NASA celebrates first shuttle flight 7 April 2006 firing. Copyright 2006 by United Press International NASA has scheduled a series of events this month to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the nation's first space shuttle flight. On April 12, 1981, shuttle Columbia lifted off with Commander John Young and pilot Robert Crippen. Their mission, known as STS-1, is being remembered as the boldest test flight in history. STS-1 crew members addressed Kennedy Space Center workers Thursday afternoon. On the actual anniversary date, National Aeronautics and Space Administration head Michael Griffin will join Young and Crippen at Space Center Houston to honor their mission and all those who made it possible. Although the event will not be open to the public, it will be broadcast live on NASA TV. The NASA Wallops Flight Facility, at Wallops Island, Va., will unveil a shuttle sculpture April 14. Wallops provided range-safety support during the STS-1 launch and tracked the shuttle during the mission. Within less than a year after its creation, NASA began looking at follow-on programs to Project Mercury, the initial human spacefl ight effort. A Research Steering Committee on Manned Space Flight was created in spring 1959; it consisted of top-level representatives of all of the NASA fi eld centers and NASA Headquarters. Harry J. Goett from Ames, but soon to be head of the newly created Goddard Space Flight Center, was named chair of the committee. The fi rst meeting of the committee took place on 25 and 26 May 1959, in Washington. Those in attendance provided an overview of research and thinking related to human spacefl ight at various NASA centers, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), and the High Speed Flight Station (HSFS) at Edwards Air Force Base. George Low, then in charge of human spacefl ight at NASA Headquarters, argued for making a lunar landing NASA’s long-term goal. He was backed up by engineer and designer Maxime Faget of the Space Task Group of the Langley Research Center and Bruce Lundin of the Lewis Research Center. After further discussion at its June meeting, the Committee agreed on the lunar landing objective, and by the end of the year a lunar landing was incorporated into NASA’s 10-year plan as the long-range objective of the agency’s human spacefl ight program. -

Date: April 2019 ISLE OF MAN POST OFFICE PAYS TRIBUTE TO THE APOLLO MISSIONS AND THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FIRST MANNED FLIGHT TO LAND ON THE MOON THE ISLE OF MAN POST OFFICE PRESENTS LANDMARK ISSUE TO COMMEMORATE THE APOLLO PROGRAM On April 29th Isle of Man Post Office issues a set of eight stamps to commemorate the semi centennial of the first manned flight to land on the Moon. On May 5, 1961, four months after John F. Kennedy became president, Alan Shephard became the first American in space, however this was three weeks after cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human to orbit the Earth. Kennedy needed to be bold and in a speech to Congress stated “I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to Earth.” The Apollo Program was born and the “Great Adventure” began. Isle of Man Post Office proudly presents an impressive set of eight stamps covering the Apollo Missions with spectacular NASA photographs of the Moon itself as well as all the missions that led up to that ‘One Small Step’. The stamps show the beauty of space, the Moon and the vehicles that took humanity to the Moon. Through subtle references and codes on the stamps (and within NASA guidelines), the incredible NASA staff in Mission Control, the astronauts, the programs directors and those who gave their lives are included in this stunning testimony of the lunar exploration. George Abbey, who worked with NASA during the Apollo missions and was director of the Johnson Space Center during the NASA Shuttle – Mir Program, said:” The stamps are truly outstanding and I am sure they will be well received” Former NASA Astronaut Nicole Stott, wife of Manxman Chris Stott who spent a total of over 100 days in space during her two missions, said: “50 years ago this July two people stepped out onto the Moon, humanity’s first footsteps on another planetary body watched by the then largest television audience in history. -

Walking the High Ground: The Manned Orbiting Laboratory and the Age of the Air Force Astronauts by Will Holsclaw Department of History Defense Date: April 9, 2018 Thesis Advisor: Andrew DeRoche, Department of History Thesis Committee: Matthew Gerber, Department of History Allison Anderson, Department of Aerospace Engineering 2 i Abstract This thesis is an examination of the U.S. Air Force’s cancelled – and heretofore substantially classified – Manned Orbiting Laboratory (MOL) space program of the 1960s, situating it in the broader context of military and civilian space policy from the dawn of the Space Age in the 1950s to the aftermath of the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster. Several hundred documents related to the MOL have recently been declassified by the National Reconnaissance Office, and these permit historians a better understanding of the origins of the program and its impact. By studying this new windfall of primary source material and linking it with more familiar and visible episodes of space history, this thesis aims to reevaluate not only the MOL program itself but the dynamic relationship between America’s purportedly bifurcated civilian and military space programs. Many actors in Cold War space policy, some well-known and some less well- known, participated in the secretive program and used it as a tool for intertwining the interests of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) with the Air Force and reshaping national space policy. Their actions would lead, for a time, to an unprecedented militarization of NASA by the Department of Defense which would prove to be to the benefit of neither party. -

Of note, the Spaceport News header, went through some 10 different logo schemes, from 1963 through 1995. The longest running logo is below, which ran from the first issue, on December 13, 1962, until June 12, 1975. From The January 7, 1983, Spaceport News The following photo is on the first page. The caption reads “TECHNICIANS TRANSFER the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite and its Inertial Upper Stage, the primary cargo for STS-6, into the transport canister. The canister and cargo were moved to Launch Pad 39A Dec. 27. There the cargo has been undergoing checkout in the Payload Changeout Room. I believe the photo is taken in the Vertical Processing Facility and it was the first vertical payload processed for Shuttle there. Page 1 This article is on page 2, “Astronaut Physicians Added to Flight Crews”. In part, the article reads “Dr. Norman Thagard and Dr. William Thornton have been named as the fifth crew members scheduled to be aboard Space Shuttle missions STS-7 and STS-8, respectively. Thagard and Thornton, both physicians, have been added to assist in accomplishment of additional mission objectives.
