It wit- nessed a terrible terrorist attack against innocents Tfrom about 24 countries in a popular touristic area. The deadly attack began in the early evening with a van plowing through crowds on the renowned Las Ramblas avenue, a popular tourist section of Barcelona, leaving 13 dead and more than 100 injured. Spain’s prime minister called it an act of “jihadi ter- rorism”. The suspects are from Morocco, and one from the Spanish enclave of Melilla. IS claimed they were “soldiers of the Islamic State”. Security officials believe the attacks were a work of a terror cell. Leaders from all over the world offered their condolences and expressed their support for Spain. The question will remain - are these killings the last? This summer was a dark season for several European capitals, which in my opinion is a dangerous indicator for the safety and security of Europe and should be taken into account. The previous terrorist attack on Europe was in Paris on Aug 9, after a car deliberately rammed into a group of soldiers, wounding six. Britain saw the largest share of attacks with three incidents that killed dozens and injured hundreds in Manchester, London and Westminster. All these attacks should not pass without consideration by the European Union, the police and security channels. Some press reports previously spoke about IS mem- bers after their possible return to their homelands after their defeat in the Middle East. After IS’ defeat in Iraq and Syria, it is natural that militants will try to return to their countries or continue their criminal activities in the space available to them with their followers and supporters. The Spain attackers were not tourists, but citizens, and regardless of the origin and roots of these KUWAIT: Photo captured at sunrise at Kuwait’s Souq Sharq pier. — KUNA criminals, they were holders of European passports. PHENOMENAL BODIES, PHENOMENAL GIRLS: HOW YOUNG ADOLESCENT GIRLS EXPERIENCE BEING ENOUGH IN THEIR BODIES by HILARY ELIZABETH HUGHES (Under the Direction of Mark D. Vagle) ABSTRACT Drawing on philosophers (Ahmed, 2006; Fanon, 1986; Heidegger, 1927, 1962, 1992; Merleau-Ponty, 1962) and social science scholars (Dahlberg, Dahlberg, & Nystrom, 2008; Vagle, 2009, 2010, 2011; van Manen, 1990, 2000) for this phenomenological study, I asked what it was like for the seventh grade girls who participated with me in a year-long writing group to experience moments where they found themselves in bodily-not-enoughness: moments when someone or something was telling them they were not enough of something in their bodies. Using a multigenre magazine format for the dissertation, I describe how I learned—as an adult, a qualitative researcher, a middle grades teacher, and a teacher educator—from these seventh grade girls how to be-enough in my own body, by illustrating various moments when some of the girls seemed to talk-back-TO those societal messages telling them they were not pretty- enough, thin-enough, English-speaking-enough, white-enough, popular-enough, or smart-enough by embodying some kind of resistance-to those messages. I then suggest that if we as adults, qualitative researchers, middle grades educators, and teacher educators wish to try and understand better how female young adolescents of color experience living in their bodies, we should begin listening differently so that we can begin seeing/knowing/thinking the bodies of young adolescents,

  • Cthulhu Lives!: a Descriptive Study of the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society
CTHULHU LIVES!: A DESCRIPTIVE STUDY OF THE H.P. LOVECRAFT HISTORICAL SOCIETY J. Michael Bestul A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2006 Committee: Dr. Jane Barnette, Advisor Prof. Bradford Clark Dr. Marilyn Motz ii ABSTRACT Dr. Jane Barnette, Advisor Outside of the boom in video game studies, the realm of gaming has barely been scratched by academics and rarely been explored in a scholarly fashion. Despite the rich vein of possibilities for study that tabletop and live-action role-playing games present, few scholars have dug deeply. The goal of this study is to start digging. Operating at the crossroads of art and entertainment, theatre and gaming, work and play, it seeks to add the live-action role-playing game, CTHULHU LIVES, to the discussion of performance studies. As an introduction, this study seeks to describe exactly what CTHULHU LIVES was and has become, and how its existence brought about the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society. Simply as a gaming group which grew into a creative organization that produces artifacts in multiple mediums, the Society is worthy of scholarship. Add its humble beginnings, casual style and non-corporate affiliation, and its recent turn to self- sustainability, and the Society becomes even more interesting. In interviews with the artists behind CTHULHU LIVES, and poring through the archives of their gaming experiences, the picture develops of the journey from a small group of friends to an organization with influences and products on an international scale.
