Transportation Timetables, 1880-2007 MSS #015, page 1 Transportation Timetables, 1880-2007 MSS: # 016 Processed by: Jason Freitas, December 2014 Volume: 10 boxes Abstract: Timetables for railroads, bus companies, airlines, steamship, and boat transportation companies comprise this collection. The collection was accumulated over the course of about fifty years by various individuals. Though the bulk of items date from the 1940’s to the 1960’s, earlier and later periods are also well- represented. The majority of the collection consists of both employee and public timetables from railroads of New England, with other items coming from New York and Canadian railroads, a wide variety of smaller New England railroads, bus and steamship companies, and railway companies that preceded the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority. Collection Creator: Beverly Historical Society, Walker Transportation Collection Provenance: This collection has been amassed through various donors since 1969. Conservation/Processor's Note: The majority of items consist of saddle-stitched booklets and folded pamphlets. Modern items are more likely to be plastic-coated or synthetic paper and in good condition. Items older than the 1960’s are generally more fragile and should be handled with care. Four different box shapes are used to accommodate the variety of shapes and sizes: standard letter-size boxes for booklets and fragile pamphlets, flip-top pamphlet boxes for sturdier pamphlets, flip-top photo boxes for pocket pamphlets under seven inches, and custom-size boxes for unique items. “Folders” in the pamphlet and photo boxes are not actually folders, but dividers that sit in front of the items they describe. Copyright: Request for permission to publish material from the collection must be submitted in writing to the Curator of Collections in the Cabot House of the Beverly Historical Society & Museum. Preferred Citation: [Title of Document], Transportation Timetables, Beverly Historical Society and Museum, 117 Cabot Street, Beverly, MA 01915. © 2014, Beverly Historical Society Page 1 117 Cabot St., Beverly, MA 01915 MSS #015, page 2 Biographical or Historical Note: TBD Scope and Content Note: The collection includes both employee and public timetables for various forms of transportation, most notably for major railroad companies of New England. Timetable books used by railroad employees are mainly booklets that span the late 1800’s through the mid-twentieth century. Public timetables for railroads, railway companies, bus and coach services, airlines, and steamboat, boat and ferry services come in various-sized pamphlets and span the entire twentieth century. Also included are a few miscellaneous items of interest, such as train tickets and system maps for Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority. Related Materials: None. Series List: The collection is arranged into ten series: Series I: Nation-wide transportation companies of the United States, 1940-1995 Series II: Transportation companies of Connecticut, 1903-2000 Series III: Transportation companies of Maine, 1897-1980 Series IV: Transportation companies of Massachusetts, ca. 1880-2007 Series V: Transportation companies of New Hampshire, 1937-1987 Series VI: Transportation companies of New York, 1937-1988 Series VII: Transportation companies of Rhode Island, 1953-1969 Series VIII: Transportation companies of Vermont, 1900-1995 Series IX: Transportation companies of Canada, 1957-1998 Series X: Other companies, 1900-n.d. © 2014, Beverly Historical Society Page 2 117 Cabot St., Beverly, MA 01915 MSS #015, page 3 Container List: Series I: Nation-wide transportation companies of the United States, 1940-1995 Series/Arrangement Note: Arranged alphabetically by form of transportation, company name, and date range. Massachusetts House of Representatives: Upgrading Greater Boston MBTA Rail System St. John’s Preparatory School - Danvers, Massachusetts - December 2020 Letter from the Chairs Dear Delegates, My name is Brett Butler. I am a Senior at St. John’s Prep, and I will serve as your chair for the Massachusetts House of Representatives on Railway Service. I have been involved in Model UN at the Prep for 5 years. Outside of Model UN, I am on the SJP Tennis Team, an Eagles’ Wings Leader, a member of Spire Society, a member of the National Honor Society, and a member of the Chinese National Honor Society. The topic of Railway Service has really fascinated me, since my father is an executive in the FTA (Federal Transit Administration), which is part of the DOT (Department of Transportation), and he has been my inspiration for my research into this topic. Also, I am a frequent passenger on the “T” and Commuter Rail (as well as commuter rail and subway services in many different cities such as Washington D.C., Los Angeles, and Montreal). Thus, I recommend that you read through this paper as well as to do your own research on the frequency, extension, and public trust in the Greater Boston Railway Service. Please do not hesitate to email me with any questions or concerns! I will be happy to assist you, and I look forward to meeting you in December! Thank you, Brett Butler ‘21 ([email protected]) Chair, Massachusetts House of Representatives on Railway Service, SJPMUN XV Dear Delegates, My name is Brendan O’Friel.

Tillitson collection on railroads creator: Tillitson, George E. Identifier/Call Number: M0165 Physical Description: 50.5 Linear Feet(9 cartons and 99 manuscript storage boxes) Date (inclusive): 1880-1959 Abstract: Notes on the history of railroads in the United States and Canada. Conditions Governing Access The collection is open for research. Note that material is stored off-site and must be requested at least 36 hours in advance of intended use. Provenance Gift of George E. Tillitson, 1955. Special Notes One very useful feature of the material is further described in the two attached pages. This is the carefully annotated study of a good many of the important large railroads of the United States complete within their own files, these to be found within the official state of incorporation. Here will be included page references to the frequently huge number of small short-line roads that usually wound up by being “taken in” to the larger and expending Class II and I roads. Some of these files, such as the New York Central or the Pennsylvania Railroad are very big themselves. Michigan, Wisconsin, Oregon, and Washington are large because the many lumber railroads have been extensively studied out.
