These are the saints whose names we know, rest in peace. like Juan Diego and Teresa, but they also include our Amen. parents and grandparents, aunts and uncles, Padrinos y Madrinas, who have gone before us and shown us the way. Our prayer on All Souls Day is for those who have died. All are invited to a special evening of prayer at 7:00pm on November 2. This night will include an St. Church opportunity for you to announce the name of the loved ones in your family who have died if you wish to do so. As Christians we strengthen our faith in the resurrection when we visit graves and honor them with flowers, light candles and pray for them, or share the stories of our deceased loved ones with members of our family in the next generation.

ST. CYPRIAN PARISH PAGE 2 RIVERVIEW, MICHIGAN A singular focus When we try to focus on too many things at once, sometimes we end up doing nothing well. During a visit to their house (see Luke 10:38-42), tells Martha that only one thing is needed and that Mary has chosen rightly. Surely Jesus doesn’t mean that quiet devotion is needed while serving others is not. But when we let ourselves get “worried and distracted by many things,” we may lose sight of the one crucial As I write this article, 150 of our thing: love. 1,200 registered families have made a gift or pledge towards St. Francis is credited with the following quote: “God our CSA goal of $75,861. We came to my house and asked for charity. And I fell on have received gifts and pledges my knees and cried, ‘Beloved, what may I give?’ ‘Just of $36,923, or an average gift of love,’ God said. ‘Just love.’” $246. This puts us at 49% of our CSA goal. And in Galatians 5:6 (NRSV), St. Paul writes, “For in Christ Jesus … the only thing that counts is faith work- Fr. Marc is asking for $200 ing through love.” Amid all the worthy pursuits that per family, which is the same fill your days, remember to choose rightly — by as last year’s request. This is choosing love. newsletternewsletter.com not a normal year, I realize. So much is different, including the CSA giving period which is usually in the spring. But one thing remains unchanged: we Holy mysteries must meet our target with gifts and pledges, or the Dwell in the wonder of these two gifts of God: that parish will receive an invoice from the Archdiocese of God made us in his very image (Genesis 1:26), and Detroit for the balance. On the other hand, if we then — “much more”! — that Christ came to earth as a exceed our target, 100% of the excess comes back to human being (Philippians 2:7). the parish for our own use, “tax free”. Ponder and savor how poet John Donne (1572-1631) We rely on the Archdiocese, and the programs of CSA, describes these mysteries: to provide resources that our parish alone cannot provide. CSA is much like the taxes you pay: you may “’Twas much, that man was made like God before, or may not always agree on how funds are spent, but I But, that God should be made like man, much more.” think we all value having police and fire protection, newsletternewsletter.com parks and recreation, etc. CSA dollars help fund the spiritual and corporal works of mercy in the greater Detroit area. CSA dollars enable the St. Cyprian staff to have professional resources available that we need to do our jobs, from support for catechesis, evangelization support, music ministry support, and legal and financial advice, just to name a few. The complete list would fill an entire page, and it is available on the AOD website, along with other information and FAQs: https://info.aod.org/hc/en-us/articles/360038966873

Please consider making a gift or pledge to help us all continue the good work of the church, not just here at St. Cyprian but throughout downriver and the entire Archdiocese.

Stewardship Thoughts Speaking through the prophet , God affirms to Cyrus the Great, the powerful king, that I am the Lord, there is no other. In St. Matthew’s , the evangelist, through Jesus, reminds us that while God expects us to pay our just share of government taxes, our true loyalty is to Him. His Truth and teaching should reign supreme in our lives. When government promotes and supports immoral threats to all human life, Christian marriage, human rights, and other injustices, we as Christ’s followers are bound to take a stand against this misuse of funds and authority. St. Paul, in his First Letter to the Thessalonian community, recognizes the struggles the faithful have in following Christ. These struggles have continued to occur in every era. As we seek to make stewardship a way of life in today’s hostile, secular culture, we must, in a spirit of evangelization, make Jesus and His moral teaching the center of our lives. Consider joining your parish’s faith formation program or taking classes at Sacred Heart Major Seminary to strengthen your knowledge of Jesus’ moral Truth.
