Shivaji University, Kolhapur 53rd Annual Report Retrospection Friends, I am extremely pleased to present the 53rd Annual Report of the Shivaji University. It gives me an opportunity to present the academic progress of the university during the year 2015-16. Shivaji University is named after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the great King who shaped the epoch. This university proudly claims the intellectual legacy of Mahatma Phule, the great social reformer and pioneer of women’s education in Maharashtra, Rajarshi Shahu Mahararaj who brought social justice into reality and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution. It was the dream of Chhatrapati Rajaram Maharaj and Prin. Dr. Balkrishna to have the university in Kolhapur. The dignitaries like late Hon. Yashawantrao Chavan, Shri. Balasaheb Desai, Dr. S. R. Tawade and other eminent personalities from and around Kolhapur helped in fulfilling this dream. After the establishment of the university, the first Vice-Chancellor Hon. Dr. Appasaheb Pawar took yeoman’s efforts to establish the reputation of the university. It is my duty to remember all these great men on this occasion. I pay my sincere homage to them. Shivaji University was established primarily for the academic development of the rural youth. Today university has already acquired the esteemed position among Maharashtra State universities by obtaining ‘A’ Grade of ‘NAAC’ with 3.16 CGPA score. I would like to proudly note here the brilliant progress of the university in the last year. The Human Resource Development Ministry launched the programme ‘National Institutional Ranking Framework’ (NIRF) to accreditate the universities in India in order of merit. The university obtained the First Rank in the State and 28th rank in order of merit among 550 universities in the country. A few days ago one more result of the survey came to our hands which will enhance the eminence of the university. ‘The U.S. News and World Report’, the eminent organization in the U.S. has declared the list of ‘Best Global Universities’ in India. Shivaji University has achieved the glaring 21st position in that list. The list is declared to guide foreign students seeking admission in Indian universities which is made on the basis of the contribution of the concerned university in all subjects and its evaluation by the academic community all over the world. All the teachers, students and concerned persons in our university deserve to be congratulated for this achievement. Shivaji University, Kolhapur 53rd Annual Report Shivaji University stands 19th in the survey based on scopus statistical data regarding the research in the university. The survey was conducted by ‘Current Science’, the premier journal. Our University is 6th among the non-agricultural universities in the country and First in the State. Shivaji University is First in the country in the research activities in Material Sciences and it is the only university in the state to acquire this position. The credit for this goes to the research scholars in Physics, Nano-Science, Chemistry and to other Science subjects. Shivaji University is on the Second position in the country in online references according to the survey of the eminent 'Nature Research Journal'. This underscores the fact that our students are wiping out their rural inferiority and are becoming global. The academic territory of the university encompasses three districts namely, Kolhapur, Satara and Sangli with total number of 280 Affiliated Colleges and 13 Research Institutes. There are 39 Post Graduate Departments in the university. Around 2.5 Lakh students are given higher education at Graduate, Post Graduate and Research levels in eight different academic faculties. Along with these, there are around 40,000 students who learn while they earn through Distance
