The Lion’s Tale

December 17, 2010 Leo Junior/Senior High School Volume LIII Issue Afghan refugee resides in Leo By Jenna McAbee Opinion editor From the beginning, 16-year-old Sana Seerat’s life was not easy. Seerat was an Afghan refugee living in after her family fled the Taliban takeover of their country. When she was nine months old, Seerat was diagnosed with a disease called polio that could possibly take her life away one day. From that point of her life, things only went downhill. Her family was very poor and they didn’t even have enough money to pay for all of the treatments she needed to take care of her polio. According to Seerat, she just wanted to be able to live a normal life like any other girl. Seerat wanted to have friends; instead, she had children chasing her down and calling her names. After her family returned to , Seerat’s mother and father had to support a family of seven. All of the extra money the Seerat’s family received went towards Sana’s treatments, and her family could not even afford to pay for food. “My younger brother tried to earn money by Sana Seerat poses with the Lyon family in July. By Abbie Trosper A&E editor

In June of 2012, several chaperoned students of Leo Jr./Sr. High School will be going on an excursion to Costa Rica to partake in a unique learning experience. Ben Shappell (teacher at Leo), his wife Carrie Shappell, and Mark Mettert (teacher at New Haven High School) will be the adult supervisors of this trip, leading the students through all the wonders that Costa Rica has to offer. Shappell said that there are nine students signed up and planning to go, but he is eager that more will take advantage of this educational opportunity. Through the end of the year, the price of the excursion is $1,600, and through March 31 the price of $1,800. The cost includes all flights, food, lodging, and activities. Sophomores Aubrey Dean-Cross and Jennifer Emery both believe that the value of their experience will be worth the expense. “The trip isn’t until 2012 though, so there’s time to save money,” said Dean-Cross. “I do think the trip will be worth the price because if I try to go another time, I probably won’t find an opportunity cheaper than this one.” Sophomore Alli Miller poses next to the Costa Rica poster.
