With this realization, she made her way in the world. After studying com- munications, she worked as a journalist, banner designer, research assistant, and filmmaker. For the past twenty years she has been a children’s book author. She has written three fairy tales and twelve novels published by La Courte Échelle editions. Marie loves being around children and regularly attends writers’ Marie Décary workshops in primary and secondary schools and public libraries. Together with Ana Sokolović, she has also written a musical tale for the SMCQ youth sector, which in 2001 won a Prix Opus from the Conseil québécois de la musique. The Illustrator Élisabeth Eudes-Pascal has always enjoyed drawing. She studied painting and illustration in Montreal. During the course of her career, she has illustrated close to thirty children’s novels and albums, while also working on schoolbooks and international magazines. Élisabeth has lived in many countries; France, India, and Honduras, where she worked with intellectually-challenged persons. “I like helping people find their creativity because everybody has it inside them and creating is liberating: we need only to read Denis Gougeon’s comic book to Élisabeth Eudes-Pascal see this! Drawing and painting require me to be constantly evolving, and it is this that I find very stimulating.” In her drawings, she mostly uses watercolor, a quill and India ink. She sometimes adds gouache or even glues bits of paper onto them. Having had the chance to travel a lot, she sketches in a notebook, which better conveys what she sees and feels than photographs. Her talent has twice resulted in her becoming a Elisabeth Greenshield Foundation grant recipient and a finalist for the 2011 Governor General Awards.

Sophie Stévance* Université Laval, Québec Faculty of Music CONTEMPORARY MUSIC AT THE FRINGE: THE EXAMPLE OF “MUSIQUE ACTUELLE” IN CANADA Abstract: The International Week of Today’s Music (SIMA), organised in 1961 by Pierre Mercure within the framework of the Montreal Festivals, is a master event: beside the works of Serge Garant, Karlheinz Stockhausen or Iannis Xenakis, this event permitted to the experimental music of today to be heard as provocative and heterogeneous as it may be, in particular with Cage Atlas Eclipticalis’ creation or Richard Maxfield’s Piano Concert for David Tudor. Mercure challenged an American experimental aesthetic’s different from Europeans experimentations. The hypothesis of this paper is that what has been called “musique actuelle” since 1979 in Quebec, refers to Mercure’s artistic perspectives. How affiliated is musique actuelle to the SIMA? This paper seeks to answer this question by looking at the different uses of the expression of musique actuelle so as to bring to light the historical reasons, roots and fundaments of the expression since its first uses. The ac- tualist movement has in common with Mercure’s project more than a name: it carries and maybe focuses for the Mercure’s aesthetic and social policy by refusing certain zone sys- tem within cultural poles with creation methods such as free and collective improvisation. But beyond this project, it’s definitely of Mercure event’s tradition that actualists arose and built their identity field. * Author contact information: [email protected] 51 New Sound 38, II/2011 Keywords: Musique actuelle, actualism, Pierre Mercure, Productions SuperMusique, mu- sical identity, The International Week of Today’s Music Апстракт: Међународна недеља савремене музике (SIMA), коју је, у оквиру Монт- реалских фестивала, 1961.

CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, NORTHRIDGE CANADIAN MUSIC SINCE 1940: A QUESTION OF NATIONALISM A Thesis submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music by Ronald Frederick Erin August, 1983 J:lhe Thesis of Ronald Frederick Erin is approved: California StD. te Universi tJr, Northridge ii PREFACE This thesis represents a survey of Canadian music since 1940 within the conceptual framework of 'nationalism'. By this selec- tive approach, it does not represent a conclusive view of Canadian music nor does this paper wish to ascribe national priorities more importance than is due. However, Canada has a unique relationship to the question of nationalism. All the arts, including music, have shared in the convolutions of national identity. The rela- tionship between music and nationalism takes on great significance in a country that has claimed cultural independence only in the last 40 years. Therefore, witnessed by Canadian critical res- ponse, the question of national identity in music has become an important factor. \ In utilizing a national focus, I have attempted to give a progressive, accumulative direction to the six chapters covered in this discussion. At the same time, I have attempted to make each chapter self-contained, in order to increase the paper's effective- ness as a reference tool. If the reader wishes to refer back to information on the CBC's CRI-SM record label or the Canadian League of Composers, this informati6n will be found in Chapter IV. Simi- larly, work employing Indian texts will be found in Chapter V. Therefore, a certain amount of redundancy is unavoidable when interconnecting various components.
