MSS #015, page 1 Transportation Timetables, 1880-2007 MSS: # 016 Processed by: Jason Freitas, December 2014 Volume: 10 boxes Abstract: Timetables for railroads, bus companies, airlines, steamship, and boat transportation companies comprise this collection. The collection was accumulated over the course of about fifty years by various individuals. Though the bulk of items date from the 1940’s to the 1960’s, earlier and later periods are also well- represented. The majority of the collection consists of both employee and public timetables from railroads of New England, with other items coming from New York and Canadian railroads, a wide variety of smaller New England railroads, bus and steamship companies, and railway companies that preceded the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority. Collection Creator: Beverly Historical Society, Walker Transportation Collection Provenance: This collection has been amassed through various donors since 1969. Conservation/Processor's Note: The majority of items consist of saddle-stitched booklets and folded pamphlets. Modern items are more likely to be plastic-coated or synthetic paper and in good condition. Items older than the 1960’s are generally more fragile and should be handled with care. Four different box shapes are used to accommodate the variety of shapes and sizes: standard letter-size boxes for booklets and fragile pamphlets, flip-top pamphlet boxes for sturdier pamphlets, flip-top photo boxes for pocket pamphlets under seven inches, and custom-size boxes for unique items. “Folders” in the pamphlet and photo boxes are not actually folders, but dividers that sit in front of the items they describe. Copyright: Request for permission to publish material from the collection must be submitted in writing to the Curator of Collections in the Cabot House of the Beverly Historical Society & Museum.

Railroads in Muncie 1 Running Head: RAILROADS IN MUNCIE Railroads in Muncie, Indiana Author Michael L. Johnston May 1, 2009 Copyright 2009. M. L. Johnston. All rights reserved. Railroads in Muncie 2 Running Head: Railroads in Muncie Abstract Railroads in Muncie, Indiana explains the evolution of railroads in Muncie, and Delaware County, Indiana. Throughout the history of the United States, the railroad industry has been a prominent contributor to the development and growth of states and communities. Communities that did not have railroads did not develop as competitively until improvements in roads and highways gave them access to an alternative form of transportation. This manuscript provides a brief overview of the history and location of the railroads in Muncie and their importance to the growth of the community. Copyright 2009. M. L. Johnston. All rights reserved. Railroads in Muncie 3 Running Head: Railroads in Muncie Railroads in Muncie, Indiana Evolution of the U.S. Railroad Industry The U.S. railroad industry started around 1810 in the East. After the Civil War, railroad construction was rampant and often unscrupulous. Too many railroad lines were built that were under-capitalized, poorly constructed, and did not have enough current business to survive. Monopolistic and financial abuses, greed and political corruption forced government regulations on the railroads. From 1887 until 1980 the federal Interstate Commerce Commission strictly regulated economics and safety of all railroads operating in the U.S. Until 1980 the various states, also, regulated economics and safety of railroad companies within their individual state boundaries. Railroads are privately owned and the federal government considers them to be common carriers for the benefit of the public.

  • Preservation News
Preservation News Vol. 2 No. 3 Fall 2015 NGPF STARTS RESTORAT ION EFFORTS FOR D&RGW T- 12 #168 The NGPF paid $10,000.00 for the move of D&RGW narrow gauge engine; T -12 #168, from its decades-long display site at a park across from the train station in Colorado Springs to insure restoration efforts could begin this winter. Raising money to restore an engine is far easier than raising money to move it from one place to another. Hence the NGPF felt it could make a difference by underwriting the move and helping the restoration project to start. The intent is to operate this T-12 on the C&TS. The history of this class of engine is explored in a related article on page 2, but it represents late 19th century technology for passenger power and remains an elegant example of the Golden Age of railroading. #168 was shopped at D&RGW’s shops at Burnham in Denver in 1938 and donated to the City of Colorado Springs where it has remained on display, cosmetically restored until it’s move this September for restoration. Indeed, it is possible that if the #168 is in as good shape as is hoped given its overhaul prior to being placed on display, a T class engine could be steaming in Colorado in 2016. The NGPF is helping to make this possible and the effort is off to a good start. And the engines Mal Ferrell called “these beautiful Rio Grande ten- wheelers” may be around for many years to come.
