Church of Our Lady of Good Counsel - St. Thomas More January 1st, 2017 Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God Today is the celebration of Mary as the Mother of God (in Greek, , literally meaning “God-bearer”). The official church recognition of Mary as Theotokos dates back to the in AD 431. While there exist today many Marian titles, church historians consider Theotokos to be the oldest title attributed to Mary. It took the early church centuries to develop the Mariology that we know today. In fact, outside of the Gospels (and even here, largely restricted to the infancy narratives of Matthew and Luke), most of the New Testament authors do not discuss Mary, focusing rather on her son, Jesus Christ.

The second reading from Paul’s Letter to the Galatians is a good example of this. Galatians 4:4, part of today’s reading, contains the only Pauline reference to the mother of Jesus, noting, “When the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman.” Paul mentions “born of a woman” (Mary) in relation to defining Jesus as the Son of God and the Gentiles’ status as “heir” to the same promises made to Israel. Obviously, without Mary, Jesus would not have been born. Yet Paul’s focus is exclusively Christological.

Today’s reading from Luke’s infancy narrative offers us some glimpses into the person of Mary and her worldview. In fact, Luke provides us with three insights into Mary. First, with the visit of the shepherds and their message to and Mary, we learn that God communicated to Mary through other people in her life. In this case, the shepherds confirmed the message Mary originally received from the at the annunciation (Lk 1:26-38): Mary gave birth to the Messiah, the Son of God. Second, Luke tells us that “Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart.” She was a young woman of deep prayer and contemplation. Mary integrated her experience of the divine with both her heart and her mind. Third, Mary was an observant Jew. She understood herself and new family through Jewish lens. Luke tells us that Jesus received “circumcision” and was “named” on the eighth day—precepts of the Mosaic law. Adapted from Liturgical Publications Inc, Connect! Uniting Word & World, Dr. J. Scholz
