September-October 2019
First Edition - September-October 2019 U14 Football LSS 1-2 Ashlawn: After a tense first 15 minutes, with no clear cut chances going either way, Jake Thornton was brought down just inside the box. With the referee awarding a penalty almost instantly, Uzair Mirza stepped up and buried it into the bottom left hand corner, putting Sheriff 1-0 up. However, after just 5 minutes, an error by the defence allowed the Ashlawn striker to square it across the box for a simple tap-in, making it 1-1. The first half was concluded by a series of brilliant saves by Marcus Bald. Not a lot of action happened in the second half. Although there was a period when some high-quality saves occurred from each side. The last ten minutes were tense, but the winner was finally scored with less than 2 minutes to go, from an Ashlawn cross which resulted in our centre back being beaten in the air, the ball just escaping Marcus’ reach. A good game of football, resulting in a 2-1 win for the visitors. Review of 2009/10 – Part 3 – Cup Highs and League Lows
Review of 2009/10 – Part 3 – Cup highs and League lows After six years of decline, 2010 promised to be the turning point for Leeds United: on 1 January they led the League One table, eleven points clear of the third- placed club. They would never have a better opportunity of getting out of the third tier of English football. To add to the excitement they pulled off a memorable victory over Manchester United in the FA Cup at Old Trafford on 3 January. They won a passionate encounter by virtue of Jermaine Beckford‟s 19th-minute goal and a magnificent all round team display. Simon Grayson claimed it as a “fantastic day for this football club”, echoing the feelings of United fans everywhere as Leeds ended a 29-year drought at the Jermaine Beckford coolly beats Manchester United‟s Kuszczak and Brown to Theatre of Dreams. give Leeds a famous victory Strangely, however, the triumph triggered a loss of form in the League. Many laid the blame at the feet of Beckford‟s agent as he tried to secure a move to the Premiership. There were ongoing rumours of a big money bid in the transfer window. Beckford‟s existing contract was due to end in the summer when he would be available on a free transfer. This was the final opportunity for Leeds to cash in on him. Newcastle tabled a £1.25m bid, later increased to £1.5m and then £1.8m. Leeds insisted they would wait for a “ridiculous” offer, rumoured to be nothing less than £2m.
