SANTA IS MISSING By Nathan Chen and Luke Bookoff

One winter evening, Jack, and Sammy were jumping on the trampoline. “Please, please can I have a turn? You have been on for such a LONG time!” Rosetta asked angrily. “No, we won’t let you on, we have only been on for one minute.” “Hey guys it’s Eve, don’t you want to go to bed early?” suggested Sammy. “What a wonderful idea!” said Rosetta and Jack together. “Wake up everybody! “ shouted Jack. The three siblings rushed downstairs to unwrap their presents. When they arrived downstairs, there were no presents. At school they talked to their friends and discovered that they did not get any presents either! At home, they asked their parents if Santa had come during the day and they replied no. Meanwhile, Santa realized he missed Christmas. “Elves, Elves! Do you have the presents for Christmas? We are a day late!”. Santa was worried but he still had to deliver the kids’ presents. Back at the house, Rosetta, Sammy, and Jack were still waiting for Santa to come. “Kids it’s 10:30! It’s past your bedtime” Mom yelled. “But Santa’s not here yet, “ Sammy whined. “No buts,” Mom snapped. “Awwww,” cried Rosetta and Jack. So as they were told, they went to bed sadly. RRRIIIINNNGGGG!! Time for school! Rosetta hoped to see some under the Christmas . The three siblings ran downstairs. Guess what? There were shiny red presents under their tree! !1 2014-15 School Year - Holiday Edition Creative Stories

A Christmas Story By Clarke Norman and Ella Rosoff

Ryan was never good. So at Christmas he always got coal from Santa. But this year it was going to change. Ryan grabbed his coat and headed out for the . After many hours he FINALLY got there. He couldn’t believe his eyes. There was Santa standing in front of a big sleigh. Ryan ran up to Santa frantically. “Santa, Santa!” he chanted. Ryan could not believe this was actually happening! “Oh hi there little boy” Santa laughed. “It’s me” Ryan answered. “Oh, Ryan,” Santa exclaimed shaking his head, “It’s you, the bad one.” Ryan weakly smiled trying not to act embarrassed. “Uh so I was wondering,” he asked. “What am I going to get for Christmas?” Ryan hoped it would be different this year. Santa pulled a long list out of his pocket and skimmed through it. “Ok….Ryan you are getting coal.” Ryan had tears in his eyes. “Coal” he whined “I wasn’t THAT bad this year.” Santa looked at another long list. “Okay let me see. Riley, Rex, Ryan, there you are.” Santa’s eyes looked like they were about to fall out of his head. He gasped after seeing a long list of things Ryan had done. Santa shook his head. “Sorry lad, you did a lot of bad things.” Ryan nodded,. He couldn’t talk back to Santa. Ryan turned around and headed home. After a few minutes Ryan heard a voice. “Ryan, Ryan.” Slowly his vision became clearer. He woke up. “Good morning Mom” he said sleepily. Ryan hugged his Mom. “I don’t care what you get me this year.” Ryan headed downstairs, sprinting towards the . He found a big box and tore the paper off of it. “An Xbox!” he shouted. He looked at the tag. It read: from Santa. Ryan smiled “Thank you Santa.” he whispered.

Christmas Show By Julia Evans Almost every year around Christmas, my family and I go to a place called Brookside Gardens. Brookside Gardens is a scenic garden area where there are many different exhibits. Brookside has a butterfly garden, herb and plant gardens and of course the light show. Unfortunately this year the light show is closed due to construction. However, another exciting place to see over the holidays is the Gaithersburg Winter Lights Festival. There you and your family can drive through a brilliant display of Christmas lights, that include moving lights such as teddy bears, men and snowflakes. There are also elves, penguins and many more fun holiday related items to see. One of the most loved Christmas light shows is The National Christmas Tree ceremony. Every year in D.C. staff puts up a Christmas tree and decorate it with colorful Christmas lights. Each year a tree is donated for the President to light. It is free and open to the public. Enjoy these two beautiful Christmas displays and have a warm and wonderful Christmas!

