The Golden West College Foundation

The Golden West College Foundation was organized in 1985 to solicit and manage gifts to benefit the college and its students. The Foundation is dedicated to supporting the College’s mission of providing comprehensive academic opportunities to the community for lifelong learning.

A board of directors, who provides the leadership and direction for the organization’s operation, manages the Foundation. The Foundation has grown steadily since 1985 with assets over $1,900,000. This has been accomplished through donations of cash, bequests and grants from individuals and businesses. The

Foundation has provided $2,810,949 in scholarships to Golden West College students. In addition to cash assets, the Foundation annually receives donated equipment and supplies that represent thousands of dollars in gifts in-kind.

The primary focus of the Foundation Board of Directors is working toward building support for college-wide needs. To nurture groups who have special interests in supporting Golden West College, the Foundation provides staff support and direction to three auxiliaries. Each auxiliary is managed by its own board and officers, requiring membership dues for operational expenses. Report from the Foundation Chairman Bob Polentz

The Golden West Foundation continued its participation in the Scholarship and Awards Ceremony held in May by awarding scholarships to over 200 students. Since 1986, the Foundation has awarded over $2,800,000 to deserving students. This has been extremely gratifying to the Foundation as the awarding of scholarships is a direct contributor to the enhancement of student success at Golden West College.

On Saturday March 25, the Foundation held its ninth annual major fundraiser, the “Golden West College Gala.” Our success with this event continued, raising approximately $132,000-- a new record. The proceeds funded the Foundation’s Wish List Program and the Foundation’s Endowed Scholarships. We particularly want to thank Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., Elmore Toyota and Union Bank of California as major sponsors and all the other underwriters who gave so generously to this event. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Gala Committee and its co-chairs, Emilee Young and Charla Kabana, as well as the community at large for continuing to support this very important event for the college. We are looking forward to continuing success at our tenth Gala scheduled for March 24, 2007.

Our 15th Annual Courtyard of Honor Ceremony was celebrated last October. We had six Pillars of Support (+$25,000) including the Profesóra Cronk Memorial Pillar, Charlie and Margie Bunten Pillar, Carolyn Cunningham Pillar, El Viento Pillar, the James Jordan Memorial Nursing Pillar, and the Norah Morrison, J.D., C.F.P. Pillar. The donor wall was increased by 40 donor names, with seven in the Golden Society ($10,000+) category. Three outstanding GWC alumni were honored as Alumni Pillar of Achievement recipients. Since the inception of this awards program in 1991, seventy-three alumni have been honored.

As we look to 2007, we want to express our collective gratitude for the support and leadership of the Foundation Board members whose continued commitment and participation is critical to the overall success of the Foundation’s mission. The Foundation’s objectives for 2007 include expanding Board membership and continuing a high level of participation from our members while seeking fresh ideas for new fund raising opportunities and existing programs.

This year has continued to be relatively challenging from an investment perspective with the market basically performing in a relatively narrow range. Under the guidance of the Investment Committee and its chairman, Doug Fabian, we have exercised a high degree of conservatism relative to our investments during the past year and will continue to exercise prudence in our efforts to increase the value of the portfolio and to provide a reasonable return on endowed funds. I would like to take the opportunity to thank Fabian Investment Resources and Spectrum Asset Management for their continued support and guidance on a volunteer basis.

In closing, I would like to personally thank the Foundation Board of Directors, Golden West College President Wes Bryan, and those who have provided advice, counsel, professional guidance, financial support and personal time to the Board during the past year. It is not often that I have had the unique opportunity to work with such a dedicated group, and I look forward to the upcoming year in which we will work as a team towards the goal of enhancing student success at Golden West College.

Message from Golden West College President, Wes Bryan

As you are aware, Golden West College is celebrating “40 years of excellence.” Our year long celebration started with our participation in the Huntington Beach Fourth of July parade where our Foundation partners with Huntington Beach Hospital to sponsor a float. This year we won the Sweepstakes award. It was also gratifying to see our current student body president, Brandon Shelly, as well as our first student body president from 1966, John Furbish, waving to the crowds.

At each of our events, I have had the privilege of meeting students who have benefited from the generosity of your support. Some were scholarship recipients, others were helped through the book loan program, and others were able to use equipment in their classrooms purchased with wish list donations. Living in an affluent area we sometimes forget how important these efforts are in making a significant difference in the lives of our students. Getting to meet them years later, it is also rewarding to see the difference they have made in the lives of others. It simply validates what we already know intuitively – that an education not only improves the quality of an individual life – it contributes to the community as a whole. It is a gift that keeps on giving. After all, a Foundation that spends over a quarter of a million dollars per year of its bequests on student scholarships is really about building futures.

I am proud to be associated with a Foundation Board that understands the importance of educational opportunities and donates their time and energy to help expand them for students in need. This is why I have made it a high priority to aid in the expansion of our Foundation Board and increase our donors and scholarships. Recently, I read an article in the “Chronicle of Higher Education” that pointed out that donors increasingly are realizing the importance of supporting two-year institutions because they understand that importance of helping students get ready for transfer or learn entry level job skills. They know that if they can help them get a strong start, they are more likely to finish their degree or certification. Community colleges play a central role in workforce preparation.

I hope as you review this report you will consider involving yourself to a greater degree in the projects that our campus community sponsors. Without your support, the college could not begin to offer the scholarships and programs which provide our students with so many avenues to success. I am excited to be on this Board as we make plans together to ensure that the next 40 years will be as bright as the last.

President, Golden West College
