I would like to add my personal congratulations” 7 SKIPPER JOINS THE 300 CLUB Saluting the skipper’s latest milestone… WORDS: DAVID CLAYTON PICTURES: VICTORIA HAYDN/PA Vincent Kompany’s late appearance as a substitute against Everton last weekend marked a notable milestone in the captain’s City career. It was the Belgian’s 300th appearance for the Blues in this, his eight season with the club. With Joe Hart on loan with Torino, that makes Kompany City’s longest serving player with Pablo Zabaleta – another member of the 300 Club – arriving just a few days later. Since signing for what now seems like a bargain £8m from Hamburg, Kompany has become the Blues’ most successful captain, inspiring his teammates as he leads by example every time he steps out onto the pitch. So here’s to you, Vincent Kompany, as we pay tribute to the man who knows nothing less than total commitment whether it’s wearing the sky blue of City, or the red shirt of Belgium… August 2008: Vincent joins City He said: “The chance came at the right moment – this is a club with a lot of ambition. That helped me make my decision and I am looking forward to playing in the Premier League. I just had a good feeling about this move. When you feel they are dynamic people at City, who know a lot about football, you realise you are in a good environment to improve your game.” OFFICIAL MATCHDAY PROGRAMME August 2008: Debut v West Ham United Kompany makes a solid debut – in midfi eld – as City beat the Hammers 3-0 at the Etihad. Mark Noble picks up two quick yellow cards in the fi rst half and is dismissed and the Blues bag three goals in 10 second-half minutes. September 2008: First goal Vincent bags his fi rst goal for City with a close- range volley away to Wigan Athletic – but it is ultimately in vain as the Blues lose 2-1 at what was then called the JJB Stadium… August 2010: The number 4 shirt Nedum Onuoha’s loan to Sunderland allows Kompany to claim his favoured number 4 shirt. When captain Carlos Tevez doesn’t play, Vincent leads the side – as he had on occasion the previous season. 9 May 2011: Champions League qualifi cation City’s 1-0 win over Tottenham (courtesy of a Peter Crouch own goal) guarantees Champions League football for City for the fi rst time. Just 12 months before, Spurs had beaten City 1-0 at the Etihad to deny the Blues a top-four spot – revenge is sweet! May 2011: First trophy City end a 35-year wait for silverware as Yaya Toure’s late goal gives the Blues a 1-0 win over Stoke City at Wembley. It’s Vincent’s fi rst winner’s medal with the Blues but it won’t be the last. He is also voted into the PFA Team of the Year for the fi rst time after what manager Roberto Mancini describes as an “incredible season”. OFFICIAL MATCHDAY PROGRAMME May 2011: MCFC Player of the Year Despite some fi erce competition, Kompany is voted MCFC Player of the Year after yet another excellent campaign in an FA Cup-winning season. April 2012: Derby winner Needing a win to put the Blues fi rmly in the driving seat for the title, Kompany’s towering header before half-time against Manchester United seals a crucial 1-0 derby win and leaves City just two wins away from the title. 11 May 2012: Champions! In his fi rst season as City skipper, Kompany leads the squad to the Premier League title – ending a 44-year wait for the Blues who had last tasted top-fl ight title success in 1968. The images of Vincent lifting the trophy at the Etihad will live long in the memories of all City fans who witnessed it. The City captain is again voted into the PFA Team of the Year and pens a new six- year contract with the club. May 2013: PFA Team of the Year Vinnie is voted by his fellow professionals into the best XI of the season, though the Blues end 2012/13 empty-handed after fi nishing runners-up to Manchester United. March 2014: Capital One Cup winners Vinnie collects his third winner’s medal, and lifts the Capital One Cup following a 3-1 win over Sunderland at Wembley. Spectacular goals from Yaya Toure, Samir Nasri and a late third from Jesus Navas complete the victory. May 2014: A second title An ecstatic Kompany scores the second goal in a 2-0 title-clinching victory over West Ham United on the fi nal day of the 2013/14 season. The captain lifts the trophy aloft for the second time in three years as the silverware continues to arrive at the Etihad.
