  • Introduction
Introduction BY ROBERT WELTSCH Downloaded from https://academic.oup.com/leobaeck/article/8/1/IX/938684 by guest on 27 September 2021 No greater discrepancy can be imagined than that between the three men with whom we begin the present volume of the Year Book. It is almost a reflection of what, since Sir Charles Snow's famous lecture, has become the current formula of "The Two Cultures". Ismar Elbogen devoted his whole life to Jewish scholarship, he was a true representative of the humanities. Fritz Haber on the other hand was a great scientist, though his biographer, doctor and friend, is eager to point out that at his time the two cultures were not yet so far apart, and that Haber was devoted to poets like Goethe and himself made verses. But what about our third man? For his sake, we may be tempted to add to the array a "Third Culture", the world of Mammon, seen not from the aspect of greed, but, in this special case, to be linked in a unique way with active work for the good of fellow-men — in philanthropy of a magnitude which has very few parallels in the history of all nations. There is little that we could add, in the way of introduction, to the story of Baron Hirsch as told by Mr. Adler-Rudel. Among the Jewish public it is not always remembered that the man was a German Jew, a descendant of a Bavarian family of court bankers who acquired the castle of Gereuth. Owing to the early transfer of his residence to Brussels and later to Paris, and perhaps also due to his collaboration with the Alliance Israelite Universelle, Hirsch is in the mind of the uninformed public often associated with French Jewry.

  • CHORAL PROBLEMS in HANDEL's MESSIAH THESIS Presented to The
*141 CHORAL PROBLEMS IN HANDEL'S MESSIAH THESIS Presented to the Graduate Council of the North Texas State University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of MASTER OF MUSIC By John J. Williams, B. M. Ed. Denton, Texas May, 1968 PREFACE Music of the Baroque era can be best perceived through a detailed study of the elements with which it is constructed. Through the analysis of melodic characteristics, rhythmic characteristics, harmonic characteristics, textural charac- teristics, and formal characteristics, many choral problems related directly to performance practices in the Baroque era may be solved. It certainly cannot be denied that there is a wealth of information written about Handel's Messiah and that readers glancing at this subject might ask, "What is there new to say about Messiah?" or possibly, "I've conducted Messiah so many times that there is absolutely nothing I don't know about it." Familiarity with the work is not sufficient to produce a performance, for when it is executed in this fashion, it becomes merely a convention rather than a carefully pre- pared piece of music. Although the oratorio has retained its popularity for over a hundred years, it is rarely heard as Handel himself performed it. Several editions of the score exist, with changes made by the composer to suit individual soloists or performance conditions. iii The edition chosen for analysis in this study is the one which Handel directed at the Foundling Hospital in London on May 15, 1754. It is version number four of the vocal score published in 1959 by Novello and Company, Limited, London, as edited by Watkins Shaw, based on sets of parts belonging to the Thomas Coram Foundation (The Foundling Hospital).

TOCCATA Bernhard CLASSICS SEKLES Chamber Music Violin Sonata, Op. 44 Cello Sonata, Op. 28 Chaconne on an Eight-Bar March-Theme, Op. 38, for viola and piano ℗ Capriccio in Four Movements for piano trio Solomia Soroka, violin and viola Noreen Silver, cello Phillip Silver, piano INCLUDES FIRST RECORDING REDISCOVERING BERNHARD SEKLES by Phillip Silver he present-day obscurity of Bernhard Sekles illustrates how porous is contemporary knowledge of twentieth-century music: during his lifetime Sekles was prominent as teacher, administrator and composer alike. History has accorded him footnote status in two of these areas of endeavour: as an educator with an enviable list of students, and as the Director of the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt from 923 to 933. During that period he established an opera school, much expanded the area of early-childhood music-education and, most notoriously, in 928 established the world’s irst academic class in jazz studies, a decision which unleashed a storm of controversy and protest from nationalist and fascist quarters. But Sekles was also a composer, a very good one whose music is imbued with a considerable dose of the unexpected; it is traditional without being derivative. He had the unenviable position of spending the prime of his life in a nation irst rent by war and then enmeshed in a grotesque and ultimately suicidal battle between the warring political ideologies that paved the way for the Nazi take-over of 933. he banning of his music by the Nazis and its subsequent inability to re-establish itself in the repertoire has obscured the fact that, dating back to at least 99, the integration of jazz elements in his works marks him as one of the irst European composers to use this emerging art-form within a formal classical structure.