Top 5 Places To Visit During Winter Break By Xander Arnold If you like to ski, snowboard and tube, check out Liberty or White Tail Ski Resort in southern Pennsylvania, about an hour and a half away from Washington. Don’t forget to bundle up!! You can also learn about the history and background of our state capitol in Annapolis, MD. Another place you can visit during winter break is the Amish Country in Lancaster, PA. It’s like visiting the past. Finally, a “sweet” place to visit is Hershey world, the chocolate capitol in Pennsylvania. To me these are the top 5 places to visit.

Winter Wonderland at Gaylord National Resort By Elizabeth Martin and Zoe Ferguson

This year, the Gaylord National Resort’s Ice Festival theme is . It’s located at the Marriott Hotel at the National Harbor in Washington DC — the resort includes a hotel, exhibit, stores, and more. Each year, they have huge ice carvings, including parts of the exhibits with slides! It is really cold — 9 degrees! — to keep the ice from melting, so they give you a parka to wear inside. It’s very popular so the line to get in is very long, but it is totally worth it! It really feels like you are part of the story! They play music, have colored ice, and the carvings are spectacular! Make sure to bring gloves, a scarf, and a warm jacket — you need to bundle up because it is literally, as cold as ice!

America by Air Apollo to the Moon Barron Hilton Pioneers of Flight Gallery Boeing Milestones of Flight Hall !4 2014-15 School Year - Holiday Edition Origins of the Holidays By Emily Rubenstein The History Thousands of years ago, a man named Alexander the Great took over the Middle East (the area including Lebanon, Israel, Turkey and Syria) and became the Emperor. He was very tolerant of the different of the people who lived there. When he died, one of his successors was not as tolerant and only respected the he believed in, the Greek religion. He killed many Jews, tried to make the Jews follow his Greek religion and converted the Temple of Jerusalem into a place to worship the Greek god Zeus. His actions led to a revolt led by Judah Maccabee. Against huge odds, Judah Maccabee and his forces regained control of the Temple. Next the Jews had some fixing to do. The Temple was no longer holy, for it had been used for the worship of idols. The Jews held a rededication celebration for saving the almost-destroyed Temple. Part of the ceremony of making the Temple a holy place was the continuous burning of oil. However, the Greeks had only left one day’s worth of oil after they had used the oil themselves. The Jews knew they wouldn’t have enough oil to last until they could make more oil, which would take eight days, but they lit it anyway to show their respect. The oil miraculously lasted all eight days until more oil could be made. That is the miracle of Hanukkah, and the reason why Hanukkah is referred to as the Jewish Festival of Lights.

How We Celebrate Nowadays, Jewish people light menorahs, which are candelabras that hold nine —eight to represent each of the days the oil burned and one called the shamash, which is set apart from the other eight and is used to light them. Jews also eat foods cooked in oil, such as potato pancaked called latkes and donuts (yum!). Jewish kids also play a game called dreidel, a spinning top with one Hebrew letter on each of its four sides: nun, gimel, hay and shin. These letters stand for the words, in Hebrew, for “A miracle happened there.” (In Israel, one of the dreidel’s letters is different, for the letters stand for “A miracle happened here.”)

LaMotta Once upon a time, there were three daughters who could not afford marriage because they did not have a dowry. A nice man, St. Nick, was passing through the village when he heard people talking about the daughters. He decided to give them gold in secret because Nicholas knew that their father would not accept charity. So, at night, when it was pitch black outside, he searched for an open . He could not find one so he threw the gold into the chimney. Oh, and guess what…the gold landed directly into the stockings laying down on the hearth to dry! That’s why we put our stockings at the fireplace so we could find a surprise in the morning!

!7 2014-15 School Year - Holiday Edition Seasonal Poetry Ruins of Pangea

By Ronan Zwa

Evil resides in the darkest of shadows, Waiting to strike again. And when it does, A reign of terror will develop. Nothing can resist the wrath of devils but this, This is even worse.

