These attempts were supported by the rapprochement initiated after years of con-flict between Venice and Buda (the traditional anti-Ottoman center of East-Central Europe), as well as by a significant decrease of Hungarian-Molda-vian hostilities (the Moldavian fought to diminish the control of the Geno-ese over their colonies which had come under Moldavia’s nominal rule). These evolutions set the stage for John Hunyadi’s later policy as well as for most of the later conflicts of the 1440s, when the eventual failure of anti- Ottoman crusading and of the Union of Florence helped to maintain the Pontic balance of power in favor of the Ottoman state and its associates. The Ottoman conquest of Thessalonica compelled her to look to the north. The glory days of the Genoese, the ‘rulers’ the Pontic area, often with Mus-lim (Ottoman, Tartar) support, seemed gone. Byzantium needed all the aid it could get. Venice had apparently also overcome the enduring adversity of Byzantium’s ‘western protector’ and Genoa’s traditional ally, Sigismund of Luxemburg. Buda, officially at peace with the Ottomans (1429-1437), and Krakow, since the 1380s on a predominantly pro- Ottoman political course, had difficulties in controlling their ‘eastern extensions’ to

In our case, his name was Alexandru Roman (1826– 1897), who was not known as a writer or as a scholar amongst his contemporaries. However, his talent was evinced by being a journalist and also by his organizational spirit. Roman graduated from St. Barbara College – Vienna (1845–1848), then he came back to teach at the Romanian gymnasium in Beiu ş. For the negotiations at the time of the Revolution (1849), he was requested to do a lot of work in translation (Neam ţu 1995: 23–26). The request of founding a Romanian university in the Hungarian Kingdom was laid down by the 8th item of the Declaration of Blaj. Twenty years after the Blaj Assembly, Roman republished the Declaration in his newspaper, Federa ţiunea , which led to his imprisonment for one year (January 18, 1870 – January 18, 1871). When it comes to the ideology of the newspaper, it is recommended to mention that during its eight-year life, its leader endured eight lawsuits against him. Mihai Eminescu’s case is the best known, who, under the penname Varro, published three articles in Roman’s newspaper: Să facem un congres (April 17, 1870); În unire e t ăria (April 22, 1870); Echilibrul (May 4 and 11, 1870), exactly when its leader was imprisoned.

    MULTO IN PARVO: JORIS HOEFNAGEL’S ILLUMINATIONS AND THE GATHERED PRACTICES OF CENTRAL EUROPEAN COURT CULTURE by JOAN BOYCHUK B.A., McGill University, 2004 M.A., McGill University, 2006 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE AND POSTDOCTORAL STUDIES (Art History and Theory) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) August 2016 © Joan Boychuk, 2016 Abstract This dissertation examines the works of illumination produced by the itinerant Flemish miniator, Joris Hoefnagel (1542-1600), during his tenure as court artist to the Wittelsbachs and Habsburgs in the last two decades of the sixteenth century. Comprising illuminated manuscripts as well as independent miniatures, the works at the center of this study provide novel insight into Hoefnagel’s practice as an illuminator and also into the status and function of illumination at the Central European courts of Munich, Ambras, and Prague. Not simply extending a traditional interest in the medium at these sites, Hoefnagel’s works on parchment transformed illumination into a new form bringing together a range of practices and discourses associated with the courts, with humanism, and with emerging disciplines dedicated to the production of new knowledge. Artistically inventive and conceptually productive, Hoefnagel’s compositions helped shaped an identity for the artist as a hieroglyphicus—an initiate into and maker of a privileged language of representation. Unlike other medieval and early modern art, the illuminated page could bring together, on one surface, different media (text and image), genres (heraldry, portraiture, nature studies, biblical narrative, and ornament, among others), and modes of representation (realism, illusionism, symbolism, and abstraction).

This is possible and easier thanks to the creation of new innovations about means of communication and means of transport. These factors (so the desire to be more united and the consequent creation of new innovations) have created a new era known as the “era of the globalization”. There are two consequences of the phenomenon of the globalization which are extremely important in my work: the international migration and the evolution of the means of communication.

    A Changing Mosaic: Multicultural Exchange in the Norman Palaces of Twelfth-Century Sicily by Dana Katz A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Art University of Toronto © Copyright by Dana Katz 2016 A Changing Mosaic: Multicultural Exchange in the Norman Palaces of Twelfth-Century Sicily by Dana Katz Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Art University of Toronto 2016 Abstract This dissertation examines the twelfth-century residences associated with the Norman Hautevilles in the parklands that surrounded their capital at Palermo. One of the best-preserved ensembles of medieval secular architecture, the principal monuments are the palaces of La Zisa and La Cuba, the complexes of La Favara and Lo Scibene, the hunting lodge at Parco, and the palace at Monreale. The Norman conquest of Sicily in the previous century dramatically altered the local population’s religious and cultural identity. Nevertheless, an Islamic legacy persisted in the park architecture, arranged on axial plans with waterworks and ornamented with muqarnas vaults. By this time, the last Norman king, William II, and his court became aligned with contemporaries in the Latin West, and Muslims became marginalized in Sicily. Part One examines the modern “discovery” and reception of the twelfth-century palaces. As secular examples built in an Islamic mode, they did not fit preconceived paradigms of medieval Western architecture in the scholarly literature, greatly endangering their preservation. My examination reconstructs the vast landscape created by the Norman kings, who modified their surroundings on a monumental scale. Water in the parklands was harnessed to provide for ii artificial lakes and other waterscapes onto which the built environment was sited.
