He added that The Lord of the Rings “was an effort to create a situation in which a common greeting would be elen síla lúmenn’ omentielmo,1 and that the phrase long antedated the book” (Letters 264-5). Tolkien often felt guilty about this, his most secret vice. Even as early as 1916, he confessed as much in a letter to Edith Bratt: “I have done some touches to my nonsense fairy language—to its improvement. I often long to work at it and don’t let myself ‘cause though I love it so, it does seem a mad hobby” (Letters 8). Amongst the many pages of what has been collectively called Tolkien’s legendarium, there are several texts which offer historical and philological descriptions of the languages of Arda set in the transmission framework Tolkien invented to link his unique mythology and world-building to a lost English tradition. Some of these works like ‘The Lhammas’, ‘The Etymologies’ and ‘Quendi and Eldar’ are fairly descriptive texts about the languages. If we expand this to the vast philological treasure trove of Tolkien’s papers on the languages (which are still in the process of being edited and published) we also find descriptive name lists, grammars and phonologies that are also set in Tolkien’s transmission framework.

    Early Ilkorin Phonology by Helios De Rosario Martínez Introduction One of the elements that characterize the Elvish languages invented by J.R.R. Tolkien is that he gave them a historical background, wherein the two main tongues were developed with complex relations with other languages and dialects, both prehistoric and contemporary to them. Those languages and dialects are frequently referred to in the linguistic essays, charts and word-lists composed by Tolkien. The most prolific and best known examples are probably in the Lhammas and the Etymologies: the linguistic essay and the etymological dictionary that Tolkien wrote in the middle of the 1930s. But the diversity and historical depth of Elvish languages is also exemplified in earlier writings, although they are not so profuse in examples of languages other than Qenya and Gnomish/Noldorin (or ancient forms of these two), and they have received less attention by scholars. This article aims to analyze Ilkorin (Ilk.), one of those “minor” languages, as it was conceived in the earliest conceptual phases. The adjective Ilkorin, formed from Kôr with the negative prefix il‑ (cf. I:255), was used to name “the Elves that never saw the light of Kôr” (I:231, cf. II:9, 64), and thus the language so called is the native tongue of the Elves who lingered in the Great Lands. I will examine the linguistic texts and narrative commentaries on the Ilkorin language published in the Book of Lost Tales and in the journal Parma Eldalamberon (particularly in the word-lists of no. 13), and follow with an analysis of the facts that are found in them, to show how the concept of that tongue evolved in those years.

Tolkien Introduzione L’Ambarkanta è un saggio breve, sull’origine e la forma del mondo, scritto da J.R.R. alcuni anni dopo aver interrotto la stesura del Quenta Silmarillion (probabilmente 1930-1937), la narrazione che sarebbe poi stata pienamente sviluppata nel Silmarillion vero e proprio. La versione originale è stata pubblicata da Christopher Tolkien nel IV volume della “History of Middle-earth”, The Shaping of Middle-earth, 1986. Qui compaiono anche delle note di Christopher e delle cartine in bianco e nero che schematizzano gli spaccati di Arda e la forma dei continenti nelle varie ere, cartine che ho personalmente ridisegnato, colorandole ed arricchendole di riferimenti. La pagina di copertina porta il seguente frontespizio: Ambarkanta La forma del mondo Rúmil `Cw#6aE4# È interessante notare che, come indicato nell’intestazione, l’autore a cui il saggio viene attribuito è Rúmil, lo stesso studioso di Valinor che, secondo la tradizione, avrebbe inventato la prima forma di scrittura elfica, i Sarati: questo personaggio era giù stato introdotto nei R.R., mentre non figurava nel successivo Quenta. Norse Influences on Tolkien’s Elves and Dwarves1 Peter Wilkin Introduction The ‘mythology’ of J R R Tolkien, best known through his seminal work The Lord of the Rings [1954-5], has unquestionably had a more profound influence on the fantasy genre than any author before or since. To give a brief overview, Tolkien began what would come to be known loosely as the 'Silmarillion' in 1917 and continued developing his mythology intermittently right up until his death in 1973. In 1937 he published The Hobbit in which the hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, undertakes an adventure with a group of dwarves to recover a hoard of stolen treasure guarded by a dragon. Several years later at the insistence of his publishers, Tolkien began work on The Lord of the Rings which, after some ten years of interrupted writing, was released in three volumes (The Fellowship of the Ring [1954], The Two Towers [1954] and The Return of the King 1955]). The Lord of the Rings recounts Frodo Baggins' perilous journey to destroy the Ring of Power created by Sauron, the Dark Lord. Throughout this period Tolkien was also working on his broader mythology, which was published posthumously as The Silmarillion in 1977. Edited by his son Christopher Tolkien, and Canadian fantasy writer Guy Gavriel Kay, The Silmarillion relates the creation of the world, and the history of the Silmarilli, three jewels composed of the lights of Valinor that are stolen by Morgoth, the first dark lord.
