This work has evolved from my continuous discussions with her on the issues of caste and sexuality in modern South Asia. The project in many ways is inspired by her work on the bio-politics of reproduction. For my doctoral work I was awarded the Chancellor’s International Scholarship from the University of Warwick. Without this generous support, the work would not have been possible. Academic engagements in the Department of History and the Centre for the History of Medicine were crucial in developing the historical understanding necessary in building this research project. Discussions with Claudia Stein, Rebecca Earle, Hilary Marland, and Roberta Bivins helped in articulating my thoughts on the social history of medicine. A short-term fellowship from the Advanced Centre of Women’s Studies, Tata Institute of Social Science, was an encouragement while doing research in Mumbai. This work is a product of my ongoing engagements with scholars and friends working in diverse fields with a concern for historical inquiries into caste and gender formulations in India. In this process, conversations with Douglas Haynes and Milind Wakankar were important for shaping this project. I am indebted to Arvind Ganachari for encouraging me to do archival research while working on colonial Maharashtra. Discussions with Raju Jadhav were useful in my constant movement between my formulations about colonial, late colonial, and contemporary Marathi caste realities. He has also been a patient listener throughout my research experience. Similarly useful were my conversations with Sangita Thosar regarding Dalit feminism in Maharashtra. Beyond their friendship, my discussions with Vijay Kunjir and Nitish Navasagare were important in thinking and rethinking about Marathi progressivism. Conversations with Madhuri Dixit regarding Marathi theatre and translations were also useful. This doctoral thesis is mainly based on the archival research I carried out in libraries in the United Kingdom and India, particularly the Wellcome Library in London; Mumbai Marathi Grantha Sangrahalaya, Mumbai Marathi Sahitya Sangha Library, and the University of Mumbai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Library in Mumbai; and Dhanjayrao Gadgil Library and the Maharashtra iv government library in Pune. Uttamrao Patil from Tarawadi, Ahmadnagar, and Ramesh Chavan from Pune gave me access to their collections of Marathi non-Brahmin movement literature. Used-book shops, raddi wale, roadside booksellers and bookstalls selling religious books in Pune and Mumbai were important archival locations for colonial Marathi sex-education texts. Mumbai, which is almost my hometown, has always compelled me to rethink the ‘modern’ and the ‘archival’. Asmita Hulyalkar’s comments were useful while thinking about the archival material. Milind Kothawade enthusiastically and practically supported my continuous search for sources. Nilesh Kaldhonkar’s assistance was valuable in managing the material collection in Pune. Encouragement from my family was equally important in completing this PhD dissertation. A Narrative of Brahmin-Christian Conversion from Nineteenth-century Mahrashtra. New York: Oxford University Press. [ISBN 978-0-19091-405-9] Hard Copy. Pages i-xliv+222. Deepra Dandekar’s annotated translation of The Subhedar's Son, a novel published in 1895 by the Reverend Dinkar Shankar Sawarkar in Marathi as Subhedārachā Putra, is an outstanding contribution to the literature on Hindu conversion to Christianity. The book relates the story of the 1849 conversion of Sawarkar’s father, Shankar Nana (1819-1884), a Brahmin Hindu, at the Church Missionary Society (CMS) in Nasik in northern Maharashtra. The Reverend Nana was an early Brahmin convert of the CMS and served the mission and the Anglican Church for over four decades as a priest, catechist, evangelist and Marathi teacher. His conversion took place at a key historical moment, when power was being transferred from the Maratha Empire to the British administration, and the novel reveals the profound social, cultural and religious changes taking place in Maharashtra around this time. This is a story of an individual conversion but it provides insight more generally into the journey of a Brahmin to conversion, and the experiences of those who were a product of different faiths, caste, and (Marathi) identity, trying to live a Christian life. I could not help but approach this review of Dandekar’s fascinating and insightful study from a South African perspective as so much of it resonates with research being done on Hindu conversions to Christianity (of the Pentecostal variety) in South Africa.

