Byrne This dissertation assesses the relevance and significance of Lonergan’s work to feminist philosophy.1 In particular, this work examines the debate between several contemporary feminist philosophers regarding the question of the relation between sex and gender, as well as their critiques of the Western metaphysical tradition. Ultimately, the trajectory of the work argues that Lonergan’s philosophy, in particular his re- envisioning of the meaning of what it is to do metaphysics, provides a unique and compelling response to the critiques made by feminist philosophers, despite the appearance of overt sexism in his writing. In fact, Lonergan’s approach clarifies the relevance of metaphysical thinking to feminist philosophical analysis. The first chapter examines likely feminist criticisms of Lonergan’s philosophy, as well as points of commonality, particularly between Lonergan’s cognitional theory and various feminist epistemologies. In particular, this chapter undertakes an analysis of Lonergan’s notion of “the pure desire to know” which he claims is a primordial, normative human response to our experience of the universe of being. Chapter Two focuses on the feminist debate regarding the “sex/gender” distinction. Morelli, and many others. feminist philosophers, Luce Irigaray, Elizabeth Grosz, Moira Gatens, and Judith Butler, and their critiques of the Western metaphysical tradition. Chapter Three explicates Lonergan’s cognitional theory, as well as his analysis of four patterns of experience – the biological, aesthetic, intellectual and dramatic. In addition, the notion of “neural demands” developed by Lonergan is discussed, as well as the connection between “neural demand functions” and patterns of experience. Chapter Four is dedicated to an exploration of the complexity of Lonergan’s approach to metaphysics. The chapter begins with Lonergan’s notion of being, and moves on to explore his notions of finality, emergent probability and objectivity. I turn next to a discussion of Lonergan’s revision of the traditional metaphysical vocabulary of potency, form, and act. This is followed by an examination of Lonergan’s understanding of the relationship between metaphysics and development, as well as dialectic. Chapter Five elaborates a dialectical exchange between Lonergan’s philosophy and the philosophy of Irigaray, Grosz, Butler, and Gatens. In addition, this chapter articulates Lonergan’s notion of anti-essentialism, and argues that his unmistakably clear rejection of essentialism supports the repudiation of the idea that human natures are fixed and determined by biological sex. In addition, Chapter Five explores the metaphysical and ethical significance of classical and statistical law, as well as the relationship between metaphysics and ethics as it pertains to feminist philosophy. It appears that many feminist philosophers have given up on metaphysics. Have they assumed that metaphysics is a fruitless and outmoded philosophical approach to forwarding feminist aims? If so, then their conclusions would seem justified considering that the female sex has been discounted by Western metaphysics. The contributions of the relatively few women who braved the halls of philosophical discourse prior to the twentieth century remain, for the most part, extra-canonical. Why is this? Feminists have argued persuasively that the history of the subordination of the female sex, created through the enculturation of the practice of sexism and patriarchal dominance, predates the history of Western metaphysics. In The Creation of Patriarchy, historian Gerda Lerner argues that patriarchal systems emerged over the course of several millennia. Lerner claims “The period of the ‘establishment of patriarchy’ was not one ‘event’ but a process developing over a period of nearly 2500 years, from app. 3100 to 600 B.C. It occurred, even within the Ancient Near East, at a different pace and at different times in several distinct societies.”2 Significantly, the emergence of Western philosophy and metaphysics can be traced to the period from the fourth through sixth centuries B.C., at which time Lerner claims patriarchal systems had been fully established, according to Lerner.     View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by PhilPapers Misgendering and Its Moral Contestability STEPHANIE JULIA KAPUSTA In this article, I consider the harms inflicted upon transgender persons through “misgender- ing,” that is, such deployments of gender terms that diminish transgender persons’ self- respect, limit the discursive resources at their disposal to define their own gender, and cause them microaggressive psychological harms. Such deployments are morally contestable, that is, they can be challenged on ethical or political grounds. Two characterizations of “woman” proposed in the feminist literature are critiqued from this perspective. When we consider what would happen to transgender women upon the broad implementation of these characteriza- tions within transgender women’s social context, we discover that they suffer from two defects: they either exclude at least some transgender women, or else they implicitly foster hierarchies among women, marginalizing transgender women in particular. In conclusion, I claim that the moral contestability of gender-term deployments acts as a stimulus to regularly consider the provisionality and revisability of our deployments of the term “woman.” In this article I undertake an analysis of the harmful, oppressive, and contestable practice that I call “misgendering.” The focus will be on transgender women, and I take misgendering to mean something broader than simply the use of male pronouns, or of designations associated with being male or with masculinity in referring to transgender women. Here, the notion includes the use of gender terms that exclude transgender women from the category woman,1 or that hierarchize that category in a waythatmarginalizestransgenderwomen.2 One of my main contentions is that oppressive or harmful deployments of gender terms are subject to ethically or politi- cally grounded challenges—that is, are morally contestable—irrespective of the com- petencies, epistemic or linguistic, of those who deploy them.

