Is it a school with a parish, or is it a parish with a school? It is a good question, because our parish communities have a mandate from the to preach the good news. Moreover, that is exactly what a good Catholic school does. It is another one of the ministries of a parish: to educate well-rounded individuals in Gospel values, preparing those young individuals to take their eventual place in the larger secular community. All the educational efforts of the parish school are focused on the life of faith. That faith is formed in knowledge of the teachings of the Church and of the Gospel, and those qualities are demonstrated through a life of service to the community.

A Catholic school is a community of faith, knowledge, and service, as a ministry of the parish community; and Catholic Schools Week provides a wonderful opportunity for us to reflect on whether we have "a school with a parish, or a parish with a school," and make sure our parish school is living its mandate from the Church.

Did you hear what I said? You didn’t respond to my text message, did you read and understand my concern? In our age of incredible technology, we can communicate in various ways, yet our ability to receive and digest the message effectively is still a big challenge. Part of our culture is overwhelmed with the multitude of messages; some are addicted to wanting more information or desiring to respond immediately to the cellphone sound. This experience may impact our opportunities to hear ’s voice and know the real sound of God communicating his truth, wisdom and love to all of us. On this Third Sunday of Ordinary Time , we return to Luke’s gospel account, which will carry us through our liturgical cycle this year. The first reading from the book of Nehemiah tells how he as governor of Israel attempts to assist the people who return from the Babylonian exile. Their cities had been destroyed as well as their places of worship, and he took serious efforts in rebuilding what he thought was most important—their faith in God. Hence, the passage describes an assembly called by Nehemiah and the people gather to hear the -scribe read and interpret God’s word to them. There is a possibility that the message was from one of the first five books (the ), and we get a sense how the people responded with reverence and joy for we read: “Ezra the scribe stood on a wooden platform that had been made for the occasion. He opened the scroll so that all the people might see it—for he was standing higher up than any of the people—and, as he opened it, all the people rose. Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God, and all the people, their hands raised high, answered, ‘Amen, amen!’” There was a brief commentary and the people were instructed and dismissed with encouragement from Nehemiah and Ezra: “Today is holy to the LORD your God. Do not be sad, and do not weep.” The gospel describes doing a similar practice as he begins his public ministry in Nazareth, for he reads from the scroll and declares the passage as “fulfilled in your hearing,” and identifies himself with the servant in ’ s writings. However, with Jesus there was not as much enthusiasm for there were challenges for believers to incorporate God’s word into daily living. For all of us, the truth remains. G.K. Chesterton, the convert and well-known writer articulated an interesting observation by penning, “ has not been tried and found wanting; it has been found difficult and not tried.” Jesus always invites us into mission with him and on the path toward holiness, love and service. Did you hear that effort, dedication commitment are mandatory?

As we celebrate Catholic S chool’s W eek, let us rejoice in our call to grow as disciples; be grateful to all our teachers and benefactors; and encourage one another to reveal ’s light and hope in our world! Fr. Mar k
