sustainability Article The Return to Europe or the Return to Solidarity? Gda ´nskShipyard—Case Study in Organizational Culture Gra˙zynaPrawelska-Skrzypek and Agata Morgan * Faculty of Management and Social Communication, Jagiellonian University, 4 Łojasiewicza Street, 30-348 Cracow, Poland; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected] Received: 14 May 2020; Accepted: 26 August 2020; Published: 28 August 2020 Abstract: Objective: This paper is an attempt to give an analysis of the cultural impact of “Solidarity” on Polish organizational culture, and the process of substituting that message for an alternative one—neoliberal organizational culture. Keywords: responsible management; solidarity culture; postcolonial theories; postsocialist space 1. Introduction The focus of this study is solidarity culture as a fundamental part of Polish organizational culture after the year 1980 and its collision with neoliberal values, which were introduced in Poland during the transition process to a free market economy in the year 1989. Our research aims at investigating the role of organizational culture as a fundamental part of sustainable development in the Polish context. A series of changes at the regional level in Poland and other countries of Central and Eastern Europe, such as the fall of communism, the introduction of a neoliberal market economy, and the inclusion of these countries into the European Union, influenced the transition from a cultural message of solidarity to one of very pronounced neoliberalism. In addition to the aforementioned changes, it is important to add the state-level changes, which included globalization and the development of media, digital media in particular, all of which could be classified as non-political influences.

MIGHTIER THAN THE SWORD: POLISH INDEPENDENT PUBLISHING, 1976-1989 A Dissertation Submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Georgetown University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History. By Siobhan K. Doucette, M.A. Washington, DC April 11, 2013 Copyright 2013 by Siobhan K. Doucette All Rights Reserved ii MIGHTIER THAN THE SWORD: POLISH INDEPENDENT PUBLISHING, 1976-1989 Siobhan K. Doucette, M.A. Thesis Advisor: Andrzej S. Kamiński, Ph.D. ABSTRACT This dissertation analyzes the rapid growth of Polish independent publishing between 1976 and 1989, examining the ways in which publications were produced as well as their content. Widespread, long-lasting independent publishing efforts were first produced by individuals connected to the democratic opposition; particularly those associated with KOR and ROPCiO. Independent publishing expanded dramatically during the Solidarity-era when most publications were linked to Solidarity, Rural Solidarity or NZS. By the mid-1980s, independent publishing obtained new levels of pluralism and diversity as publications were produced through a bevy of independent social milieus across every segment of society. Between 1976 and 1989, thousands of independent titles were produced in Poland. Rather than employing samizdat printing techniques, independent publishers relied on printing machines which allowed for independent publication print-runs in the thousands and even tens of thousands, placing Polish independent publishing on an incomparably greater scale than in any other country in the Communist bloc. By breaking through social atomization and linking up individuals and milieus across class, geographic and political divides, independent publications became the backbone of the opposition; distribution networks provided the organizational structure for the Polish underground.

What made it worse was the role that the Soviet Union had played in 1939 in the partition of Poland with Hitler’s Germany. A hoped for liberalization of the regime failed in 1956 after Nikita Khrushchev’s “Secret Speech, and Polish riots were put down. Lech Walesa Early Life: Walesa’s family had migrated to Poland from France with his great‐great‐grandfather, Mateusz, in the seventeenth century. Originally, the family estate had included four hundred acres in the Dobrzyn region of Poland surrounding the then small village of Popowo. Walesa’s family history bears the marks of some revolutionary impact. Walesa’s great‐ grandfather, had fled to France after his two brothers were exiled to Siberia. There he gambled away 1/3 of the family lands. Finally returning to Poland, settled in the village and raised his family of twenty‐four children. After World War I, Poland achieved its independence with eth Treaty of Versallies. At that time, Walesa’s father, Bolek married Feliksa Kaminska, but by then the family fortune had dwindled to a pitiful and unsustainable one acre—hardly enough to support a family.

A transition, within the context of South African contemporary history, usually refers to the period in the early 1990s when South Africa underwent a negotiated transition from racial minority rule to a full democracy in 1994. This thesis takes a liberal understanding of South Africa’s transition timeline and is not confined just to South Africa’s political transition, but also examines transitions within transitions. This will be done through three studies beginning with a survey of the global political transitions that took place against the backdrop of South Africa’s domestic political transition in the early 1990s. Secondly, we will look at the role that national historical identity plays in diplomacy and international relations and, more specifically, at the cultivation of a new historic identity in South Africa’s international relations.