Øyvind Bjøru, University of Texas at Austin, and Na’ama Pat-El, The Univer- sity of Texas, Austin On the Historical Syntax of the Subordination Morpheme in Assyrian Akkadian Akkadian marks subordinated verbs with a special morpheme, Babylonian -u and Assyri-an -(¯u)ni; e.g., ˇsa ir-ra-ru ‘the one he curses’ (OB, Anzu, line 22). Semitists and Assyriologists have debated the origin of these morphemes in Akkadian in general and in Assyrian in particular (e.g., Kouwenberg 2010, Hasselbach 2012). In this paper we will concentrate on the syntax and distribution of the morpheme in Assyrian, where it is morphologically complex and its syntax differs significantly from Babylonian. We will argue that this morpheme becomes generalized in this dialect, shifting from being part of the Assyrian TAM markers with restricted distribution, to acquiring a purely syntactic function which is decoupled from the verbal paradigm. In Middle Assyrian, the morpheme is attested on all verbal and deverbal predicates, with no restriction, including with verbs carrying other suffixes, such as pronominal and ventive. The most interesting development, however, is attested in Neo-Assyrian, where the morpheme is used to mark the right-most edge of the subordinated sentence, no matter what element is located there, including pronominal subjects in nominal sentences; e.g., LU´ la ´u-da a-a-´uˇsu-tu-´u-ni ‘I don’t know who this man is’ (SAA 10, 280: r1-2).

The Portuguese, Dutch, French and the English came to India to promote trade and commerce. The English who established the East-India Co. in 1600, gradually consolidated their hold in different parts of India. They had very capable men like Sir. Thomas Roe, Colonel Close, General Smith, Elphinstone, Grant Duff etc . The English shrewdly exploited the disunity among the Indian rulers. They were very diplomatic in their approach. Due to their far sighted policies, the English were able to expand and consolidate their rule in Maharashtra. 2 The Company’s government had trapped most of the Maratha rulers in Subsidiary Alliances and fought three important wars with Marathas over a period of 43 years (1775 -1818). 1.2 POLITICAL CONDITIONS BEFORE THE BRITISH CONQUEST : The Company’s Directors sent Lord Wellesley as the Governor- General of the Company’s territories in India, in 1798.

    Abhanga MeLa Sant TukA - 2003 Sant TukArAm [By Thiruvaiyaru Krishnan] Little is known of the life of TukArAm, who was born in 1608 in the village of Dehu on the banks of the river IndrayAni into a low-caste [known as Soodra] family. Since it was common in Maharashtra at that time for the Brahmins to refer to all non-Brahmins as "Soodras", it is not commonly realized that TukArAm’s family were landowners, and that they made their living by selling the produce of the land. TukArAm’s father had inherited the position of mahajan, or collector of revenue from traders, from his father, and TukArAm in turn was the mahajan of his village Dehu. At a relatively young age, owing to the death of his parents, TukArAm took charge of the family, and before he was twenty-one years old TukArAm had fathered six children. The devastating famine of 1629 carried away TukArAm’s first wife and some of his children, and TukArAm henceforth lost interest in the life of the householder. Though he did not quite forsake his family, he was unable to maintain his second wife or children, and was ultimately reduced to penury and bankruptcy, besides being stripped by the village of his position as mahajan. In the meantime, TukArAm turned to poetic compositions [abhangs], inspired by his devotion for Lord Vithoba [Vitthal], the family deity. He is said to have been visited in a dream by Namdev, a great poet-saint of the thirteenth century, and Lord Vitthal himself, and apparently was informed that it was his mission to compose abhangs.

  • The Caste Question: Dalits and the Politics of Modern India
    chapter 1 Caste Radicalism and the Making of a New Political Subject In colonial India, print capitalism facilitated the rise of multiple, dis- tinctive vernacular publics. Typically associated with urbanization and middle-class formation, this new public sphere was given material form through the consumption and circulation of print media, and character- ized by vigorous debate over social ideology and religio-cultural prac- tices. Studies examining the roots of nationalist mobilization have argued that these colonial publics politicized daily life even as they hardened cleavages along fault lines of gender, caste, and religious identity.1 In west- ern India, the Marathi-language public sphere enabled an innovative, rad- ical form of caste critique whose greatest initial success was in rural areas, where it created novel alliances between peasant protest and anticaste thought.2 The Marathi non-Brahmin public sphere was distinguished by a cri- tique of caste hegemony and the ritual and temporal power of the Brah- min. In the latter part of the nineteenth century, Jotirao Phule’s writings against Brahminism utilized forms of speech and rhetorical styles asso- ciated with the rustic language of peasants but infused them with demands for human rights and social equality that bore the influence of noncon- formist Christianity to produce a unique discourse of caste radicalism.3 Phule’s political activities, like those of the Satyashodak Samaj (Truth Seeking Society) he established in 1873, showed keen awareness of trans- formations wrought by colonial modernity, not least of which was the “new” Brahmin, a product of the colonial bureaucracy. Like his anticaste, 39 40 Emancipation non-Brahmin compatriots in the Tamil country, Phule asserted that per- manent war between Brahmin and non-Brahmin defined the historical process.
