Lesser Feasts and Fasts 2018 Conforming to General Convention 2018 1 Preface Christians have since ancient times honored men and women whose lives represent heroic commitment to Christ and who have borne witness to their faith even at the cost of their lives. Such witnesses, by the grace of God, live in every age. The criteria used in the selection of those to be commemorated in the Episcopal Church are set out below and represent a growing consensus among provinces of the Anglican Communion also engaged in enriching their calendars. What we celebrate in the lives of the saints is the presence of Christ expressing itself in and through particular lives lived in the midst of specific historical circumstances. In the saints we are not dealing primarily with absolutes of perfection but human lives, in all their diversity, open to the motions of the Holy Spirit. Many a holy life, when carefully examined, will reveal flaws or the bias of a particular moment in history or ecclesial perspective. It should encourage us to realize that the saints, like us, are first and foremost redeemed sinners in whom the risen Christ’s words to St. Paul come to fulfillment, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” The “lesser feasts” provide opportunities for optional observance. They are not intended to replace the fundamental celebration of Sunday and major Holy Days. As the Standing Liturgical Commission and the General Convention add or delete names from the calendar, successive editions of this volume will be published, each edition bearing in the title the date of the General Convention to which it is a response. -

366 Tsamakda Chapter 25 The Homilies of John Chrysostom Vasiliki Tsamakda The Author and His Work St John Chrysostom (c.347-407) was the most important Father of the Orthodox Church. Archbishop of Constantinople from 398 to 404, he was officially recog- nized as a Doctor of the Orthodox Church by the Council of Chalcedon in 4511 due to his vast and important theological writings.2 He was the most produc- tive among the Church Fathers, with over 1,500 works written by, or ascribed to him. His name was firmly associated with the Liturgy, but above all he was appreciated for his numerous sermons and as an extraordinary preacher. From the 6th century on he was called Chrysostomos, the “golden mouthed”. The fact that over 7,000 manuscripts including his writings exist, attests to the impor- tance and great distribution of his works, many of which were translated into other languages. The great majority of them date after the Iconoclasm. The homilies of John Chrysostom were read during the Service of the Matins (Orthros) mainly in Byzantine monasteries. They were transmitted in various collections or series from which only a few were selected for illustration. PASTOR’S MEANDERINGS 28 -29 DECEMBER 2019 FEAST OF THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS MARY AND JOSEPH REFLECTION FOR THE FEAST The Feast of the Holy Family is experienced by many as slightly intimidating. When the whole Church contemplates the domestic life of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, the shortcomings of our own family life are highlighted. Especially with the rise of martial breakdown and the decline in religious practice, the Holy Family can appear very distant indeed from our – perhaps painfully ‘unholy’ – families. Just look at today’s First Reading and compare your own family life, and the families you know. Are fathers honored by their children? Do mothers have their authority respected? Are parents gladdened and comforted by their children? Is the presence of the elderly warmly welcomed? And how about the virtues listed in the second reading, virtues which doubtless characterized the home of Jesus, Mary and Joseph: can we really say that our families are characterized by patience, forgiveness, humility, gentleness, obedience, mutual submission? If we treat this feast only as an examination of conscience, we might end up simply feeling inadequate. But a proper understanding of our baptism shows that this feast contains a consolation and a promise that lifts us out of our despair. Think about it: we have each been baptized into Christ. We are living members of Christ’s body. By our baptism we have been “called into one body”, not a generic body politic, but precisely the body of Christ. This has immense consequences: it means that, to the extent that we are joined to Christ by faith and love and the sacraments everything He did and suffered counts, mystically, as our very own. -