To that effect, I first analyze the seminal works which helped consolidate the discipline that would come to be known as “feminist phenomenology”, focusing next on relevant notions to the topic at hand, such as the concepts of lived body and facticity. In doing so, I intend to show that, even though phenomenology itself may have been charged with engendering essentialist arguments, the possibility of further non-essentialist unfolding within a phenomenological framework can contribute a great deal to the solution to a number of laborious, yet central deadlocks currently plaguing feminism as a theory as much as a political movement. RESUMO: O objetivo deste artigo é apresentar uma visão geral dos principais temas e conceitos cultivados na intersecção entre a fenomenologia e o feminismo, bem como apresentar alguns dos autores cujas pesquisas têm impactado a área. Para tanto, analiso primeiramente as obras seminais que ajudaram a consolidar a disciplina que viria a ser conhecida como “fenomenologia feminista”, focalizando a seguir noções relevantes para o tema em questão, como os conceitos de corpo vivido e facticidade.     Debating Gender Eliminativism in Feminist Metaphysics by Eloy Francisco Rodriguez LaBrada A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Department of Philosophy University of Alberta © Eloy Francisco Rodriguez LaBrada, 2017 Abstract In this thesis, I give critical consideration to gender eliminativism, or the metaphysical view that gender (in a sense to be specified) is unreal and/or the normative view that gender (in a sense to be specified) ought to be purged from our social dealings. I evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of eliminativist proposals for contemporary feminist theory and activism (with particular implications for scientific and healthcare contexts). I ask whether, and why, a certain theory of gender eliminativism and practice of gender abolitionism might ever be serviceable for feminist purposes: In which contexts might eliminativism be effective as a “regulative ideal” for our theorizing and acting (and why)? In which contexts would it be normatively important to endorse eliminativism (and about what)? In short, were we to endorse eliminativism, which kind of eliminativism should—and could—we? While I contend that the metaphysical component of eliminativism is philosophically question-begging and politically impractical, I float the idea that the normative component of eliminativism—called “abolitionism”—might be defensible as a “regulative ideal” for some feminist theorizing about gender talk (Hussein). Following what Sally Haslanger calls an “ameliorative approach,” I suggest that understanding gender eliminativism/abolitionism in terms of our “pragmatic” political objectives—rather than in terms of their conceptual or metaphysical truth—might yield a resource for feminist theorizing and activism.

Jennifer McKitrick 1 Introduction Feminist metaphysics is simultaneously feminist theorizing and meta- physics. Part of feminist metaphysics concerns social ontology and considers such questions as, What is the nature of social kinds, such as genders? Feminist metaphysicians also consider whether gendered perspectives influence metaphysical theorizing; for example, have ap- proaches to the nature of the self or free will been conducted from a masculinist perspective, and would a feminist perspective yield dif- ferent theories? Some feminist metaphysicians develop metaphysi- cal theories with the aim of furthering certain social goals, such as gender equality. Despite these and other intriguing research projects, feminist meta- physics faces challenges from two flanks: one might argue that “femi- nist metaphysics” is not metaphysics, or one might argue that it is not feminist. Recently, Elizabeth Barnes (2014) has made the case that, since contemporary accounts of the nature of metaphysics focus pri- marily on the fundamental, they have the problematic implication that feminist metaphysics is not, properly speaking, metaphysics.
