Comment fait-il? Je ne suis pas dans le secret de sa forge, mais un pre- mier souvenir me vient immédiatement à l’esprit. Je l’ai rencontré pour la première fois en 1971, mais ce n’est qu’en 1972 que j’ai eu un aperçu de sa méthode de travail. Dans un bureau de Valeurs actuelles, je l’ai surpris un jour en train de découper des bandelettes de papier sur lesquelles étaient écrites, à la machine à écrire, des phrases, des paragraphes, des citations, des notes, des références, tout cela rédigé en vrac, au hasard de ses recherches et de ses réflexions, en vue d’un article. -

chapter 8 Asatru – An Academic Religion? The relation between Germanic Neopaganism and academia is highly ambigu- ous. While knowledge of primary sources as well as academic theory plays a foundational role for a-racist and many ethnicist Asatruers, the majority of these Heathens have little first-hand knowledge of those sources and the Old Norse or Latin languages that they are written in. Their knowledge comes mostly from fictional literature,1 Neopagan popular interpretations, and other popular- ized accounts of Norse mythology, as well as from Internet sources.2 Asatruers who are able to cite sources and discuss academic theories about them are imbued with considerable symbolic capital within the Asatru community. Most importantly, though, references to scholarship have served to successfully repu- diate allegations of any right-wing political involvement of Asatru. This strategy of immunization against the political instrumentalization of Asatru has been fairly effective in recent years. At the same time, we cannot overlook the fact that certain strands of scholarship dealing with Old Norse mythology and cul- ture have themselves been deeply involved in various political or ideological identity projects. Germanic philology, folklore, history of religion, anthropology, and pre-historic archaeology were all concerned with the search for pure, pre- historical origins and have contributed to the mythologizing of scholarship and 1 A former board member of the Danish Forn Siðr thinks that the information he received from the popular children’s book series on Erik Menneskesøn (Erik, Son of Man) by Lars-Henrik Olsen sufficed for him to become a Godi. Pagan World 29 Pagan World 29 Year 8 Issue 1 March 21, 2006 Welcome to the 29th issue of Pagan World! After a one year hiatus, it is great to be back with my 'baby' Pagan World! A big thanks to Celeb for taking such good care of Pagan World during my one-year absence! L L A bit of history about Pagan World : This magazine began as a hard-copy only newsletter back in 1997, when Tony Kemp, who at the time was the International Coordinator of the PFI, realized that European members of the UK based Pagan Federation should have a newsletter for themselves, giving us more 'local' information than the UK oriented member magazine Pagan Dawn. So on top of all of his other PF work, in 1998 Tony published two issues of a newsletter that he called Europa . In March 1999, being buried under with writing his own books and other personal obligations, Tony Kemp handed over the editorship of Europa to me and his position as International Coordinator over to Morgana. We then immediately began to produce Europa every 3 months in both a hard-copy version (for members without an internet connection), as well as an online version. The online version served 3 important purposes: 1) it cut our costs greatly letting us use the extra cash to organize more conferences and activities 2) it allowed us to spread our Pagan wings worldwide 3) and last but not least, we killed less trees. It quickly became apparent that the online version 'worked'. Not only had the Pagan Federation branched out of the UK into Europe, but into the rest of the World. -

The Varieties of Pagan Religious Experience at Ancient Sacred Sites
64 Journal for the Study of Religious Experience ‘Gods, Wights1 and Ancestors’: The Varieties of Pagan Religious Experience at Ancient Sacred Sites Jennifer Uzzell Department of Theology and Religion, University of Durham [email protected] This article explores anomalous experiences reported by people identifying as Pagan whilst visiting places of ancient religious significance in the UK and the US. The article seeks to establish the extent to which these experiences conform to William James’ (2016, pp. 380–381) descriptors of mystical experience as ineffable, noetic, transient and passive, and suggests that while some of the experiences described do conform to the traditional categories, others describe a different sort of experience, possibly arising from a very different world view, which is neither monotheistic nor monist and as such is not concerned with concepts such as transcendence in the way that James used these terms. The article suggests that an alternative definition of ‘transcendence’ is required to accommodate these accounts. Experiences such as those described here are real and meaningful to those who have them but have, to date, been under-represented in research into religious experience. The article concludes that more research is needed into religious experiences within the context of the ‘new animism’ (Harvey, 2006). Keywords: Paganism; animism; ancient sites; religious experience; transcendence Introduction This article arose out of a wider piece of research into funerary and memorial practices among contemporary British Druids. One interesting aspect of this research concerned the construction in recent years of a number of long and round barrows, similar in outward appearance to Neolithic and Bronze Age constructions, but designed as a repository for modern cremated remains. -

Depuis quelques mois, Michel Po/ac a installé son pot de chambre à la télévision. L'émission s'appelle curieusement «Droit de réponse». Le 17 avril dernier, le roi du pipi-caca a réuni quelques autres amateurs de détritus pour faire à la nouvelle droite un procès digne de ceux de Moscou. Les inculpés n'avaient pas été convoqués, si bien que les procureurs purent déballer tranquillement leurs dossiers truqués. Quelques semaines auparavant, à Strasbourg, une conférence de Jean Haudry était annulée à la suite de manipulations subtiles et de pressions inadmissibles. Rien de nouveau : la chasse aux sorcières continue. A défaut ·de pouvoir brûler les livres qui les dérangent, les falsificateurs pratiquent le terrorisme intellectuel le plus grossier, avec la complicité du «Nouvel Observateur». La nouvelle droite n'a jamais manqué d'adversaires. Mais cette fois, elle n'est pas tombée sur les plus fins. Le stade pipi-caca de la pensée t merde ... Pour décourager les fines semaines, le samedi, sur TF-1. Le 17 avril, droite.
