien taxa and doubtfully aliens are reported in three additional checklists. The analysis of invasiveness shows that 241 taxa are casual, 219 naturalized and 50 invasive. Moreover, 13 taxa are new for the vascular fora of Tuscany, of which one is also new for the Euromediterranean area and two are new for the Mediterranean basin. Insieme alla lista dei taxa che si considerano alieni per la Toscana che ammontano a 510 unità, si segnalano in tre ulteriori liste anche i taxa che si ritengono essere presenti nell’area di studio anche con popolazioni non autoctone o per i quali sussistono dubbi sull’effettiva autoctonicità. L’analisi dello status di invasività mostra che 241 taxa sono casuali, 219 naturalizzati e 50 invasivi. Inoltre, 13 taxa rappresentano una novità per la fora vascolare di Toscana, dei quali uno è nuovo anche per l’area Euromediterranea e altri due sono nuovi per il bacino del Mediterraneo. Gaertn. and Clerodendrum splendens G. Don, two members of the cosmopolitan family Lamiaceae, are successfully acclimatized in Egypt. The current study aimed to evaluate the local plants as potential candidates for implementation in pharmaceutical industries, which necessitates an intensive investigation of safety and bioactivity of the cited species. To ensure quality and purity of the raw material, criteria for characterization of and/or discrimination between the two species were established via botanical profiling, proximate analysis, phytochemical screening and UPLC analysis. The leaves were subjected to comparative biological and chemical study to select the most suitable from the medicinal and economic standpoints. In this respect, the antioxidant cyotoxic and antimicrobial potentials of the defatted ethanol (70%) extracts of the tested samples were assessed in-vitro. Meanwhile, the chemical composition of the leaves was examined through qualitative and quantitative comparative analyses of the phenolic components. In this respect, The leaves of C. inerme were selected for more intensive both phytochemical and biological investigation. -

Department of Plant Ecology, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Life, University of Sétif, Setif 19000, Algeria Abstract: On the high plains of Setif, the old inhabitants have built a real knowledge of medicinal plants properties. Traditional knowledge about plants and their properties are still fairly common. Our scientific motivation stems from the absence of any flora and ethnobotanical study in this area. During different field campaigns, we identified 93 medicinal species belonging to 32 botanical families. This number reflects the wealth of medicinal plants that are still traditionally used. To gather as much information on the use of plants, a series of ethnobotanical surveys were conducted in the field during periods of picking from villagers, herbalists and traditional healers. According to those surveyed, the fresh leaves and seeds are considered the most popular and common parts that can address several diseases where oral and dermal administration are recommended. The most used plants are: Artemisia herba-alba, Argyrolobium saharae, Gymnosporia senegalensis, Ormenis africana, Pallenis spinosa, Thymus ciliatus, Pistacia atlantica, Paronychia arabica, Globularia alypum, Ajuga iva, Peganum harmala, Ruta chalepensis, Tapsia garganica, Pituranthos scoparius. Djebel Zdimm offers floristic diversity and a sizeable traditional therapeutic knowledge. The safeguarding and preservation of this ancestral heritage is one of our objectives in this semi-arid steppe. -

Special features and characteristics of special interest: Cyclamen is known as sow- bread, as pigs relish the tubers. Maintenance, Cultural requirements and Post Harvest Treatments: The right amount of water is the key to success. ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION AND PROTECTED AREAS IN PALESTINE CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES Report submitted to The Hanns Seidel Foundation 2 Foreword This publication bases on the report “Environmental conservation and protected areas in Palestine: Challenges and Opportunities” by Dr. Mazin Qumsieh, Betlehem University and Dr. Zuhair Amr, Jordan University of Science and Technology, which have been contracted by Hanns Seidel Foundation for this task. The report has been written in the framework of a project funded by the European Union’s Partnership for Peace initiative. The aim of the report is to portray the current state of nature protection in Palestine, to fathom the potential for improved environmental conservation and nature reserve management, and to suggest priorities for future environmental protection efforts. The current version is the result of an intense review process, which involved Palestinian Experts, the Environment Quality Authority as well as the team of Hanns Seidel Foundation. In addition to that, it has been edited to improve the reading. Hence, the original report written by the contracted authors has been considerably altered and shortened. Such a review always requires compromises between the original text and all the studied opinions. Often, such a compromise will not entirely please neither the authors, nor the reviewers and the contracting party. Nevertheless, we have carried out a lot of effort to harmonize all positions and to include the very many recommendations and comments, while keeping to the original. All mistakes and inaccuracies, naturally, can be entirely attributed to the contracting authority, which is the Hanns Seidel Foundation.
