Vincent Kompany’s late appearance as a substitute against Everton last weekend marked a notable milestone in the captain’s City career. It was the Belgian’s 300th appearance for the Blues in this, his eight season with the club.

With on with Torino, that makes Kompany City’s longest serving player with – another member of the 300 Club – arriving just a few days later. Since signing for what now seems like a bargain £8m from Hamburg, Kompany has become the Blues’ most successful captain, inspiring his teammates as he leads by example every time he steps out onto the pitch. So here’s to you, , as we pay tribute to the man who knows nothing less than total commitment whether it’s wearing the sky blue of City, or the red shirt of Belgium…

August 2008: Vincent joins City He said: “The chance came at the right moment – this is a club with a lot of ambition. That helped me make my decision and I am looking forward to playing in the Premier League. I just had a good feeling about this move. When you feel they are dynamic people at City, who know a lot about football, you realise you are in a good environment to improve your game.”

OFFICIAL MATCHDAY PROGRAMME August 2008: Debut v West Ham Kompany makes a solid debut – in midfi eld – as City beat the Hammers 3-0 at the Etihad. picks up two quick yellow cards in the fi rst half and is dismissed and the Blues bag three goals in 10 second-half minutes.

September 2008: First goal Vincent bags his fi rst goal for City with a close- range volley away to Wigan Athletic – but it is ultimately in vain as the Blues lose 2-1 at what was then called the JJB Stadium…

August 2010: The number 4 shirt Nedum Onuoha’s loan to Sunderland allows Kompany to claim his favoured number 4 shirt. When captain doesn’t play, Vincent leads the side – as he had on occasion the previous season.

9 May 2011: Champions League qualifi cation City’s 1-0 win over Tottenham (courtesy of a own goal) guarantees Champions League football for City for the fi rst time. Just 12 months before, Spurs had beaten City 1-0 at the Etihad to deny the Blues a top-four spot – revenge is sweet!

May 2011: First trophy City end a 35-year wait for silverware as Yaya Toure’s late goal gives the Blues a 1-0 win over Stoke City at Wembley. It’s Vincent’s fi rst winner’s medal with the Blues but it won’t be the last. He is also voted into the PFA Team of the Year for the fi rst time after what manager describes as an “incredible season”.

OFFICIAL MATCHDAY PROGRAMME May 2011: MCFC Player of the Year Despite some fi erce competition, Kompany is voted MCFC Player of the Year after yet another excellent campaign in an FA Cup-winning season.

April 2012: Derby winner Needing a win to put the Blues fi rmly in the driving seat for the title, Kompany’s towering header before half-time against Manchester United seals a crucial 1-0 derby win and leaves City just two wins away from the title.

11 May 2012: Champions! In his fi rst season as City skipper, Kompany leads the squad to the Premier League title – ending a 44-year wait for the Blues who had last tasted top-fl ight title success in 1968. The images of Vincent lifting the trophy at the Etihad will live long in the memories of all City fans who witnessed it. The City captain is again voted into the PFA Team of the Year and pens a new six- year contract with the club.

May 2013: PFA Team of the Year Vinnie is voted by his fellow professionals into the best XI of the season, though the Blues end 2012/13 empty-handed after fi nishing runners-up to Manchester United.

March 2014: Capital One Cup winners Vinnie collects his third winner’s medal, and lifts the Capital One Cup following a 3-1 win over Sunderland at Wembley. Spectacular goals from Yaya Toure, and a late third from Jesus Navas complete the victory.

May 2014: A second title An ecstatic Kompany scores the second goal in a 2-0 title-clinching victory over West Ham United on the fi nal day of the 2013/14 season. The captain lifts the trophy aloft for the second time in three years as the silverware continues to arrive at the Etihad.

Leading through Fernandinho’s 48th-minute goal, levelled late on to force a shoot-out that City won 3-1. Kompany’s towering display earns him the Man of the Match award despite it being only his third start in four months.

A fi nal word from the skipper… “Our fans, the people of Manchester, know that our club has an unbelievably rich history. For me, football isn’t just about celebrating success. It is about handling disappointments as well – and I don’t think there are many clubs out there who have had such a varied past.

“That’s why I love City and why I love being the captain. I don’t need other people to tell me what Manchester City means because I feel a part of it.” Vincent Kompany, February 2016

Every year it’s the club photographer’s responsibility to capture the players in the new season’s kit. These shoots are extremely busy and demanding – but a lot of fun. The players are asked to perform different poses during the shoot, some very serious poses mixed with happy, smiling faces. There are lots of different stations that the players must go to for these stylised images. You can see from this image that Sergio was performing one of his celebrations and I caught him midway through his jump. Sometimes the shots from behind the scenes can be the most interesting. Documenting shoots from a “fl y on the wall” perspective is always brilliant for capturing real emotion – plus you get an insight into the character and personality behind the player.

It’s only a week or so since we were last all here It’s also a privilege to be part of a club that at the Etihad Stadium for the one-sided 1-1 draw recognises and embraces its history and with Everton so I want to talk a little bit about off- former players and still, without fuss or fanfare, the-pitch stuff before I delve into the action both continues to play a major part in all the local gone and to come. communities. Which takes me nicely on to the second part of today’s notes – City in the First of all, this week the club issued its annual Community. report. It is not a document that has traditionally caught the eye of the average fan but in these days of 24-hour media and all the social David Silva – magnificent comment that comes with Twitter and Facebook against Everton. it has become much more of a talking point.

City’s annual report is visually stunning and very easy to understand. Of course the newspapers that are obsessed with money immediately look at how much profit we made, how much we spent on wages and how much we forked out in transfer fees. But below all that stuff is a story that needs shouting about and in my opinion means we have the best owner in football in Sheikh Mansour, the best chairman in Khaldoon Al Mubarak and the best people working here.

Eight years ago virtually every non-City fan was spouting about how the owners were not at City for the long haul; how they would get bored; and pondering what would happen when it all ended. And yet here we are less than a decade later with an expanded stadium, training facilities that are the envy of the world of football, Pep Guardiola as manager, some of the best players in the world playing the best football, two league titles and three domestic trophies, sister clubs, and an Academy that will provide top-class talent for years to come – all achieved within a sustainable business model while making a profit. Not bad, eh?

OFFICIAL MATCHDAY PROGRAMME They celebrate their 30th birthday this year and Hopefully today will be the day when we return to remain a tip-top organisation of which we can the high-scoring habit we had in the early games all be justifiably proud. So to the football! Due to deadlines I had to write these notes ahead of the game in Barcelona so hopefully we will have added to our tally of four UEFA Champions League points.

Against Everton I thought we were excellent without getting the reward for our efforts. We controlled the game and the tempo and I am sure Pep was pleased with the performance if not the single point.

I thought David Silva was magnificent. He continues to consistently show the form he displayed when at his best during title winning seasons. For me he is still the best in his position in the Premier League and has much to offer. He looks like he’s fit and hungry again. That augurs well for us and spells danger for defences across Europe.
