Onsite, we utilize many different techniques to educate, including the displays, videos, touch screen kiosks and more. To reach young people, we conduct Confirmation Classes (history), Collegiate Studies & Visitations, Supplemental Club Programs, Youth Conference Related Exhibits, Online & Hands On Activities and Youth Sunday School Lessons for all Presbyterian denominations. In addition to these limited-time exhibits, the PHC seeks to provide accompanying educational materials, such as learning booklets, online downloadable materials and DVD resource disks for adults and young people. There was a long debate during the latter portion of the Middle Ages among clerics about reforms needed to convert more people to Christianity. Early reformers (i.e., challengers to the west- ern Roman Catholic Church) often focused on one goal — translating the Latin Bible or portions of the Bible into the common spoken tongue of the country so the populace could more easily read it. Originally the Bible was written in Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek, with a Latin translation attributed to St. Jerome (c. 347 - 420 A.D., also known as Eusebius Sophronius Hierony- mus before sainthood was conferred) made in the late 4th century. Another copy of the text, without lavish illustrations but including a translation of the Book of Judges instead of Joshua (hence also called the Old English Hexateuch), is found in the Bodleian Library in Oxford University.     CHOOSING A BIBLE TRANSLATION Reading, studying and praying through the Bible are an essential part of the Christian faith. The Bible teaches us about who God is; the purpose of human life; and how we should live in relation to God, to other people and to the created world. But more than just a source of information, beliefs, and practices, when we read the Bible with faith it becomes one of the key places where we encounter God. Indeed, when we pray for God’s Spirit to bring the ancient words alive, we are promised an encounter with God’s living Word – Jesus himself. All of this makes choosing which Bible translation to use an important decision. The two main things that go into this decision is how faithful it is to the original Hebrew and Greek Biblical manuscripts (so it will communicate what the Bible really says), and whether it’s easy to understand and enjoyable to read (so that you’ll actually want to read it). Picking a good translation means balancing the two – some translations focus on being as literal as possible (word-for-word), while others focus on taking the ideas spoken in the ancient languages and putting them into easily understandable modern English (thought-for-thought). Below I’ve listed four translations which are among the most common ones used today. NRSV (New Revised Standard Version) The NRSV is a mainly word- for-word translation of the Bible that is the most commonly used translation in university level Biblical studies. One of its distinctive features are the fact that it was translated by a group of scholars that included Protestant, Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Christians, which makes it largely free of bias towards any one Christian tradition.

Drawing upon extensive manuscript research, it focuses on the reign of Mary I (1553-1558), when the official return to Roman Catholicism was accompanied by the prosecution of Protestants for heresy, and the reign of Elizabeth I (1558-1603), when the state religion again shifted to Protestantism. I argue that the cognitive dissonance created by these seesaw changes of official doctrine necessitated a society in which religious mutability became standard operating procedure. For most early modern men and women it was impossible to navigate between the competing and contradictory dictates of Tudor religion and politics without conforming, dissimulating, or changing important points of conscience and belief.

    Tender Mercies in English Scriptural Idiom and in Nephi’s Record Miranda Wilcox Nephi records divine beings inviting humans to participate in the sacred story of salvation and humans petitioning divine beings for aid in their mortal affliction. The first chapter of Nephi’s story introduces linguistic, textual, and narrative questions about how humans should engage with and produce holy books that memorialize these divine- human relations in heaven and on earth. For Nephi, a central element of these relationships is “tender mercies” (1 Nephi 1:20). What are tender mercies? How do the Lord’s tender mercies make the chosen faithful “mighty, even unto the power of deliverance”? Nephi’s striking phrase has become popular in Latter-day Saint discourse since Elder David A. Bednar preached of the “tender mercies of the Lord” at general conference in April 2005. He defined tender mercies as “very personal and individualized blessings, strength, pro- tection, assurances, guidance, loving-kindnesses, consolation, support, and spiritual gifts which we receive from and because of and through the Lord Jesus Christ.”1 I would like to extend this discussion and reconsider this definition with respect to Nephi’s record by explor- ing the biblical sources and the transmission of this beloved phrase through English scriptural idiom. 1. Drawing upon extensive manuscript research, it focuses on the reign of Mary I (1553-1558), when the official return to Roman Catholicism was accompanied by the prosecution of Protestants for heresy, and the reign of Elizabeth I (1558-1603), when the state religion again shifted to Protestantism. I argue that the cognitive dissonance created by these seesaw changes of official doctrine necessitated a society in which religious mutability became standard operating procedure. For most early modern men and women it was impossible to navigate between the competing and contradictory dictates of Tudor religion and politics without conforming, dissimulating, or changing important points of conscience and belief. Although early modern theologians and polemicists widely declared religious conformists to be shameless apostates, when we examine specific cases in context it becomes apparent that most individuals found ways to positively rationalize and justify their respective actions. This fraught history continued to have long-term effects on England’s religious, political, and intellectual culture.
