PETER BUCHHOLZ Religious Foundations of Group Identity in Prehistoric Europe: The Germanic Peoples Any reader of Heimskringla ("circle of the earth"), the history of the kings of Norway by the great 13th century Icelandic writer Snorri Sturluson, will be struck by the enormous weight which the author attaches to religion. This refers both to Christianity and to pagan phenomena which preceded and even co-existed with it for some time. Snorri's work should, in my view, be ascribed a relatively high source value, if only because it is demonstrably based on older traditions either fixed in poetry or transmitted as oral prose. Öral tradition is of course not the topic of the present paper (cf. Buchholz 1980; Buchholz 1991), but the preservation of such traditions alone, many of which contain religious material, does indeed show that society or parts of it attached sufficient importance to such phenomena as to commit them to memory, parchment, runic signs or pictorial representation. The last scribe or "author" may of course have had considerable antiquarian interests, as is evident e.g. in some of the mythic poems of the Elder Edda, but such interests cannot be regarded as the cause for the existence of the myth, but only as one of the reasons for its preservation. We shall hopefully glimpse something of the role of myth in Germanic societies in the course of my paper. Leaving Myth aside for the moment, I want to stress that ÖN prose material, including Heimskringla, shows a marked interest in the concrete manifestations of cult (which, for paganism as seen through Christian eyes at least, definitely includes magic) and belief. -

Tolkien’s Quenya Or, Out of the Frying-Pan Into the Fire: Creating a Realistic Language as a Basis for Fiction Cheryl Cardoza In a letter to his son Christopher in February of 1958, Tolkien said “No one believes me when I say that my long book is an attempt to create a world in which a form of language agreeable to my personal aesthetic might seem real” (Letters 264). He added that The Lord of the Rings “was an effort to create a situation in which a common greeting would be elen síla lúmenn’ omentielmo,1 and that the phrase long antedated the book” (Letters 264-5). Tolkien often felt guilty about this, his most secret vice. Even as early as 1916, he confessed as much in a letter to Edith Bratt: “I have done some touches to my nonsense fairy language—to its improvement. I often long to work at it and don’t let myself ‘cause though I love it so, it does seem a mad hobby” (Letters 8). These four stanzas, which mark the beginning of the section Rúnatals þáttr, constitute some of the most controversial and important eddic poetry. Concerning the passage, Jens Peter Schjødt says it is one of the most interesting scenes in the entire Old Norse Corpus from the perspective of Religious History. -

Editors' Introduction Douglas A. Anderson Michael D. C. Drout Verlyn Flieger Tolkien Studies, Volume 7, 2010 Published by West Virginia University Press Editors’ Introduction This is the seventh issue of Tolkien Studies, the first refereed journal solely devoted to the scholarly study of the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. As editors, our goal is to publish excellent scholarship on Tolkien as well as to gather useful research information, reviews, notes, documents, and bibliographical material. In this issue we are especially pleased to publish Tolkien’s early fiction “The Story of Kullervo” and the two existing drafts of his talk on the Kalevala, transcribed and edited with notes and commentary by Verlyn Flieger. With this exception, all articles have been subject to anonymous, ex- ternal review as well as receiving a positive judgment by the Editors. In the cases of articles by individuals associated with the journal in any way, each article had to receive at least two positive evaluations from two different outside reviewers. Reviewer comments were anonymously conveyed to the authors of the articles. The Editors agreed to be bound by the recommendations of the outside referees. The Editors also wish to call attention to the Cumulative Index to vol- umes one through five of Tolkien Studies, compiled by Jason Rea, Michael D.C. Drout, Tara L. McGoldrick, and Lauren Provost, with Maryellen Groot and Julia Rende. The Cumulative Index is currently available only through the online subscription database Project Muse. Douglas A. Encoding of Tengwar Telcontar Version 0.08
Tengwar Telcontar This document discusses the encoding of Tengwar Telcontar version 0.08. The latest version of the font and this document can be downloaded from the Free Tengwar Font Project: http://freetengwar.sourceforge.net/. Changes from earlier proposals By creating a fully functional Unicode font for Tengwar, my intention is to promote the proposal to encode Tengwar in Unicode, and to spur the discussion on the best way to design such an encoding. What then constitutes the best way to encode Tengwar? This I can hardly decide on my own; indeed, it is of the highest importance that an encoding proposal is approved by a majority of the Tengwar user community. You are therefore cordially invited to discuss and to propose changes to Tengwar Telcontar. If you want to familiarize yourself with the Unicode standard in general, you can find much information at http://www.unicode.org/. In particular, I recommend that you read chapter 2 of The Unicode Standard, which defines many important concepts (e. g. terms like character, glyph, etc.): http://www.unicode.org/versions/Unicode5.2.0/ch02.pdf. The current encoding of the characters in Tengwar Telcontar (shown in a table at the end of this document) is based on the encoding in Michael Everson’s latest discussion paper at the Conscript Unicode Registry: http://www.evertype.com/standards/iso10646/pdf/tengwar.pdf. However, I have on more than one occasion diverged from Everson’s table, adding some characters that I felt were missing and removed others that, to my opinion, either do not merit inclusion at all, or which possibly might be better represented in other ways.
