The Lord’s Laughter “A joyful heart is a good medicine, but a broken spirit dries up the bones.” Proverbs 17:22

While watching a movie recently, I couldn't hear the dialogue over the chatter of the two women sitting in front of me. Unable to bear it any longer, I tapped one of them on the shoulder. "Excuse me," I said, "I can't hear.” “I should hope not," she replied sharply. “This is a private conversation."

A retired man who volunteers to entertain patients in nursing homes and hospitals went to one local hospital in Brooklyn and took his portable keyboard along. He told some jokes and sang some funny songs at patients' bedsides. When he finished he said, in farewell, "I hope you get better." One elderly gentleman replied, "I hope you get better, too."

Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles

"But who do you say that I am?" What if asked this question today? How would people respond? Some might focus on his role in history, saying, "You are the founder of the Christian religion." Others might describe his work: "You are a teacher, a healer, a spiritual guide." Perhaps there are some who would identify him by his character, suggesting that he is a loving, generous, compassionate, and forgiving role model. But surely some would answer in the same spirit as Peter in today's reading, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." This is a profound statement of faith. To call Jesus "the Christ" is to profess that he is the Messiah, the long- awaited savior of God's people. To call him the Son of God is to profess that he is not only a miracle-working man, he is also divine. Among the disciples being ques- tioned, Peter was the one who responded with this real insight into Jesus' identity. "Flesh and blood has not re- vealed this to you," Jesus replied to Peter, "but my heav- enly Father." In other words, recognizing Jesus as our savior and our God isn't something we figure out on our own. It's a spiritual insight that comes through faith. Jesus did many amazing things while he walked the earth. He gave us a powerful example of love and for- giveness and he offered us teachings that help direct our lives. But we are called to see even more than these his- torical facts; as Christians we are called to recognize him as the Christ. Through faith, we know who Jesus really is: our God and our Savior. Thus, we are called to give him more than our respect and admiration as a remarka- ble man. We are called to give him our full allegiance and to worship him as the one true God.
