09 “The stadiums, fans and atmosphere – everything is different but I’m enjoying it. There might be clubs in this league that are perceived to be bigger than others, and some with more history than others, but the level of play is similar from game to game and there are no ‘easy wins’.

“Watford will be just as diffi cult. They are challenging for a place in the top half of the table and have proved they are a very good side and have had a number of good results away from home, so we have to be at our best.”

City have struggled recently at home with just one win in six matches at the Etihad. The most damaging game in that run was potentially the 3-1 loss to Chelsea in the last Premier League home game – all the more frustrating given that the Blues were in control and ahead for an hour of a match that had arguably been one of the best performances of the season.

Three counter-attack goals produced a slightly skewed scoreline, but a stark reminder of how cruel the Premier League can be if you don’t take your chances. Bravo says that although the Chelsea defeat hurt, once any fi nal whistle has blown the focus has to immediately turn to the next game.

“I think the mood doesn’t change whether we win, draw or lose. We are very clear that our job is to keep working hard, keep focusing and play the best games we can so we can get the points we need to achieve our targets.

“There’s still a long road ahead of us and no matter what happens, we won’t become desperate or worried because that is counter- productive. It is a very long season and so much can happen. I think the team that is more patient, more hard-working and more consistent, will be the one who will achieve their goals. That’s the line we must follow and one that we will follow.”

Bravo knew that taking over as City’s number 1 would also be a huge challenge. Taking the place of such a popular keeper as was never going to be easy, but the Chilean is grateful of the support he’s had from the City fans as he and his family settle into their new life. He is desperate to

That left one from five: Monaco (which was the hope of many of our fans for its scenic beauty and art deco stadium); Juventus (who we have encountered in both the UCL and the Europa League in the last five years); (who we played in the 2012 group stages); Napoli (who we also met recently in the 2011 edition; our first in the re-branded European Cup); and Atletico (who we’ve yet to come across in competitive action). In the end it was Monaco who came out of the UEFA bowl with us and I for one can’t wait.

“With more clinical finishing, a little more luck or a refereeing decision go our way here or there we could have had 12 points from the last four home games instead of three” 21 SEQUENCES & LINKS GARY JAMES ON CITY’S RECORD SEQUENCES AND LINKS. TONIGHT: MOST LEAGUE GOALS IN A SEASON.

Today I take a look at City’s record of league goals scored in a single season, focusing on the establishment of our top-fl ight record. Then I consider the all-time highest goals record in a season.

Top-fl ight record

The highest City goals tally in the Premier League stands at 102 scored in our title-winning season of 2013/14, eclipsing our 2011/12 total of 93, our previous best for the Premier League. However, there have been two other top-fl ight seasons that have exceeded our Premier League best and Peter Doherty Joe Hayes they were the 1936/37 league-winning season and 1957/58 – an incredible campaign when City scored over a hundred Neil Young and conceded 100! Fanzine editor Dave Wallace wrote an interesting book on that season, Century City, which spells out game by game how the campaign unfolded. The top 10 highest goals per season record for the Premier League and its pre-1992 equivalent (the original First Division) are: Total Season Games Goals/game Top league scorer 107 1936/37 42 2.548 Peter Doherty (30) 104 1957/58 42 2.476 Joe Hayes (25) 102 2013/14 38 2.684 Sergio Aguero (17) 95 1928/29 42 2.261 Tommy Johnson (38) Sergio Aguero’s 26 league goals 91 1929/30 42 2.167 Tommy Tait (27) in 2014/15 earned him the 93 2011/12 38 2.447 Sergio Aguero (23) Premier League’s 89* 1925/26 42 2.119 Tommy Browell and Golden Boot. Title winning seasons in blue *Despite scoring so many, City were relegated at the end of the 1925/26 season.

OFFICIAL MATCHDAY PROGRAMME Most goals in a season – a chronological record While the top-fl ight record is the one that gets national focus, it is appropriate we also recognise City’s all-time, all-division goalscoring record. The following shows its progression since the club joined the Football League as Ardwick in 1892.

Total Season Games Goals/game Top league scorer 45 1892/93 22 2.045 David Weir (8) 47 1893/94 28 1.679 Hugh Morris (7) 82 1894/95 30 2.733 Pat Finnerhan (14) 92 1898/99 34 2.706 (29) 95 1902/03 34 2.794 Billy Gillespie (28) 108 1926/27 42 2.571 Tommy Johnson (25) Billy Gillespie 108 2001/02 46 2.348 Shaun Goater (28)

Divisional title-winning seasons highlighted in blue.

The 1926/27 season Immediately following relegation in 1926 it was diffi cult for City supporters to look forward to the future. The General Strike hardly helped. It started two days after City’s fi nal game, and caused much tension, friction, and hardship throughout the country. Despite the gloom, the Blues scored plenty of goals, with 35 coming in their fi rst 13 matches. They were also well supported and continued to attract signifi cantly bigger crowds than First Division Manchester United. City notched several high scores and were impressing, but so too were Portsmouth. On the fi nal day of the season both sides were level on 52 points, while Middlesbrough were already certain of the title. Importantly, Portsmouth had the better goal average (82 for and 48 against, with an average of 1.708 as opposed to City’s 100 for, 61 against at an average of 1.639). Back then goal average would be used to settle issues instead of goal difference. What followed was a highly dramatic day. The Blues beat Bradford 8-0 but Portsmouth’s game kicked off 15 minutes late. At City’s fi nal whistle supporters surged onto the pitch to celebrate. The band started playing “Auld Lang Syne” and everyone believed City’s high score was enough, but 10 minutes later the City directors were informed via ticker-tape that Portsmouth had been promoted by the narrowest goal average margin in history. Their average equalled 1.7755, while City’s was 1.7705. Another goal would have brought promotion, but the record was set at 108 goals.

Tommy Johnson scored 25 of City’s 108 league goals in 1926/27.

23 The 2001/02 season That season Shaun Goater netted 28 goals (in 42 appearances), while other scoring heroes included – 20 goals (30 plus 10 subs) – and – 12 goals (14 plus 1 sub). Another scoring star was Shaun Wright-Phillips who scored 8 (31 plus 4 subs), including his fi rst league goal, which came in the 3-2 victory at Millwall when away fans were excluded due to previous issues with Millwall’s fans (City and Millwall agreed not to sell tickets to supporters of the visiting clubs at either game). Approximately 5,000 City fans watched the game on a screen at . That winner at Millwall was our 50th goal of the season and, as many Blues will remember, City came close to surpassing their 108 goals record when a penalty was awarded in the last minute of the fi nal, celebratory game of the campaign against Portsmouth. Captain , playing his last competitive match, and on a Shaun Wright-Phillips career tally of 99 goals, stepped up celebrating his fi rst to take the spot-kick and proceeded goal, at Millwall. to blast the ball over the bar. Afterwards the player laughed: “There is always a sting in the tail when Stuart Pearce does anything, and that penalty was comical. I have been psyched out by ! The way I missed the goal just about sums me up, but it has been a pleasure and honour to represent the clubs I have, and I am very proud to have won this Championship medal with City.”
