2021 GSOH Council VRG.Pdf 2020-2021 1 Sept. 1, 2020 I’m excited to welcome you as a volunteer for the Girl Scouts of Ohio’s Heartland Council. You have embarked on the wonderful adventure of helping build girls of courage, confidence and character. We couldn’t do it without you and for that I am grateful! Together, we are creating a space for girls to feel comfortable to be themselves, to find their voices and to flourish as leaders. Please know that we are dedicated to providing you the tools needed for our girls to succeed. The “Volunteer Resource Guide” (VRG) will serve as a reference in helping make your volunteer role a rewarding experience throughout this membership year. We are the largest leadership development organization for girls in the world and a member of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, a sisterhood of close to 10 million girls and adults in 150 countries. Our Mission Girl Scouts builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. We strive to be the premier leadership organization for girls, and experts on their growth and development. Girl Scout Promise On my honor, I will try: To serve God* and my country, To help people at all times, And to live by the Girl Scout Law. *Girl Scouts of the USA makes no attempt to define or interpret the word “God” in the Girl Scout Promise. The national office provides support materials to all councils to ensure that the Girl Scout experience is nationally consistent. 5 Your Support Team A team of volunteers and staff provides you with local support, learning opportunities and advice. As a volunteer, you will have the most contact with your Girl Scout support team, which is called a service unit. Service units have a team of volunteers available to help. Be sure you attend service unit meetings and ask plenty of questions! Access through MyGS. • Volunteer Essentials: Found on the Volunteer Page of the website. 6 Girl Scout Volunteers How to become a Girl Scout Volunteer Successful completion of the membership process, including a background check, is required to be appointed to a volunteer position with Girl Scouts of Ohio’s Heartland. • Purchase a membership. Go to gsoh.org and click Volunteer Today. • Proceed through the steps and purchase your membership. • Watch a short video introducing the Girl Scout Program. • Complete a successful background check (look for the email with information on how to complete your background check). Once those steps are complete, you will receive two emails and a phone call: • Email: How to access the MyGS Membership Community. o Items that can be accessed under myGS: Volunteer Toolkit, Member Profile, gsLearn. • Email: Next steps for training, information about your service unit meetings and other useful support. • Call: From your membership manager. Background Check The background check is required in the state of Ohio and includes a criminal record check as well as a check of sexual offender registries. This is for the safety of our girls. What is interesting to note is that even though the subtle energy systems on the earth have been verified scientifically as existing and even given names, scientists are only able to explain how some of them work. Even though we do not fully comprehend the enormity and absolute amazingness of these energies, they form an integral part of life as we know it. These various energy systems still exist regardless of whether you “believe in them” or not (unlike Santa Claus). You can liken them to micro-organisms that were unable to be seen before the invention of the microscope – they couldn’t be seen, but they killed people anyway. We, and everything in the universe, is made of energy, which can be defined most simply as “information that vibrates”. What’s more interesting is that everything vibrates at its own unique frequency / speed, for example, a brain cell vibrates differently than a hair cell, and similar organisms vibrate in similar ways, but retain a slightly different frequency than the other.

There are ugly talk styles out there, dangerous to both a speaker’s reputation and an audience’s well-being. Here are four to steer clear of at all costs. THE SALES PITCH Sometimes speakers get it exactly backwards. They plan to take, not give. Several years ago a famed author and business consultant came to TED. I was excited to hear his presentation on how to think outside the box. What happened instead horrified me. He began talking about a series of businesses that had apparently made a significant leap forward as a result of an action they took. And what was that action? They had all booked his consultancy services. After 5 minutes of this, the audience was getting antsy and I’d had enough. I stood up and began to interrupt. Every eye turned my way. I was sweating. My microphone was on. Everyone could hear everything. Me: I have a request here. Perhaps you could tell us about the actual type of thinking you recommend? We want to know how it actually works, so that we’ve got a takeaway. As is, it’s a bit too much of an ad. [Nervous applause. Awkward pause.] Speaker: It takes three days to go into it. In 15 minutes, there is no way I can tell you all about how to do it. My purpose is to tell you that these things can work and therefore motivate you to look further into them.
