Trained as a nurse in London. Was admitted to the Sunshine Scheme and travelled out to Rhodesia in 1974. Soon afterwards, left nursing to join the Rhodesian Army, undertaking a mixture of administrative work, training and nursing. Remained in the Army until beyond independence. Shortly afterwards, transferred to the British Army. This is Annie Berry interviewing Alison Miller, now Alison Ruffell, on Monday the 3rd of August 2009 in London. Thank you very much for coming along today. Perhaps you could begin by explaining how you came to be in Rhodesia initially? I did nurse training in London and wanted to have a year out of the country to get some experience before I went back to my hospital, to work there again. There was the Sunshine Scheme in those days where they paid for nurses to go out to Rhodesia for a year. They would pay their fare both ways and give them a job for a year, so I signed up to the Sunshine Scheme and went out as a nurse. Was this scheme always for Rhodesia? Yes, I don’t know if there were other countries but I knew a Rhodesian family and they were over in the UK and we were just sort of generally chatting about what I was going to do and they mentioned the possibility and showed me where to go.

Last month’s tongue in cheek letter that took a swipe at the Brits in Afghanistan stated that only one Rhodesian was killed during Op Dingo (the attack on Chimoio). We were reminded that Flight Lieutenant Phil Haigh was killed when he crash landed near Inyanga after his Vampire had been hit by ground fire in that Operation. We regret the omission. As I have told you before, I get a lot of letters of appreciation. It must be noted that none of my input to this Association would be possible if I did not have the support of my wife Diana through all aspects of my involvement including proof reading this publication. In addition I have a workmate, Colin Logie, to work on plans with everyday as well as our Curator, Tony Fraser who also is never far from the scene.

    Footprints DAVID JOSEPH WEBSTER Born: 1945 – Died: 1 May 1989 When my son was assassinated on the 15 April 1989, I had several calls from comrades and friends from all over the world, but I waited for that voice from Johannesburg who with his partner had spent a few days in Harare having come up to listen to Black musicians who were billed to play out of town. We were there together and I remember him with his partner squatting and dancing on his haunches and his laughing face etched in my memory. Why did he not call? Then on the 1 May, 1989, May Day I heard he was shot and called his partner who said, ‘David was going to call you today as he could not bear the pain of talking to you earlier.’ ***** Janet Smith in the Independent on Saturday 13/6/2009, and Margaret Von Klemperer in The Witness on Wednesday 24/6/2009, reviewing Jacques Pauw’s latest book ‘Little Ice Cream Boy’ brought David Webster to my mind. While reading Janet’s account, Richard Whamba was playing David’s music that he loved. I was in tears. David and partner Maggie Friedman visited me in exile in Harare. They had come to listen to a band that was due to play in the outskirts of Harare. Their visit was the first time I had met David. I had sent to him international activists to visit him in Johannesburg. They had returned with glowing reports of what David and Maggie were doing. One group was in time for the annual Christmas party with detainee’s children.

In this dissertation, articulations of identity within the context of Searle’s work are examined in their social-historical relationships. Searle, in her art, both uses her body to illustrate constructions of identity and reclaims her body (and by extension, other similar bodies). These performances of articulated identity considered through the rubric of reprendre will elucidate the construction of Coloured identity in the South African body politic. These performances will also allow a consideration of counter-spaces for discussing political agency. Since the collapse of apartheid in South Africa in 1994 the citizens of the new, non-racial state have had to contend with lasting effects of the violence and racism that founded much of South African history.

In the bad old days of uncontrolled whaling in Antarctica, the hardened whalers had a saying “Beyond 40 degrees South there is no law. Beyond 50 degrees South there is no God”. Today some little ships venture into the icy waters far beyond these limits, one of them being a former Russian research vessel, the Grigoriy Mikheev. Laying claim to Antarctica In the afternoon of the 24th we reached Vernadsky Island where we visited the Ukranian research station with its most hospitable staff. After a tour of the station, I handed them the Rhodesian flag which is now proudly displayed in their bar. At 65°15’ South/64°16’ West this is possibly the furthest South a Rhodesian flag has ever been. It bears the Flame Lily Foundation e-mail address, and perhaps some other wandering Rhodie will see it one day and send a message. Among other mementoes in the bar is a fine collection of bras, kindly donated by passing lady visitors amidst much cheering. One of the bras now has a Zimbabwe $500 note tucked into it! The Grogoriy Mikheev Weighing only 2000 tons, and with 46 passengers on board, she left the Argentinian port of Ushaia, near Cape Horn, on 19 December 2005 and headed down the Beagle Channel and into the Drake Passage. This is renowned as one of the world’s roughest stretches of ocean, and it lived up to its reputation with a Force 8 Gale and huge seas which had many of the passengers and even some of the crew seasick.

    1953-1978 SPECIAL ISSUE TO MARK THE SIL VER JUBILEE ,_,,, . .,.....__ - OF THE SOCIETY MAY 1978 THOMAS MEIKLE, 1862-1939 The founder of the Meikle Organisation sailed from Scotland with his parents in 1869. The family settled in Natal where Thomas and his brothers John and Stewart gained their first farming ex­ perience. In 1892 the three brothers set off for Rhodesia with eight ox- wagons. Three months later they had completed the 700 mile trek to Fort Victoria. Here they opened a store made of whisky cases and roofed over with the tarpaulins that had covered their wagons. Progress was at first slow, nevertheless, branches were opened in Salisbury in 1893, Bulawayo and Gwelo in 1894, and in Umtali in 1897. From these small beginnings a vast network of stores, hotels, farms, mines and auxilliary undertakings was built up. These ventures culminated in the formation of the Thomas Meikle Trust and Investment Company in 1933. The success of these many enterprises was mainly due to Thomas Meikle's foresight and his business acumen, coupled with his ability to judge character and gather around him a loyal and efficient staff.
