Rupert Everett ~ 36 Screen Credits
Rupert Everett ~ 36 Screen Credits Look at that lip. Hauteur, condescension, disdain writ large. "I am a very limited actor. There's a certain amount I can do and that's it," said Everett in 2014. Maybe so, but - see My Best Friend's Wedding, An Ideal Husband, Separate Lies or Unconditional Love - how well he does it. Born in Burnham Deepdale, Norfolk on 29 May 1959 the second son of parents Anthony and Sara, RUPERT JAMES HECTOR EVERETT is of English, Scottish, Irish and more distant German and Dutch ancestry. His father, who died in 2009, was a Major in the British Army who later worked in business. When he was six, Rupert was taken into Braintree for his first trip to a cinema. There was a long queue, the child was typically fretful and the grown-ups thought about leaving, but finally decided not to: And so my mother bought the fateful tickets and unknowingly guided me through a pair of swing doors into the rest of my life ... ... Those huge curtains silently swished open and Mary Poppins sprang across the footlights and into my heart. After preliminary instruction from a governess, Everett was educated at Far- leigh House School, Andover from seven to thirteen then at Ampleforth College, Yorkshire from thirteen to sixteen, at which point he absconded to London to become an actor. After two years of living the bohemian life to the full (if not excess), he won a coveted place at the Central School of Speech and Drama, but after attending for two tempestuous and more or less unrewarding years was told not to return for a third. -

Geoffrey Brown 3 This thesis is dedicated to Agnès Calatayud, an inspirational teacher, who reconnected me to French cinema after a long carence, and who, crucially, first introduced me to the films of Claire Denis. 4 Abstract This thesis argues that the interest which the films of Claire Denis display in the ever-shifting modes of relations between people is illustrated through analysis of how music is used throughout her corpus of feature films. Denis draws on an extremely eclectic palette of musical styles, and the thesis proposes that these varying musical modalities are central to her treatment of relational issues, as are the ways in which she deploys her chosen musical selections. -

Tarkovsky's Musical Aesthetic in the Context of the Sonic Arts
ESSAY The Music of Sound Tarkovsky’s Musical Aesthetic in the Context of the Sonic Arts VOL. 110 (DECEMBER 2020) BY FLORIAN HOLLERWEGER In his book Sculpting in Time, Andrei Tarkovsky distills the essence of his perspective on cinematic sound into the following statement:1 Above all, I feel that the sounds of this world are so beautiful in themselves that if only we could learn to listen to them properly, cinema would have no need of music at all. This aesthetic is directly reflected in Tarkovsky’s oeuvre, such as in the extremely sparse use of film music in the traditional sense in his films Solaris (1972), Stalker (1979), and The Sacrifice (1986). Without additional context, Tarkovsky’s statement could therefore be understood to stand in contradiction to this special issue’s premise that music forms “an intricate component” of Russian cinema that is “weaved into” the very fabric of its films. The following account of a conversation with Tarkovsky by his musical collaborator Eduard Artemyev seems to further support such an argument.2 He [Tarkovsky] said: “[…] I do not need an ordinary film music. I cannot stand it, and I do my utmost in order to escape it …” […] In short, he told me at length and eloquently how he didn’t need film music – all these overtures, main themes, lyric songs… “Only ambience, only organisation of sounds and noises […].” These words could be interpreted as a rejection of the use of music in film altogether. In contrast to such a reading, however, I will argue that Tarkovsky’s vision of an “organisation of sounds and noises” exhibits remarkable parallels to larger developments in musical aesthetics of his time. -
