How can they know one another, if they have forgotten or have never learned one another’s stories? If they do not know one another’s stories, how can they know whether or not to trust one another? People who do not trust one another do not help one another, and moreover they fear one another.1 Wenn eine Gemeinschaft ihr Gedächtnis verliert, kennen ihre Mitglieder einander nicht mehr.Wie könnten sie sich auch ken- nen, wenn sie die Geschichten der anderen vergessen oder nie gehört haben? Wenn sie die Geschichten der anderen nicht ken- nen, wie sollten sie dann wissen, ob sie einander trauen können oder nicht? Leute, die einander nicht trauen, helfen einander nicht, ja sie fürchten einander sogar. Lorsqu’une société perd sa mémoire, les membres qui la compo- sent deviennent étrangers les uns aux autres. Comment pour- raient-ils reconnaître leur communauté de destin, s’ils ont oublié ou jamais appris l’histoire des autres ? Et s’ils ignorent l’histoire des autres, comment se feront-ils confiance, et si la confiance fait défaut, comment pourront-ils s’entraider ? Le moment est proche où il n’auront les uns pour les autres que crainte et méfiance. Se una comunità perde la propria memoria, i suoi membri non si conoscono più tra loro.     The Sun of Words Excerpts from Aber ich lebe nur von den Zwischenräumen, an interview between Herbert Gamper and Peter Handke Wednesday April 9th to Saturday April 12th, 1986 On the morning of April 9th, 1986, it was an unusually warm day with the föhn wind blowing, and I met Peter Handke in front of the house where he was living on the Mönchsberg. He first lead me up to the tower, from where one can see down to the southern parts of Salzburg, over the plains and towards the mountains (the Untersberg and the Staufen). I asked him about the Morzger forest, whose southern extremities were visible, and about the nearby area where Loser, the protagonist of Across, lived. He asked whether these settings interested me, and this was what determined the first question I asked after we had gone down to sit at the small table by the well, in the tree-shadows, and I had taken the final, inevitable step, so that the game could begin, and switched on the tape recorder. We regretted that the singing of the chaffinches and the titmice would not be transcribed to paper; again and again it seemed to me ridiculous to pose a question in the middle of this concert. I told of a visit with Thomas Bernhard, many years ago, when, without my asking, he showed me the offices of the lawyer Moro (from the story Ungenach) in Gmunden, as well as the fallen trees infested with bark beetles at the edge of his land that had been reimagined as the General’s forest from the play Die Jagdgesellschaft.

    Federal Department of Home Affairs FDHA Swiss Federal Office of Culture FOC Swiss National Library NL Marie-Christine Doffey, May 2010 ANNUAL REPORT TO CENL 2009-2010 SNL Mission statement The Swiss National Library is responsible for collecting and making available to the public, now and in the future, Helvetica i.e. documents (in all formats, printed or digital) published in Switzerland or pro- duced elsewhere by Swiss authors or concerning Switzerland / Swiss people. 1. Mandate Since January 1st 2006, the NL has had the status of a new public management entity and is run according to a performance mandate and global budget (MPM). Within this, it retains its dual mandate: collecting documents and preserving for the future; but also making them available to the public. This is reflected in the two product groups of the NL: collections and user services. In contrast with other national libraries, part of the NL’s mandate is to allow users to borrow material for home use (with some restrictions). The goals set for 2009 were successfully achieved, and those for 2010 validated by the federal Office for Cul- ture. The accent in 2010 is on continuing the digitization of the general collections, on converting the remaining card catalogues and beginning the digitization of the iconographic collections. During 2010, the strategy 2012-2019 will be finalized. The next performance mandate period will run from 2009-2011 with the following major goals: Online access in all forms will be expanded; the remaining card catalogues will be converted into online catalogues; the backlog in digitising will be gradually reduced, while the electronic Helvetica Collection will be built up, and a general access point to all digital documents developed.

November 2004 Sekundärliteratur (zusammengestellt von Barbara Lafond, ergänzt und kommentiert von Hugo Sarbach, Schweizerisches Literaturarchiv, Bern) Zu Ludwig Hohl war an Sekundärliteratur lange nicht viel greifbar. Es erschienen in Zeitungen und Zeitschriften Rezensionen, Kritiken oder Würdigungen, zu einer tieferen Auseinandersetzung mit dem ‚Geheimtyp-Autor’ Hohl kam es nicht. Erst von den letzten zehn Lebensjahren Hohls an begann man sich literaturwissenschaftlich mit seinem Werk auseinanderzusetzen. Den Anfang machte 1969 die in Genf erscheinende „Revue de Belles- Lettres“. Einen Schritt weiter ging Johannes Beringer 1981 mit dem Suhrkamp- Materialienband Ludwig Hohl; darin kommt erstmals eine Bibliographie zu Hohl vor (54 S.).
