The seniors also enjoyed browsing through the art foyer to admire student work. Bingo, as always, was a favorite for the day. Lunch was served in the gym by members of the student council. The award recognizes the qualities of Character, Courage and Commitment in New York’s students and is sponsored by the N.Y.S. Attorney General’s Office. Elementary School Principal, Rachel Curtin introduced special guest speaker, Assistant Attorney General Darren Longo who said, “Their strength of FFA Elects Officers for 2014 - 2015 character has helped them to achieve their goals and will guide them in making the right decisions in the future. It gives me great pleasure to introduce the students who have received this special recognition for their talents or abilities. This year the award was presented to two students in the Elementary School. I would like to present the Triple ‘C’ Award to Hailey Walker and Alex Gibson.” Quoting from Hailey’s nomination form, her teacher Mrs. Galbreth said, “Hailey possesses exemplary character because she demonstrates tolerance and acceptance of other people and cultures in our classroom and school. She understands that people may have different interests, home lives, or traditions than she has and she is interested in learning about others, accepting their differences and celebrating them! She is positive, kind and respectful. Courage is a quality that Hailey displays by quietly doing the right thing in compromising situations. Even when she is presented with a difficult situation, she chooses the high road, makes positive choices and tells the truth. Hailey does not work for recognition. She lives the rules of the Eagle Way each day by valuing everyone in every way in a very humble, selfless and sincere manner.” Alex Gibson was nominated by Miss Komendat. She said, “Alex’s personality rises above the rest. He is a friend to everyone he comes in contact with. He is an excellent example to others because of his work ethic, dedication to school work and his positive attitude. The Purple Eagles’ competitive program utilizes the “open class”, or “5-minute rule.” AHS Marching Band Travels To Philadelphia In a nutshell, this competition format allows for any formation and direction changes within the judging area, the only stipulation being a five-minute time limit between the first note of music or movement and the last. “It’s almost like a field show on the street, except you have the added element of making an entrance 150 feet down-street, developing the show from left to right, progressing toward a logical exit from the 300’ judging area” Mr. Thaine explained. “It’s not intended to be a ‘Park & Play,’ where bands simply march into the area, stop and play a song, then march away. There’s much more to it than that. Judges look for a development of the whole show, from beginning to end, with drill that compliments the musical program.” Bands are judged on music performance, visual design and execution, and general effect. In addition to music and intricate drill moves, the Purple Eagles 2014 show utilized a 10-foot tall heart prop, and a mass release of red, eco-friendly balloons. Albion’s program was entitled “Heartbeats,” and featured loved-themed music. It opened with Queen’s “Can Anybody Find Me Somebody to Love?” before transitioning into “You Give Love a Bad Name” by Bon Jovi. The ballad was Phil Collins’ “You’ll Be in My Heart” from the Walt Disney motion picture “Tarzan,” and this season’s closer was “I Can’t Help Falling in Love with You” by Elvis Presley.
