George Cooper Project Manager: Janet Cave Seely MetroMovers HEADLINES From Sea to Sea s you’ve no doubt gathered from this month’s cover, this issue turns a spotlight Ato the United States’ neighbor to the north and the IAM member companies and individuals who work there. This year, Canada celebrates its sesquicentennial (150th) anniversary, so we thought it only fitting to profile them on this special occasion. Surely you know where Canada is and how to find it on a map, but chances are you don’t know much about the country, so allow me to share some facts. The name Canada comes from the word kanata, which in the language of the indig- enous Iroquoians means settlement or village. Today, the two main languages spoken in Canada are English and French. Canada is 9,984,670 square kilometers (6,200,480 square miles) and spans six times zones. It is the second largest country in the world behind Russia. It has the world’s longest coastline stretching 202,080 kilometers (125,570 miles), which explains why the national motto is Mari Usque ad Mare, meaning “From sea to sea.” Here are a few more tidbits you might find interesting: • As of June 27, 2017, 36,620,802 people live in Canada, making it the 38th most populated country in the world. • The median age of its citizens is 40.8 years. • Seventy-five percent of Canadians live in close proximity to the U.S. border. • The United States and Canada share the longest land border in the world, totaling TERRY R. HEAD 8,891 kilometers (5,525 miles). IAM President • Even though the United States and Canada are friendly neighbors, it wasn’t always that way. Canada has been invaded by its southern neighbor twice, first in 1775 dur- ing the American Revolution, and again during the War of 1812. • Canada has more than 30,000 lakes and is home to 55,000 species of insects. I’ve personally had the pleasure of camping, canoeing and fishing on many of her lakes, and I’ve probably encountered most of Canada’s insects too! As you can see, Canada is a vast and diverse country, so being a mover there—no easy task—requires fortitude. But as The Portal editor, Joyce Dexter, points out in her feature article (page 9), movers in Canada are resilient and have a “can-do” attitude. Also in this issue, you’ll want to be sure to ponder some of the results from IAM’s recent Member Needs Survey in an article by IAM’s manager of communications and marketing, Will Kohudic (page 49). We thank you for sharing with us your thoughts and impressions on how the Association is delivering value and meeting your needs, as well as what new products and services you want us to consider developing going forward. If you are a history buff, be sure to read the IAM Looking Back section (page 45), which examines the roots of the decision to re-engineer the U.S. Department of Defense Personal Property Program. The re-engineering process that began in the early 1970s is a decades-long work in progress that continues today, so perhaps there are lessons to be learned by both the government and industry from that experience. Last, and certainly not least, don’t miss the Movers Doing Good section (page 53). I am always amazed at all the great things IAM members are doing in their communities and around the world. Perhaps some of these stories will inspire you, your colleagues and employees to find ways to enrich the lives of others who are less fortunate, locally and around the world. 6 July/August 2017 • THE PORTAL IAM: Moving Forward Together By land, air or sea, the DeWitt Companies MAKE IT EASY EASY AFFORDABLE SAFE Our experienced staff and Our rates are competitive, Your shipments are kept personalized service makes moving and our outstanding service safe and secure no matter shipments simple and easy. is unmatched. how far they’re going. SECRETARY OF STATE DIVISION OF BUSINESS SERVICES FOREIGN CHARTERS 1874-1971 RECORD GROUP 281 Processed by: Ted Guillaum Archives Technical Services Tennessee State Library & Archives Date Completed: 5-24-2001 MICROFILM ONLY INTRODUCTION Record Group 281, Secretary of State, Division of Business Services, Foreign Charters, 1874-1971, contains 180 cubic feet of documents filed by corporations from out of state doing business in Tennessee. These forms were filed with the Secretary of State and are arranged numerically, however, there is also an alphabetical index. Under Tennessee statute it is the ministerial duty for The Secretary of State to file corporate documents and to maintain a record of the filings. Every foreign (non- Tennessee) corporation that intends to conduct business in Tennessee must first register their corporation with the Secretary of State. To register the foreign corporation in Tennessee, the corporation would file a copy of its charter. A charter is the legal document that establishes the corporation as a legal entity. The registration includes a principal address for the corporation and a registered agent address for service of process. This record group was microfilmed and the originals disposed of according to the Tennessee State RDA for these records. SCOPE AND CONTENT Record Group 281, Secretary of State, Division of Business Services, Foreign Charters, contains 180 cubic feet of documents spanning the years 1874 through 1971. The record group consists of reports filed by corporations headquarted outside of Tennessee. The Division of Business Services originally maintained these records in numerical order but the numerical index evidently was abandoned at some point.
