INSIDE Eisenhower Presidential Museum Renovations Underway Meredith’s Memo After weeks of carefully removing artifacts from exhibit cases and completely emptying the classroom cabinets, construction has officially commenced at the Eisenhower Special Recognition Presidential Museum. This renovation project is a grassroots effort that is being funded through donations to the Eisenhower Foundation’s Dwight D. Eisenhower: A Legacy of Celebrating our Heroes Leadership Capital Campaign. As U.S. Senator Jerry Moran remarked in a recent letter of support, “The Foundation’s Our Partners vision, as laid out in its ‘A Legacy of Leadership’ Campaign, will ensure the Museum’s vitality well into the 21st century.” With a fundraising goal of $11.75 million, the Did You Know? Campaign is near completion and the Eisenhower Foundation is grateful to the individuals, foundations, and corporations that have made this project a reality. IKEducation In May, the Dane G. Hansen Foundation joined the President’s Club — an exclusive History for the Future list of lead donors, that includes the Hall Family Foundation, the William T. Kemper Foundation, and the Sunderland Foundation — with a second major grant to the Upcoming Events Campaign. In addition, gifts made by the DeBruce Foundation and the Walter S. and Evan C. Jones Testamentary Trust, Bank of America, N.A., Trustee, both in the First Spotlight Event Family Club, have enabled the project to stay on the current timeline that allows the Museum to reopen in time for the 75th Anniversary of D-Day — June 6, 2019. -
Q33384 William Blake and Speculative Fiction Assignment 2
Commentary on the Adaptation of Blake’s America: A Prophecy into a Series of Murals Inspired by Northern Irish Political Art and Popular Art Within the Graphic Novels of Alan Moore and Bryan Talbot. Joel Power 1 Overview Blake’s America: A Prophecy is a response to great social and political upheaval present at the end of the eighteenth century, and what Bindman calls a ‘revolutionary energy’2 in America and France. My mural adaptations focus on plates 8-10, a dialogue between this ‘revolutionary energy’, personified by 1 My images as they would appear in situ. 2 David Bindman, in William Blake, America a Prophecy, in The Complete Illuminated Books, ed. by David Bindman (London: Thames and Hudson, 2001), p. 153. INNERVATE Leading student work in English studies, Volume 8 (2015-2016), pp. 233-241 Joel Power 234 Orc, and Urizen in the guise of Albion’s Angel, before the poem turns into Blake’s ‘mythical version’3 of the American War of Independence. The genre of murals, as with those in Northern Ireland, create narratives ‘rich in evocative imagery’ presenting ‘aspirations, hopes, fears and terror’,4 telling of stories and legends between the past, present and future. The rebellious nature of the medium makes it an apt vehicle through which to adapt Blake’s work. Enriched with graphic imagery and intertextuality from Moore’s Promethea, Watchmen, V for Vendetta, Swamp Thing and Talbot’s The Adventures of Luther Arkwright, the three murals form part of a larger scale urban project which would reveal itself on city walls over a period of time, creating drama and intrigue. -
Women in Comics II'
Contents Welcome to Comics Forum 2 Programme 3 Abstracts 5 Profiles 13 Contributor Comics 19 Message from the Chair of 'Women in Comics II' Last year the first 'Women in Comics' Conference was held at The New Hall Collection, Murray Edwards College, University of Cambridge. It was a great success and as I was told 'everyone loves a sequel', I am delighted to be chairing 'Women in Comics II', here in Leeds Art Gallery on 18th November 2010. This 'Women in Comics II' conference, like its predecessor, celebrates the growing interest in women in comics, in women reading comics, in women writing about comics, in women making comics. Our aim at these conferences is to be supportive of creative and academic endeavours in all these fields. The atmosphere we engender is one of mutual interest and encouragement, to benefit the continued growth in this community. There is wonderful array of speakers lined up for today's conference. I am particularly delighted by the range of nationalities present on the panels, and the opportunity to bring together different generations of women creators. Thanks go to those who have travelled extensively to be here, including Maureen Burdock from New Mexico, and The Danish Penneveninder (Penfriends), Monica Hee Eun Jensen, Rikke Hollaender, Karen Hansen and Ina Kjoelby Korneliussen. It is also a great honour to welcome Suzy Varty to 'Women in Comics II'. Her publication 'Heroine', was the first all women's comic to be published in the UK in 1977, and is the front cover of our programme. I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone on the 'Women in Comics' Committee, including Catriona MacLeod and Rikke Platz Cortsen, for expertly managing the call for papers, Nicola Streeten for her technical skills, Dr Laurence Grove for his advice and support, Dr Mel Gibson for her support and suggestions, and our volunteers Harriet Kennedy and Emily Rabone. -
