Book Reviews
57 BOOK REVIEWS The Plight of a Sorcerer. Georges Dumezil. Edited by Jan Puhvel and David Weeks. Berkeley, California: University of California Press, 1986 x + 120 pp. Cloth. US $25.00 JOHN COLARUSSO McMaster University Half a century ago Leonard Bloomfield embarked upon a rigorous reconstruction of Proto-Algonquian and thereby ushered in a new era in the reconstruction of the native languages of North America. This set a model for linguists in reconstructing the proto-forms of languages attested only in present day, usually unwritten form. Bloomfield built upon more than a century of careful reconstructive work within Indo-European studies, that branch of historical linguistics that studied, in Bloomfield's day, Latin, Greek, Sanskrit and other ancient languages of Europe and parts of Asia, all of which were written. The work of the French folklorist and polyglot, the late George Dumezil, is of equal significance for it puts present anthropologists into a position similar to that of Bloomfield's. Dumezil has brought the practice of reconstructing Indo-European myths and social patterns to such a stage of refinement that one can now embark upon similar efforts for virtually any corpus of myths anywhere in the world, ancient or modern. For this reason the present book is of the utmost importance for any anthropologist with even a passing interest in the mythology and history of a people. Dumezil's book, however, is for the Indo-Europeanist, both the I inguist and mythographer, and as such requires a certain amount of patience and background work on the part of the non specialist. -

Less attention is paid to the country's many millennia of culture and its splendid and rich archaeological record. And hardly a word is said about the sustained and large-scale work performed there by Swedish archaeologists. Thus we are pleased to be able to present a paper and bibliography on this underappreciated aspect of Swedish antiquarian research by professor Carl Nylander, an authority in the field and a living link to the Swedish 20th century archaeological fieldwork in Iran.
Vingtième Siècle, revue d'histoire La « nouvelle droite » entre printemps et automne (1968-1986) Anne-Marie Duranton-Crabol Abstract The « New Right » between spring and fall (1968-1986), Anne-Marie Duranton-Crabol. The Group for Research and Study on European Civilization (GRECE), founded in 1968, was at the heart of the « new right » phenomenon in France, much-discussed around 1978-1979. This ideological group operates in the area of « metapolitics », away from party affiliations, to restore to the peoples of Europe the « awareness of their destiny ». Its anti-Marxism, its anti- Americanism, its interest in biology seduced intellectuals and newspaper writers (e.g. at Figaro Magazine, for a while) and even some political advisers. At a time when the future of this « new right » seems very uncertain, here is the first history of an « intellectual pole » which was also, and often unwillingly, a pressure group. Early Indo-European Social Organization and the Indo-European Homeland
Sergey Kullanda Institute of Oriental Studies (Moscow) Early Indo-European social organization and the Indo-European homeland The homeland of a language family can be tentatively located with the aid of data on lin- guistic contacts, material culture, genetics, etc. Consequently, the current paper discusses the evidence that points to the specific traits of Proto-Indo-European social structure. It seems likely that the latter was based on age-sex stratification that had evolved into the varṇa sys- tem among the Indo-Iranians. Since age-sex stratification was particularly viable among cat- tle-breeding pastoralists, the search for the Indo-European homeland should focus on such mobile semi-sedentary cultures. Keywords: kinship terms, age-sex stratification, cattle-breeding, varṇas. It is generally agreed that the homeland of a language family can be located with the aid of data on linguistic contacts, material culture, genetics, etc. In the light of this, I seek to evaluate the evidence pointing to the specific traits of Proto-Indo-European social structure. Elsewhere, I have argued that early social organization of mankind had been based on age-sex stratification. Since I have already dwelt at length on this issue in (Кулланда 1998; Kullanda 2002), here I will confine myself to the broad outline of my arguments. Analysis of Indo-European kinship terminology implies that Proto-Indo-European society was characterized by age-sex stratification (Hocart 1928; Idem 1937; Kullanda 2002). There are about twenty PIE etyma regarded, in accordance with the meaning of the majority of their re- flexes, as kinship and relationship-by-marriage (affinal) terms. -

Dumézil, Ideology, and the Indo-Europeans
Bruce Lincoln Dumézil, Ideology, and the Indo-Europeans Abstract The author suggests that Dumézil's most important contribution was his insistence on the ideological character of myth, while other aspects of his writings are more problematic. In particular, he questions whether Dumézil's affinity for Charles Maurras and the Action Française led him to constitute diverse data as an ideal- ized »system of three functions.« Going beyond the question of Dumézil per se, and invoking the example of Procopius, Vandalic War 1.2.2-5, he treats the notion of an »Indo-European« people as a discursive construct that attempts to dissolve the diversity of historically attested evidence in an almost mythic narrative of unity and perfection in the most ancient past. I Georges Dumézil was a highly intelligent man, a meticulous and indefatigable re- searcher. He will always be associated with »the Indo-European ideology of the three functions.« The central, least specific piece of this fittingly tripartite formula strikes me as a major contribution, but the other two as misguided. Thus, let me begin by expressing my appreciation for Dumézil's stress on ideology, which led him to study myth not as a self-contained system of speculation (Lévi-Strauss) or revelation (Eliade), nor as the reflection of psychic (Jung) or natural processes (Max Müller), but in its relation to social concerns. His position has implications and value that transcend the sphere of Indo-European studies and have only begun to be appreciated. As is well known, in the 1950s Dumézil modified the way he theorized the re- lation of mythic discourse to social structure, within which latter term I would in- clude the actual (as opposed to the ideal) division of labor, the distribution of power, prestige, and material resources, and the pattern of stratification.
