We are optimistic that we have turned the corner after the turbulence of last season and that the forthcoming campaign will be an exciting one. The backing of our fans last year was magnificent considering what a difficult season it was on and off the pitch and we hope to reward that loyalty with improved performances and an exciting brand of football. Tooting & Mitcham are one of the legends of the non-league scene and narrowly missed the play-offs last season so this promises to be a tough game and a good gauge of how far we can go this season. A warm welcome to everybody for the first game of the 2019/20 season against our Bet Victor counterparts, Tooting and Mitcham FC. May I also express a warm welcome to everybody connected to today’s opponents, Tooting and Mitcham FC. Having been appointed manager in the middle of May, it seems an eternity that we’ve actually got to the first game of the season! I would like to place on record, my sincere gratitude and pride of being appointed the manager of Hertford Town FC. Throughout my professional playing career I always prided myself on giving 100% every single game for the clubs that I played for. Now as player-manager, you can expect the same, from not only myself but also the whole team. In my experience, what fans would like to see is, full commitment, hard work, dedication and a never-say-die attitude when they represent their team. We are all fans at heart, none more so than myself, and realise it is a great honour to represent a football club and its fans, knowing the least you can give is the maximum effort. I have followed Hertford Town FC quite closely in the last few years, and have seen the high turnover of both players and more recently, managers. With the team that I’ve assembled, we will hopefully bring continuity, which in turn will see better results for the club on and off the pitch. Today is possibly the most excited I’ve been to start a season. With so much change at the club over the summer; with a whole new committee coming on board, and obviously a whole new team, it marks the dawn of a new era. The vision going forward is to produce young, hungry players that want to kick on in the world of professional football, whilst producing entertaining, attacking, winning football. We want to become synonymous with quality and the place that harbours and nurtures young talented players, and hopefully push them on their path up the football pyramid, whilst progressing the club up the leagues. I hope to give you a team you will be proud of. The players and I would really appreciate and benefit from your notorious vocal support, especially at The Stable End; we have a lot of young players and I know that you will get fully behind all of them. I would also like to reflect and take this opportunity to thank the new committee that has also embarked on this vision with us. Throughout the summer, the hours spent trying to improve the club in every aspect has been monumental and without their help, we wouldn’t be at the stage we’re at now. I hope you enjoy today’s game, and your continued support is very much appreciated. Ben Today’s opponents. A BRIEF HISTORY OF TOOTING & MITCHAM UNITED F.C. Tooting & Mitcham United FC was formed in 1932 when two local sides, Tooting Town and Mitcham Wanderers amalgamated, the club remaining in the London League until joining the Athenian League in 1937. In 1938 the Surrey Senior Cup was won for the first time by beating Dulwich Hamlet 2-1. Wartime then brought a mixture of friendly matches and a league called the South East Combination. The London Senior Cup was lifted in 1943 when Dulwich Hamlet were defeated 5-4. When the Second World War ended the club returned to the Athenian League and were Champions in 1950 and 1955. They also reached the FA Cup First Round Proper for the first time in 1948 unluckily losing by a goal to nil at Millwall and in 1950 reached the First Round Proper again with their first ever home tie against Football League opposition Brighton & Hove Albion, losing 3-2. The club was invited to join the Isthmian League in 1956, the premier amateur league in the South, and they switched from playing in white shirts to black and white stripes. That season saw the club reach the FA Cup Second Round Proper losing to Queens Park Rangers. In the 1957-58 season they were crowned Isthmian League Champions but were hit by tragedy when star goalkeeper Dave Moore was killed in a car crash soon after the title was won. In season 1958-59 the club reached the 3rd round proper of the FA Cup for the first time in its history beating Football League clubs Bournemouth and Northampton Town. In the third round they were drawn at home to Nottingham Forest, one of the top clubs in the country, and led the First Division side 2-0 at half-time but a own goal and a very controversial penalty for handball enabled Forest to scramble a draw. In the replay the Midlands side won 3-0 played before a crowd of 42,362 and they went on to lift the FA Cup at Wembley. The 1959-60 campaign was one of the best in the club’s history the Isthmian League Championship was won for the second time and Tooting reached four Cup Finals, winning two. The London Senior Cup was lifted as Bromley were beaten 5-0 and the Surrey Senior Cup was also won when Tooting defeated Walton & Hersham 3-0, great striker and Northern Ireland International Paddy Hasty getting a hat-trick. Paddy would also play for the Great Britain Olympic team in the 1960 summer Olympics and was the last player to score a goal for Team GB until 2012. Tooting were the first amateur side to reach the London Challenge Cup Final for over 30 years losing 2-1 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. In March 1962 the club switched on their brand new floodlights and how bright they were, the game against Arsenal was a classic as the Gunners were beaten 4-2 in a never to be forgotten evening. The following season the team had a record 11-0 win over Welton Rovers in the Amateur Cup, the Tooting & Mitcham side containing several England Amateur Internationals. Young goalkeeper Alex Stepney was a local lad who had come through the Tooting ranks and at the end of the 1962-63 campaign he joined Millwall and later played for Chelsea, Manchester United and the full England side against Sweden, a proud moment for Tooting & Mitcham.
