2 • Dear Friend, Table of Contents I am very pleased to realize that we have presented you this Private Lives Title Page 5 season with what I consider to be the three greatest Cowardesque in the English language. We by Drew Lichtenberg 6 started with our remounting of About the Playwright: Ethan McSweeny’s production Noël Coward 10 of this past summer, continued with Keith Baxter helming Private Lives Cast 11 Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest, and now we conclude our season, as well as our crash About STC 11 course in English-language high , with Noël Cast Biographies 14 Coward’s Private Lives, directed by Maria Aitken.

Lonely too smart for their own good, they fall into and out of love with, an almost existential unease. Little surprise, then, that Elyot and Amanda have been played in STC Teaching Artists the decades since by real-life stage couples such as Robert Stephens and Maggie Smith, Richard Burton MASTER are award-winning, and , or by leading stars such as Alan ACTING working . She has starred in more leading Coward roles herself than any other living , and as a director she is fast becoming one of the foremost interpreters of Coward’s work. She has had profound success on the West End and Broadway with the Tony Award- winning adaptation of ’s The 39 Steps, and I am proud to welcome her and her very talented cast to Washington for this show.

As the last show in our 2013–14 subscription season, let me also take this opportunity to thank you for your continued patronage. 5 Cowardesque(or, the Invention of Modern Drama)

At first glance,Private Lives seems like the mark” of “comedies of bad manners,” a thinnest of excuses for a play. Amanda “high-camp masterpiece” in which Coward and Elyot (originally played by Coward and undermines nearly every one of his muse Gertrude Lawrence) divorced the prevailing social mores of his day. five years ago. They meet again on the Amanda and Elyot, Lahr writes, “have balcony of a hotel in the south of France inherited a world where romance is a put- while honeymooning with their respective on, honor a masquerade, morality a thing of (frighteningly attractive, and frighteningly the past, and the future unknown.” In other dull) new spouses. Off of this absurd words, Private Lives may be a frivolous play, contrivance, the plot, or what little there is but it is seriously frivolous, much like of it, is off and running. The Importance of Being Earnest, which Oscar Wilde subtitled a “trivial comedy for Coward supplies no given circumstances for serious people.” this : neither Amanda nor Elyot seem to hold a job, nor do they Coward’s radical design becomes fully seem to have family members, or interests apparent in his daring and completely outside each other and themselves. Their unpredictable second act, a brilliant little dialogue is peppered with references to two-hander which, like the “Don Juan places they have traveled, civilized things in Hell” interlude in Shaw’s Man and they have enjoyed, but the play contains Superman, or the dialogue between Hamlet, no references to a political or social realm Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, could easily external to itself. Amanda and Elyot (and stand on its own as an absurdist one-act by extension the play’s dramaturgy) are play. Elevating plotlessness to the status of supinely worldly, but they are not of this high art, Coward locks Amanda and Elyot world. If the play seems thrown together, together in a Parisian flat, forcing them that’s because it was. Coward wrote the play to ping his mercurial, delightful dialogue over less than two weeks in 1929, “sweating off each other. The scene fills quickly with gloomily” while holed up with the fever in brilliant, unexpected curlicues on every Shanghai’s Cathay Hotel, accompanied by subject from the grammatically correct nothing but a pair of silk pyjamas, 27 pieces term for a plural herd of bison (“You might of luggage and a gramophone. My grandmother had wrote of the play: “It is minimal as an art a lovely seat”) – and that’s just in the first deco curve, it matches its content; a plotless five minutes. Perhaps most delightfully, play for purposeless people.” the nonsensical refrain of Amanda and Elyot’s safe word – “Sollocks!” – joins the And yet, in nearly the same breath, Lahr also immortal comedy line-up of Bunburyisms, notes that Private Lives is the “high-water Malapropisms and Dogberryisms.