But some fought back, Instead of cowering in the shadows, Waiting, for the terror to subside. They all had one opponent, And they all had one emotion. Anger. They sought vengeance upon those who stripped them of their homes, And they fought, And they fought.

Then one day, A rainbow appeared, Driving the evil from this place. And here we sit, In the ruins of Pangea,

The great empire, That broke apart.

THE FOX By Luke J. LaMotta

I hear the fox howl as it drags his tail in the woods, His crimson fur reflects the glimmer in the moonlight so, As though the moon’s a cold ball of dough, I wonder where he will go, but I do not know, While the fox is gone, I will be waiting.

Sugar Cookie Pops – More Like Lollipops By Will Gawronski

Ingredients

1. ½ cup butter, softened

2. ½ cup shortening

3. 1 cup granulated sugar

4. 1 cup powdered sugar

5. 2 large eggs

6. ¾ cup canola or vegetable oil

7. 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract

8. 4 cups all-purpose flour

9. 1 teaspoon baking soda

10. 1 teaspoon salt

11. 1 teaspoon cream of tartar

12. colored sugars, sparkling sugars and multicolored jimmies

13. white craft sticks

Directions

Beat butter and shortening together until fluffy; add sugars. Add eggs, oil and vanilla. Combine flour and next 3 ingredients; add to butter mixture. Cover and chill overnight or 2 hours. Shape into 1 ½ inch balls and roll into colored sugar or jimmies to coat. Place 2” apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Insert craft sticks 1” into each cookie. Bake at 350 for 10-11 minutes. Let cool 2 minutes.

My Experience

This weekend I made the sugar cookie pops with my Mom. We were short on time, so, we put the dough in the freezer for 20 minutes instead of two hours in the refrigerator. My favorite part was blending the ingredients with the electric mixer. It was also fun to roll the dough balls in the sprinkles. After we put them in the oven, we checked at 11 minutes and added two more minutes. Our “pops” were flat, instead of round balls. They look more like lollipops. I also thought they were not sweet enough. I suggest keeping the dough in the refrigerator overnight and adding more sugar. We baked a second batch with dough that was in the refrigerator overnight and it worked a little better. !12 2014-15 School Year - Holiday Edition Recipes

Apple Pie In The Size Of A Cupcake By Kayla Mao

This is how you can make a cupcake sized apple pie.

Ingredients: 3/4 cup of all-purpose flour 1/4 cup of shortening 1/4 tsp. of salt 2 tbsp. of cold water (If that's not enough then add 2-4 tbsp. more) 1 green apple 1/4 cup of sugar 1 tsp. of cinnamon Half a stick of butter

You will also need: Chopsticks (optional) and fork Knife Measuring cups and spoons Cupcake pan Oven Mixing Bowls

WARNING!!!! Kids UNDER the age of 11 should have an ADULT help them with cutting or using the hot oven.

- Let’s get started. First, pre-heat the oven to 350F°. - You need to get 3/4 cup of all-purpose flour in the bowl and sift it with 1/4 tsp. of salt with a chopstick or a fork. - 1/4 cup of shortening and mix it with the flour and salt. Press the shortening down with a fork. Each piece should be the size of a pea. - Then, add the water and mix it with your hands. Once all the flour is all gathered, just let it sit. - While the dough is sitting, cut the apple into 15-20 slices. - After you cut the apples, put the apples in another bowl and add 1 teaspoon of sugar from the 1/4 cup of sugar. Then add the teaspoon of cinnamon. Mix together. - Then butter 3 of the 12 cupcake pan slots. - Take some of the dough, and flatten it a bit so that it fits into the bottom of the cupcake pan slot but curls up slightly on the sides so that it looks like a little crust. Then put 4-7 pieces of apples in it. - Next, flatten another piece of dough but only enough that it will the mini pie. Make a small plus sign with your knife in the middle of the pie crust cover. Sprinkle 1/4 of a teaspoon of sugar onto the pies. - Have a parent put the pie tin into the oven for a minimum of 15 minutes. Make sure to check on them frequently. Once the pies are golden, they should be done! Serves three.

I hope you like them!
