    Title of Collection: Ed Roche Audio Collection Reference Code: US-MoKcUMS-MSAM0005 Repository: Marr Sound Archives UMKC Miller Nichols Library 800 E. 51st Street Kansas City, MO 64110 Creator: Roche, Ed Biographical History: From 1935 until his retirement in 1991, Ed Roche recorded the sounds of Kansas City. The first engineer for Kansas City’s Municipal Auditorium, Roche installed and operated the then state of-the-art audio system. He meticulously documented music and civic events, including performances of the Kansas City Philharmonic. In 1952, Roche established Crown Recording Studio. Crown quickly became one of Kansas City’s leading studios. Over the years, Roche recorded thousands of bands, choruses and radio programs including the Kansas City Hour. Roche produced tapes for the Nazarene Church that were distributed internationally. During the 1980s, he preserved the open-reel tapes and instantaneous cut discs for the Harry Truman Presidential Library. Date Range: 1935-1967 Extent: 7 linear feet, includes 629 grooved discs and 15 open reel tapes. Scope and Content: The Ed Roche Audio Collection contains many unique items recorded in the Kansas City area, including political speeches, musical performances, religious services, and advertisements for businesses and organizations. The Kansas City Philharmonic Orchestra and the Kansas City Conservatory of Music are strongly represented with numerous recordings of each entity. Finally, the collection also holds some national radio programs, such as “The Guiding Light,” “Hymns of All Churches,” and “Michael Shayne.” University of Missouri – Kansas City Marr Sound Archives Conditions of Access: The collection is open for research and educational use.     Christianialiv Works from Norway’s Golden Age of wind music Christianialiv The Staff Band of the Norwegian Armed Forces The second half of the 19th century is often called the “Golden Age” of Norwegian music. The reason lies partly in the international reputations established by Johan Svendsen and Edvard Grieg, but it also lies in the fact that musical life in Norway, at a time of population growth and economic expansion, enjoyed a period of huge vitality and creativity, responding to a growing demand for music in every genre. The Staff Band of the Norwegian Armed Forces (to use its modern name) played a key role in this burgeoning musical life not just by performing music for all sections of society, but also by discovering and fostering musical talent in performers and composers. Johan Svendsen, Adolf Hansen, Ole Olsen and Alfred Evensen, whose music we hear on this album, can therefore be called part of the band’s history. A number of composers — Balakirev, Cui, Borodin, Rimsky-Korsakov and Mussorgsky — explored native musical and folkloric sources as the basis of a national art, and became loosely confederated into a group known as “The Mighty Handful” in Russia and “The Five” in the West. Since their works took their inspiration largely from indigenous legends and folk music, Mussorgsky considered himself lucky to receive a commission in 1861 (when he was just 21) for a dramatic musical composition based on a specifically Russian subject. On January 7th, he wrote to his mentor, Balakirev, “I have received an extremely interesting commission [for music for a drama titled The Witch by his friend Baron Georgy Fyodorovitch Mengden], which I must prepare for next summer. It is this: a whole act to take place on Bald Mountain … a Witches’ Sabbath, separate episodes of sorcerers, a solemn march for all this nastiness, a finale — the glorification of the Sabbath into which is introduced the commander of the whole festival on the Bald Mountain.     Current Review Edvard Grieg: Complete Symphonic Works Vol. III aud 92.669 EAN: 4022143926692 4022143926692 Gramophone (Mike Ashman - 2013.09.01) Aadland's Cologne Radio Grieg survey continues The first two discs in this 'Complete Symphonic Works' series (10/11, 11/11) were outstanding. This third is wholly exceptional. The presence of the overture In Autumn and the Old Norwegian Romance with Variations gives the programme a Beechamesque feel. But Aadland and his astonishingly well-integrated German ensemble – by this I mean that they are guided into a natural-sounding Nordic style – need fear nothing by way of competition, not even from the RPO's dream woodwind section. Aadland's Romance – unlike Beecham's it is complete and not marginally reorchestrated – becomes a kind of Norwegian Enigma Variations avant la lettre, mixing a large degree of symphonic seriousness with wit and Griegian nostalgia. The demonstration-class recording showcases a weight and colour of orchestration that puts this Grieg score in the correct but rarely considered position of contemporary to Strauss's early orchestral masterworks. A piece that (sssh, even on the two Beecham recordings) can sound bloated and occasional claims a place here alongside, indeed anticipates, the disguised turn-of-the-century unnamed symphonies of Rachmaninov, Elgar and the like. A similar seriousness but never overblown grandeur informs In Autumn. Aadland has already shown us in this cycle that he is good at correctly scaling miniatures both in joy and in grief. He seconds those achievements here in the characterisation of the Lyric Suite and the Sigurd Jorsalfar music, while the five minutes of Klokkeklang ('Bell-ringing') become a spooky shadow of the BØyg's music in Peer Gynt (eagerly awaited in this series).

    Disney’s Two Fantasias Music History Through Animation Background “The beauty and inspiration of music must not be restricted to a privileged few, but must be made available to every man, woman and child.” - Leopold Stokowski, 1940 “Fantasia is.. the beginning of a new technique for the screen.. and a greater development of sound recording and reproduction.” - Walt Disney, 1940 - Disney’s idea of marrying animation and music had begun in 1929 with the Silly Symphonies series (The Skeleton Dance, 1929, Flowers and Trees, 1932, first Technicolor release, The Old Mill, 1937, first multi-plane animation). Mickey was purposely left out. - by late-1930’s, Mickey’s popularity was failing, so Disney conceived the idea of starring Mickey in a Silly Symphony based on Paul Dukas’ The Sorcerer’s Apprentice - Disney ran into Stokowski in a Beverly Hills restaurant and discussed the idea with him. They soon elaborated it into a feature length film consisting of several contrasting musical works. Disney at first called it The Concert Feature. - Stokowski suggested Fantasia, a musical term meaning “a composition unrestricted by formal design, free reign for fantasy and imagination” - originally conceived as a continually changing concert program, with new pieces added and old ones withdrawn on a continuing basis.
