The Global New Right and the Flemish Identitarian Movement Schild & Vrienden a Case Study
Paper The global New Right and the Flemish identitarian movement Schild & Vrienden A case study by Ico Maly© (Tilburg University) [email protected] December 2018 This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License. Ico Maly Abstract: This paper argues that nationalism, and nationalistic activism in particular are being globalized. At least certain fringes of radical nationalist activists are organized as ‘cellular systems’ connected and mobilize-able on a global scale giving birth to what I call ‘global nationalistic activism’. Given this change in nationalist activism, I claim that we should abandon all ‘methodological nationalism’. Methodological nationalism fails in arriving at a thorough understanding of the impact, scale and mobilization power (Tilly, 1974) of contemorary ‘national(istic)’ political activism. Even more, it inevitably will contribute to the naturalization or in emic terms the meta-political goals of global nationalist activists. The paradox is of course evident: global nationalism uses the scale- advantages, network effects and the benefits of cellular structures to fight for the (re)construction of the old 19th century vertebrate system par excellence: the (blood and soil) nation. Nevertheless, this, I will show, is an indisputable empirical reality: the many local nationalistic battles are more and more embedded in globally operating digital infrastructures mobilizing militants from all corners of the world for nationalist causes at home. Nationalist activism in the 21st century, so goes my argument, has important global dimensions which are easily repatriated for national use. -
“Fit for Consumption” – About the Social Production of the Individual
“Fit for consumption” – about the social production of the individual Henning Echberg University of Southern Denmark Published on the Internet, www.idrottsforum.org/articles/lippe/lippe080917.html (ISSN 1652–7224), 2008–09–17 Copyright © Henning Eichberg 2008. Let us, for a moment, consider Descartes’s well-known dualism, that sees man as con- sisting of two separate substances, the body and the mind. On the whole, present-day philosophers have rejected the Cartesian thesis of a division between mind and body, but the thought substantially influenced Western philosophy and religion for two and a half centuries, and the problem – left unsolved by Descartes – of finding an empirically identifiable meeting point between the two parts of the dichotomy, known as the mind– body problem, has occupied thinkers since the mid-seventeenth century. In Cartesian dualism, the body was considered of limited value, trivial, almost illusory, whereas the mind (or soul) was highly valued, enduring and efficacious – cogito ergo sum, I think, therefore I am. At the start of the twentieth century, a new awareness of the corporeal realm developed among philosophers and other thinkers, including political philosophers, ideologists and activists. And 325 years after Descartes’s death 1650, the pendulum had swung the other way, when, in the 1970s, we experienced the emergence of institutions and com- mercial establishments exclusively devoted to the development of the physical body. -
Movement, Space, and Identity in a Mexican Body Culture
societies Article From the Calendar to the Flesh: Movement, Space, and Identity in a Mexican Body Culture George Jennings Cardiff School of Sport and Health Sciences, Cardiff Metropolitan University, Cardiff CF23 6XD, UK; [email protected] Received: 20 July 2018; Accepted: 9 August 2018; Published: 13 August 2018 Abstract: There are numerous ways to theorise about elements of civilisations and societies known as ‘body’, ‘movement’, or ‘physical’ cultures. Inspired by the late Henning Eichberg’s notions of multiple and continually shifting body cultures, this article explores his constant comparative (trialectic) approach via the Mexican martial art, exercise, and human development philosophy—Xilam. Situating Xilam within its historical and political context and within a triad of Mesoamerican, native, and modern martial arts, combat sports, and other physical cultures, I map this complexity through Eichberg’s triadic model of achievement, fitness, and experience sports. I then focus my analysis on the aspects of movement in space as seen in my ethnographic fieldwork in one branch of the Xilam school. Using a bare studio as the setting and my body as principle instrument, I provide an impressionist portrait of what it is like to train in Xilam within a communal dance hall (space) and typical class session of two hours (time) and to form and express warrior identity from it. This article displays the techniques; gestures and bodily symbols that encapsulate the essence of the Xilam body culture, calling for a way to theorise from not just from and on the body but also across body cultures. Keywords: body cultures; comparative analysis; Eichberg; ethnography; games; martial arts; Mexico; physical culture; space; theory 1. -
Origines Et Métamorphoses De La Nouvelle Droite Pierre-André Taguieff
Vingtième Siècle, revue d'histoire Origines et métamorphoses de la nouvelle droite Pierre-André Taguieff Abstract Origins and metamorphoses of the French New Right, Pierre-André Taguieff. The French New Right, which grew in the 1970s and the 1980s, seems to have become an empty shell today. But the itinerary of its best theortician, Alain de Benoist, shows that this movement was able to bring up, early and continuously, the issues of roots and identity that are haunting Europe today. Though a number of different political parties submitted proposals, then-Prime Minister Jacques Chirac’s centre-right coalition led this initiative and pushed for measures that would have the effect of generally restricting eligibility for French citizenship. In particular, the government proposed to modify the process by which children born in France to immigrant parents could gain French citizenship. These reforms had come in the wake of a massive influx of immigrants in the second half of the twentieth century, many of whom came from North Africa but also elsewhere. As a new generation of young French men and women of immigrant heritage was coming of age, many in France began to raise questions about their inherent “Frenchness” and therefore place in French society and entitlement to nationality. According to proponents of the proposed amendments, by replacing the automatic right to citizenship through birth on French soil with an active process of application, these measures would ensure that only those expressing a desire to become French would receive citizenship. -

Australian Nationalist Ideological, Historical, and Legal Archive
AUSTRALIAN NATIONALIST IDEOLOGICAL, HISTORICAL, AND LEGAL ARCHIVE www.alphalink.com.au/~radnat MISSION STATEMENT (as updated, August 24 2002): This Site is a document archive linked to other Australian Nationalist political and information sites. A few Australian authors are on-line. As further works are prepared for Internet publication, additional Australian authors shall appear here. This document archive shall: (i) Ground Australian Nationalism ideologically and historically; this task is related to the legitimacy of the cause as well as the discussion of its favoured political expressions and historical place and activism; providing an accurate analysis is vital in combatting the misrepresentation of Nationalist ideology and politics by its opponents in politics and the media. (ii) Answer (when appropriate) the State-liberal-political-police propaganda which attempts to delegitimize the Nationalist organizations by an assertion that they have operated, or do operate, in a criminal manner; this task shall be addressed by relevant exposé of various "legal processes" operated against Nationalist leaders and other patriotic identities in the past. This Archive shall be continually updated and maintained as a resource for the instruction of a new generation of Nationalist leaders and activists. Texts of a general relevancy to the development of Australian Nationalist ideology and politics will also be placed upon this site. This includes material drawn from the corpus of Euro-nationalist discourse. The Editors welcome that our attention is drawn to selective material. The Editors will permit some debate around the issue of ideological and political formation and shall not censor any reasonable view on any subject which advances this objective. -
