It is said that on his deathbed h e bestowed his khirqa t o Ahmad-i Jam Zandapil , who was just abou t to be born. Ahmad-i Jam was a Persian saint who was the opposite of Ab u Sa cld i n almos t ever y respect: stern , prou d o f his mystical power, drawing people to repentance, not t o love, and ofte n usin g his spiritual strengt h for revenge and punishment. -

MEM ofcially came into existence on 15 November 1989 at its frst annual meeting, held in Toronto. It is a non-proft organization incorporated in the state of Illinois. MEM has two primary goals: to increase the representation of medieval scholarship at scholarly meetings in North America and elsewhere by co-sponsoring panels; and to foster communication among individuals and organizations with an interest in the study of the medieval Middle East. As part of its efort to promote scholarship and facilitate communication among its members, MEM publishes al-ʿUṣūr al-Wusṭā (The Journal of Middle East Medievalists). -

57 BOOK REVIEWS The Plight of a Sorcerer. Georges Dumezil. Edited by Jan Puhvel and David Weeks. Berkeley, California: University of California Press, 1986 x + 120 pp. Cloth. US $25.00 JOHN COLARUSSO McMaster University Half a century ago Leonard Bloomfield embarked upon a rigorous reconstruction of Proto-Algonquian and thereby ushered in a new era in the reconstruction of the native languages of North America. This set a model for linguists in reconstructing the proto-forms of languages attested only in present day, usually unwritten form. Bloomfield built upon more than a century of careful reconstructive work within Indo-European studies, that branch of historical linguistics that studied, in Bloomfield's day, Latin, Greek, Sanskrit and other ancient languages of Europe and parts of Asia, all of which were written. The work of the French folklorist and polyglot, the late George Dumezil, is of equal significance for it puts present anthropologists into a position similar to that of Bloomfield's. Dumezil has brought the practice of reconstructing Indo-European myths and social patterns to such a stage of refinement that one can now embark upon similar efforts for virtually any corpus of myths anywhere in the world, ancient or modern. For this reason the present book is of the utmost importance for any anthropologist with even a passing interest in the mythology and history of a people. Dumezil's book, however, is for the Indo-Europeanist, both the I inguist and mythographer, and as such requires a certain amount of patience and background work on the part of the non specialist. -

AARON MICHAEL BUTTS, YALE UNIVERSITY The two volumes under review contain editions and English translations of seven poems dating from the early seventeenth to the late twentieth century. The poems are written in what the editor terms ‘Vernacular Syriac’ (or ‘Sureth’, from Classical Syriac surāʾit ‘in Syriac’), which encompasses a variety of North-Eastern Neo- Aramaic dialects that were spoken, and occasionally written, by East-Syriac authors, whether Church of the East or Chaldean, in Northern Iraq. All of the poems belong to the dorekta genre, which is generally characterized by stanzas of 3, 4, or 6 metered, rhyming lines. The poems in the volumes expand the scope of the editor’s earlier collection of seventeenth-century dorekta poems by Israel of Alqosh and Joseph of Telkepe, which appeared in the same series.1 Each of the seven poems is presented in a critical edition in East-Syriac script (the denotation of vowels follows the manuscripts) and English translation along with an introduction. The poems are arranged in chronological order. The earliest poem in the collection, and possibly the earliest dated example of the dorekta genre extant, is On Repentance. In two of the three manuscripts, it is attributed to a certain Hormizd of Alqosh, who may tentatively be identified as the son of the well-known Israel of Alqosh. The text stands in the tradition of East-Syriac penitential hymns, and it contains numerous exempla drawn from the Old and New Testaments. -

chapter 8 Asatru – An Academic Religion? The relation between Germanic Neopaganism and academia is highly ambigu- ous. While knowledge of primary sources as well as academic theory plays a foundational role for a-racist and many ethnicist Asatruers, the majority of these Heathens have little first-hand knowledge of those sources and the Old Norse or Latin languages that they are written in. Their knowledge comes mostly from fictional literature,1 Neopagan popular interpretations, and other popular- ized accounts of Norse mythology, as well as from Internet sources.2 Asatruers who are able to cite sources and discuss academic theories about them are imbued with considerable symbolic capital within the Asatru community. Most importantly, though, references to scholarship have served to successfully repu- diate allegations of any right-wing political involvement of Asatru. This strategy of immunization against the political instrumentalization of Asatru has been fairly effective in recent years. At the same time, we cannot overlook the fact that certain strands of scholarship dealing with Old Norse mythology and cul- ture have themselves been deeply involved in various political or ideological identity projects. Germanic philology, folklore, history of religion, anthropology, and pre-historic archaeology were all concerned with the search for pure, pre- historical origins and have contributed to the mythologizing of scholarship and 1 A former board member of the Danish Forn Siðr thinks that the information he received from the popular children’s book series on Erik Menneskesøn (Erik, Son of Man) by Lars-Henrik Olsen sufficed for him to become a Godi. If these translations are introduced more and more, young researchers and seekers will be useful, as well as those who are interested in studying the mystical works, will benefit from the familiarization and study of these translations. By seeing and studying these translations, other scholars may also be able to translate Attar's works into other languages that have not been translated. And this will make the human community more familiar with the works of this mystic and expensive poet. And as a result, the costly development of Islamic culture and literature for the international community will be more and more evident. n the area of bibliography of Attar, works have been carried out so far, and books such as "Attar's Bibliography" by Ali Mir Ansari and "The Influence and Propagation of Tadzkera Al-Alawi Attar in Pakistan," and so on. But in the area of analytical work of Attar Research, especially outside of Iran, less has been studied. Hence, the authors of this article have taken a moment to reflect on this subject. By placing these studies in their context, the aim is to gain a greater understanding of the groundwork and the school of thought that was constructed by Fuat Sezgin, and to better grasp Sezgin’s approach, methodology and the goals that drove him his whole life. -

In Memoriam: Heshmat Moayyad, 1927-2018 Frank Lewis University of Chicago My friend, mentor and Doktorvater, Heshmat Moayyad passed away on Monday 25 June 2018 in Northbrook, Illinois, at the age of 90. Heshmatollah Moayyad Sanandaji began a long and full life in Hamadan, Iran, where he was born on 28 November 1927 into a Baha’i family of Jewish origins – a double minority. His father, Yaʽqub Moayyad, was a contractor with a background in Sanandaj; his mother, Masʽudeh, was a homemaker. He had two older broth- ers, Nosrat and Enayat, who went into medical practice and pharma- cy before Heshmat had finished college – as well as three younger siblings, two sisters, Parvaneh and Parvin, and a brother, Saʽid. After completing primary school in Hamadan, he went to Tehran for high school; during his third year there, the Allied powers deposed Reza Shah. Heshmat began his studies in Persian Literature at the Univer- sity of Tehran at the end of the Second World War. At the age of 21, he interrupted those studies for one full year from the winter of 1948 to 1949 in order to do community organizing among the smaller Baha’i communities in cities, towns, hamlets and districts scattered across Iran. His travelogue, a 320-page handwritten manuscript tak- Franklin D. Lewis <[email protected]> is an Associate Professor of Persian Language and Literature, and Chair of the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago.