ABSTRACT The Apostolic Tradition in the Ecclesiastical Histories of Socrates, Sozomen, and Theodoret Scott A. Rushing, Ph.D. Mentor: Daniel H. Williams, Ph.D. This dissertation analyzes the transposition of the apostolic tradition in the fifth-century ecclesiastical histories of Socrates, Sozomen, and Theodoret. In the early patristic era, the apostolic tradition was defined as the transmission of the apostles’ teachings through the forms of Scripture, the rule of faith, and episcopal succession. Early Christians, e.g., Irenaeus, Tertullian, and Origen, believed that these channels preserved the original apostolic doctrines, and that the Church had faithfully handed them to successive generations. The Greek historians located the quintessence of the apostolic tradition through these traditional channels. However, the content of the tradition became transposed as a result of three historical movements during the fourth century: (1) Constantine inaugurated an era of Christian emperors, (2) the Council of Nicaea promulgated a creed in 325 A.D., and (3) monasticism emerged as a counter-cultural movement. Due to the confluence of these sweeping historical developments, the historians assumed the Nicene creed, the monastics, and Christian emperors into their taxonomy of the apostolic tradition. For reasons that crystallize long after Nicaea, the historians concluded that pro-Nicene theology epitomized the apostolic message. They accepted the introduction of new vocabulary, e.g. homoousios, as the standard of orthodoxy. In addition, the historians commended the pro- Nicene monastics and emperors as orthodox exemplars responsible for defending the apostolic tradition against the attacks of heretical enemies. The second chapter of this dissertation surveys the development of the apostolic tradition. -

Morgan, B.S., M.A. Marquette University, 2013 In this dissertation I argue that Cyril of Alexandria’s interpretation of “spiritual circumcision” provides invaluable insight into his complex doctrine of salvation. Spiritual Circumcision – or Circumcision by the Spirit -- is a recurring theme throughout his extensive body of exegetical literature, which was written before the Nestorian controversy (428). When Cyril considers the meaning and scope of circumcision, he recognizes it as a type that can describe a range of salvific effects. For him, circumcision functions as a unifying concept that ties together various aspects of salvation such as purification, sanctification, participation, and freedom. Soteriology, however, can only be understood in relation to other doctrines. Thus, Cyril’s discussions of circumcision often include correlative areas of theology such as hamartiology and Trinitarian thought. In this way, Cyril’s discussions on circumcision convey what we are saved from, as well as the Trinitarian agency of our salvation. -

O. INTRODUCTION In today’s conditions of building a netting of Basilian monasteries, it becomes necessary to turn to the historical experience of managing monastic communities. After all, the system of administrative management of the Christian ascetic centers has undergone a certain evolution from the complete autonomy (each monastery had its own charter and was independent of each other) to the gradual legal submission to the local bishops first, and subsequently there was a re-subordination to the newly formed authorities of the Proto-Hegumen and the Proto-Archimandrite. The introduction of these governing institutions in the Union Church allowed the creation of an autonomous system of administrative control of the Basilian monasticism, which was subjected neither to the local rulers nor to the Metropolitan of Kiev, and instead it was subjected to papal law. The answer to this right applies to all provinces of the Basilian Order subordinated to the Pope. The considered management system was borrowed from the administrative organization of the Roman Catholic monasteries for a more effective manner of union monastic communities. Accordingly, in our time, when there is a reform of the system of governance, the conditional development of church institutions and the development of society is reflected in the regular updating of the Constitutions of the Order of St. Basil the Great (hereinafter OSBM), it becomes necessary to examine the historical and legal aspects of the establishment of governance institutions that continue to operate in the modern Greek-Catholic Church, which is considered to be the successor to the Union Church. -

All of the Churches recall her memory under this title in their daily Eucharistic prayers, and especially in the annual celebration of Christmas. The Virgin Mary was already venerated as Mother of God when, in 431, the Council of Ephesus acclaimed her Theotokos (God-bearer). As the Mother of God, the Virgin Mary has a unique position among the saints, indeed, among all creatures. She is exalted, yet still one of us. Redeemed by reason of the merits of her Son and united to Him by a close and indissoluble tie, she is endowed with the high office and dignity of being the Mother of the Son of God, by which account she is also the beloved daughter of the Father and the temple of the Holy Spirit. Because of this gift of sublime grace she far surpasses all creatures, both in heaven and on earth. At the same time, however, because she belongs to the offspring of Adam she is one with all those who are to be saved.