6 Despite, or perhaps because of this determined silliness, the tone of the act pivots from giddy frivolity to something sharper, sadder and ultimately shocking. A scene that began in the haze of love curdles quickly into the murk of reality. Amanda and Elyot are witty. They are cozy. They are also depressed. They feel horrible about what they’ve done, and who they are, and what it all means. They admit to each other that they don’t believe in God, or the Devil; they don’t believe in anything, Bianca Amato and James Waterston in Huntington Theatre Company’s really. “It seems so silly to go on, Private Lives. For all his apparent “You can hardly call three liqueur glasses in kinship with Wildean and Shakespearean a whole evening going on, and on, and on.” , he is ultimately the father of th The carousel of dialogue – by turns both an entirely new and entirely 20 century earnest and trivial – continues until the two kind of play. It is a comedy less about plot shut each other up the only way they can. and more about behavior, more devoted (It’s not what you think.) to the theatrical present tense than the fictive illusion, a comedy of silences and Coward’s ability to make his dialogue mental misdirections rather than witty appear tossed off effortlessly – an extension sayings and concrete meanings. In the early of the dashing, seemingly improvisatory 1960s, at the beginning of his theatrical way in which he lived his life – has had the renaissance, Coward wrote to Pinter: “I unfortunate effect of minimizing his mastery, have just read The Homecoming twice as well as his influence. As Barry Day has through […] I love your choice of words, noted, one of Coward’s most surprising your resolute refusal to explain anything theatrical heirs is Harold Pinter, who was and the arrogant, but triumphant demands one of the first to articulate a deeper you make on the audience’s imagination.” truth about Coward’s art. Having seen a He may as well have been talking about his production of Private Lives, Pinter realized own dramaturgy. After all, Coward invented that, “a character could stand on a stage and the “Pinteresque” play. There is perhaps say one thing and the audience would know no better, more quintessential, more he actually meant something else.” The Cowardesque example than Private Lives. scene Pinter was referring to is the famous balcony scene in Act 1. As Amanda and Elyot Drew Lichtenberg, Literary Associate discuss the flatness of Norfolk; the relative size of China and Japan; the advisability of seeing the Taj Mahal by moonlight, what they are really saying is: “I still love you. Do you still love me?”

shakespeare theater ad February 2014.indd 1 2/18/2014 4:53:55 PM About the Playwright

Perhaps more than any other twentieth-century artist, Noël Coward lived a public, not a private, life. Born in London on December 16, 1899 (and named Noël for the Christmas season), Coward showed a knack for the stage early on, singing and picking out tunes on the piano. His mother Violet loved theatre, and enrolled him in dance lessons. Coward began acting professionally at 11. At 14, he met fellow child star Gertrude Lawrence, with whom he would share a profound creative and personal kinship for the rest of his life. By 20, Coward had begun writing plays and , in most of which he fully intended to star.

Coward’s breakthrough came in 1924 with The Vortex, a play that was shocking for its time in its portrayal of a drug-addicted young man and his oversexed mother. As the censor wrote, “If we ban this, we shall have to ban Hamlet.” Hay Fever and Fallen Angels followed, both in 1925, and Easy Virtue in 1926.

After a retreat in Hawaii due to exhaustion, Coward returned to work in late 1929. While on a tour of Asia, he experienced a vision of Gertrude Lawrence in “a white Molyneux dress on a terrace in the South of France.” Inspired and holed up in a Shanghai hotel with the flu, he wrotePrivate Lives over the next two weeks. The play’s unique mix of acerbic and aching romanticism proved extraordinarily popular, particularly with “Noël and Gertie” playing Elyot and Amanda, thinly disguised versions of themselves. Coward, who detested long runs, limited the play’s London engagement to three months, which sold out within a week.

Coward followed Private Lives’ daring portrait of adult love by writing and starring in a play about open relationships: 1932’s Design for Living, written for himself, Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontaine. Because of the play’s erotic sangfroid, it premiered on Broadway; it would not be seen in London until 1939. The year 1936 saw one of Coward’s most ambitious ventures – Tonight at 8:30, a series of nine one-act plays in which he and Lawrence played all the leads. , a sympathetic portrayal of adultery, would be adapted by Coward into the Palme d’Or-winning filmBrief Encounter (1945), his fourth and final collaboration with the director David Lean.

Coward’s biggest commercial success came in 1941, with the supernatural , which ran for years on the West End. During World War II, Coward dove into service, making the filmIn Which We Serve and even engaging in the occasional spy mission. His postwar plays proved less successful, but he reinvented himself as a star, playing a sellout season in Las Vegas in 1955. In the late 1950s, he appeared in cameos in such films asAround the World in 80 Days, Our Man in Havana and The Italian Job.

Coward’s theatrical “Dad’s Renaissance,” as he called it, began in 1963 with a London revival of Private Lives and an invitation to direct Hay Fever at the National Theatre, the first production there by a living playwright. Known as “The Master,” Coward had forged an astonishing career as playwright, screenwriter, novelist, actor, singer, dancer and producer. He received a long-deserved knighthood in 1969. In 1973 he died peacefully at his home in Jamaica.
